Ella Carey
Author Ella Carey was born in Adelaide, Australia. She is a Francophile that can practically claim Paris as her second home. She just loves the way that the French appear to live: the beauty of everything they produce or do, and the three hour lunches in the south. Not to mention all of the history of the country.
She has been learning French since age five and has degrees in music, majoring in classical piano, and in the arts, majoring in nineteenth century literature and modern European history, having attended the University of Adelaide.
Writing’s always been her true passion however she has worked in other various guises. Ella, as an emerging author, has had her work published in The Review of Australian Fiction.
Ella has traveled to France more than a dozen times and drew on these many experiences while she wrote “Paris Time Capsule”. She knew right away that the fascinating true story of the abandoned apartment was a perfect fit for her, with its blend of history, mystery, and its impossible and decaying romance. Not to mention that it was in Paris.
She released her debut novel, called “Paris Time Capsule”, independently in the year 2014, and it rose up to number ten on Amazon in the US.
While not writing, she loves to play the piano, paint, travel, walk along the beach, read, play the piano, and go to the theater.
To do research for “A New York Secret”, which is set in an exquisite Uptown restaurant, she traveled to New York. This involved going incognito on foodie tours, exploring the atmospheric streets in Greenwich Village, and visiting some of New York’s most famous restaurants.
The entire experience lead to Ella developing a serious addiction to cannoli, a love for The Village, a passion for The Strand Bookstore, and inspiration for three novels that are each set in New York.
“The House by the Lake” and “From a Paris Balcony” were both nominated for Australian Romance Reader Awards for best historical fiction, and, along with “Paris Time Capsule”, have all been translated into over twelve languages. Other novels have been adapted into film, and have been shortlisted for ARRA awards.
“Paris Time Capsule” is the first novel in the “Paris Time Capsule” series and was released in the year 2014. Cat Jordan, a photographer based in New York, is ready to start a new life with her successful, button-down boyfriend. However when she is informed that she has inherited the estate of some complete stranger, a woman named Isabelle de Florian, her life gets turned on end.
Cat gets to Paris only to find that she now owns a perfectly preserved Belle Epoque apartment in the ninth arrondissement, and the Frenchwoman’s family didn’t know anything about this secret estate. Amid each of these odd developments, Cat’s left with some burning questions. Like who was Isabelle? And why would she leave this inheritance to Cat instead of her own family?
While Cat travels around France trying to find answers, she feels her grip on New York life beginning to slip away from her. With some long buried secrets being uncovered and her attraction to Isabelle’s grandson getting too intense to ignore, she is going to have to choose what to let go of, and what she will claim as her own.
From the moment that Ella takes you inside of the apartment, readers are sure to become hopelessly trapped. She describes in such detail of its contents with vivid clarity that you’re able to picture all of it. Its remarkable characters, the mysteries that are unraveled, the romance, all of it is blended to perfection in Ella’s hands.
“The House by the Lake” is the second novel in the “Paris Time Capsule” series and was released in the year 2016. Anna is more than happy with her well-ordered life in San Francisco. However her world gets turned upside down when Max, her beloved grandfather, reveals one startling secret: Anna is really part of an aristocratic family that lost everything they had during World War II. What is more, Max was forced to leave behind one precious item more than seventy years ago in their old Prussian estate. It is now his wish that Anna go and retrieve it.
Anna burns with some questions while heading off for Germany: What memento would be that important to her grandpa? And why would he keep their history a secret from her? While searching for answers, she finds herself being drawn to Wil, a man that might just hold the key to unlock this mystery. Together, they both find her family’s secrets are connected with one abandoned apartment in Paris. And that these secrets go much deeper than she ever thought.
Alternating between the present and 1930s Europe, this novel illuminates a family’s destiny that is caught in all the turbulence of history.
“From a Paris Balcony” is the third novel in the “Paris Time Capsule” series and was released in the year 2016. Sarah West, a Boston art curator, is heartbroken and alone grieves the recent deaths of both of her parents and the end of her marriage. Since she is ultra sensible by nature, she is determined to just stay the course in order to get her life back on track.
However fate has got something else planned for her. As she cleans out her dad’s closet, she discovers a letter from the famous Parisian courteasn Marthe de Florian which is dated 1895. The subject is Sarah’s great-great-aunt Louisa’s death. Legend has it that Louisa committed suicide. However this letter implies that there is more to this story.
Sarah, determined to figure out the truth and against her own nature, flies off to Paris on an impulse. Here, she is drawn into the world of brilliant artist and her flatmate Laurent Chartier. While she dives deep into the glittering Belle Epoque to unravel this mystery, she finds that her aunt’s tale may offer her exactly what she needs to open up to love once more.
Following Sarah during the present day and Louisa during the 1890s, this moving novel spans over a century to tell two remarkable women’s stories.
