Ron was born on January 13, 1933 in Berkeley, California. He also wrote under the pen names of Frank S. Shawn, Kenneth Robeson, Con Steffanson, Chad Calhoun, Ian R. Jamieson, R.T. Edwards, Josephine Kains, Zeke Masters, Howard Lee, Jillian Kearny, and Joseph Silva. He writes books in a variety of genres, from non fiction to fiction in the fantasy genre as well as mystery, thriller, horror, and science fiction.
He has written as an author for decades and has had a prolific career. Under his name and pen names, Ron has published close to 200 books. He is considered to be one of the top authorities in the country when it comes to comic strips and comic books and wrote a book that came out in 2000 about the topic titled Comic Book Culture.
Ron is known not only for being a novelist but a cultural historian as well, mainly around pop culture. He has written about pulp fiction, which includes his 1972 publication Cheap Thrills, a history of pulp magazines. He has some experience in this field, having written for pulp magazines ever since 1952. This is when his sci-fi letters to the editor parody was published in the Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. The parody was first published in Pelican, a publication put out by the University of California at Berkeley.
Ron worked in advertising as well as marketing for a while, and his time spent there would prove to be an influence on much of his later work. He would write a newspaper parody called Chex Press and compose the text in the early sixties, the parody being made available on the cereal boxes of Ralston Purina that included different varieties of Chex. He also would have pieces published in different magazines such as P.S. Goulart also held a book review column that was published in Venture Science Fiction Magazine.
Since then Goulart has continued to write and create tons of short stories and novels as well as for television. Some common themes that he uses are technology that has gone somehow wrong, heroes that have super powers, and just general humor as well as stories about robots or even people from Hollywood like Groucho Marx.
Goulart wrote two television episodes for the eighties television series Thundercats in 1985. He also wrote the story for an episode of Tales from the Darkside. He would pen an episode for the television series Monsters in 1991 and was not credited but was the creator and writer of the stories that became adaptations of TekWars, a television movie and series that both came out in 1994. He also wrote the episode “Into the Shop” in 1998 for the television show “Welcome to Paradox”.
Goulart penned several books in the seventies that were based on The Phantom by Lee Falk for Avon Books. To do so, he used his pen name Frank Shawn, which is based on the names of his wife and son. He wrote comic stories and short stories for Moonstone Books about The Phantom starting in 2003. He also published novelizations of t.v. shows such as “Laverne & Shirley” and even used female pen names to write romance novels.
He also was known as the ghost writer for the TekWar series, which were credited to William Shatner. The books were popular, but Shatner received the main title and was acknowledged as having written the book outlines. Goulart has served as a ghost writer for books numerous times, writing novels featuring Flash Gordon, the Phantom, and the Avenger. He also wrote the comic science fiction novel Hail Hibbler in 1980, which kicked off the Odd Jobs, Inc. series.
His novel in 1970, After Things Fell Apart, won an Edgar Award and was the only science fiction novel to have done so. He won an Inkpot Award in 1989. Ron would write Marvel Comics scripts in the seventies, adapting sci-fi stories, and worked with Gil Kane on a newspaper strip called Star Hawks. He has also written other comics, such as a six-part series featuring Groucho Marx. Adam and Eve on a Raft, his mystery short story collection, came out in 2001. He also wrote the Comic Book Encyclopedia, which was published in 2004.
He is married to Frances Sheridan Goulart, his wife. She also writes. They have two children together, sons Sean-Lucien and his brother Steffan Eamon. The family lives together in Ridgefield, Connecticut.
Ron Goulart is the creator and writer of the Jack Conger series. The series began with the debut novel’s publication in 1973. It is titled A Talent for the Invisible. The second installment was published in 1977 and is titled The Panchronicon Plot. The third novel in the series was published two years later and is titled Hello, Lemuria, Hello.
A Talent for the Invisible is the first novel in the Jack Conger series by Ron Goulart. Meet main character Jack Conger for the first time in this futuristic debut.
Even if your vision were perfect, you still wouldn’t be able to witness Jack Conger while working and doing what he does best. He is an operative, serving as part of the Wild Talents Division for the esteemed United States Remedial Functions Agency. The thing that he does best is to become invisible.
Now the RFA has assigned him to go where no one else can. Then there’s the Sandman, a scientist that is also invisible. You’ve heard of the mythical Sandman that helped people go to sleep. Well, this one wakes people up, and those that paid to have them assassinated want it fixed. Now the Invisible Man has been sent to track down the Unseen Resurrectionist. Can he be gotten? Read this book to find out!
The Panchronicon Plot is the second book in Goulart’s Jack Conger series. What would you do if you wanted to get rid of enemies standing in your way politically? If you had a time machine, would you strand them in the past on a one-way ticket?
Perhaps it’s not strictly homicide, but it could mess up the timeline a bit. Only the president knew about the existence of a time machine, and now he’s suspected of using it to send enemies back in time. Is Conger just crazy enough to go back in time too? Catch all of the adventure by picking up this zany sequel!
