Richard Osman
Richard Osman was born in Billericay, Essex, England on November 28, 1970 and is a writer, comedian, producer, and television presenter. He is best known for creating the BBC quiz show Pointless.

He grew up in Haywards Heath, West Sussex. His mum is a teacher, named Brenda White and his dad is named David Osman. When Richard was only nine years old, his dad walked out on the family, which created difficulty for the rest of his life. Richard’s older brother, Mat Osman, is the bassist for the rock band Suede.

Richard attended Warden Park School in Cuckfield. While he was still in school, he got his very first broadcasting experience, working as a regular contributor to Turn it Up, an open-access music show that went on every Sunday evening on BBC Radio Sussex.

From 1989 until 1992, he studied Sociology and Politics at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was a contemporary of Pointless co-presenter Alexander Armstrong, who read English Literature.

He began his career working as executive producer on many British game shows, including 8 out of 10 Cats (Channel 4 comedy panel), Deal or No Deal, and 10 O’Clock Live (a satirical comedy).

While working as the creative director at TV giant Endemol, he pitched the idea for Pointless to the BBC, becoming the co-presenter along with Alexander, when it began in 2009. He created the series where he’s jokingly referred to as Armstrong’s “pointless friend”. He previously worked exclusively in behind-the-camera roles for other shows.

Richard might be the one that provides all of the missing Pointless answers yet he is not involved in writing the questions and claims he isn’t as brainy as some might think. He is good at doing quizzes and words and he has a good memory. Since he cannot see very well, he has had to listen a ton and take in information very well.

In the year 2017, he started hosting Richard Osman’s House of Games, a series where four panelists compete in general knowledge tests in a variety of entertaining games five days a week. The overall winner’s crowned on Friday. There’s also a primetime version of the show that airs on Friday nights.

Richard’s also been a regular on game and panel shows like Would I Lie to You, Have I Got News For Your, and Taskmaster.

He was born with nystagmus, an eye condition that significantly reduces his vision, he memorizes entire scripts since this condition makes it tough to read an autocue.

Richard loves every sport, especially watching them. He remembers that when he was fifteen, staying up until after midnight to watch the 1985 snooker world final.

Richard’s debut novel, called “The Thursday Murder Club”, was released in the year 2020. His work is from the mystery genre. Viking Press acquired the rights to the novel for a seven-figure sum, in a ten publisher auction.

He wrote this novel in secret as he worked his other jobs before he sprung it on eager agents. In all, it took him eighteen months to write it. He gave it a month, then thought he quite liked it. Richard was doing a little bit less producing, and an idea came to him when he had the time and some discipline.

The idea came to him when he had a perfectly pleasant yet uneventful lunch to his mom’s friend in a retirement community. He noticed that the people were busy and rushing everywhere. Richard started chatting and found there to be some wit, talent, a sense of mischief, and wisdom of that generation. Then he thought it would be a great setting for a murder story. Then throw the very worst at each of them and see how they are able to deal with it.

Richard says that he is a major fan of crime fiction and believes it is the sort of book he would eventually write. Authors he likes include Agatha Christie, Patricia Highsmith, Jeffrey Deaver, Shari Lapena, and Harlan Coben. He feels that writing a mystery novel gives him the perfect excuse to think up a perfect murder, in case you should ever need one.

If Richard told the sixteen year old version of himself that he would end up writing a book, he would say, yes of course, it makes total sense. This is because at sixteen, he spent all his time with some paper and a pen, mainly just writing down jokes. Younger him would be incredibly proud of writing a novel however the first thing he would ask is how many copies did he sell?

“The Thursday Murder Club” is the first novel in the “Thursday Murder Club” series and was released in the year 2020. Four septuagenarians that have a few tricks hidden up their sleeves. A brutal murder. A female cop with her first big case. Welcome to The Thursday Murder Club.

In a quiet retirement community (Coopers Chase Retirement Village), four unlikely friends meet on a weekly basis in the Jigsaw Room so they can discuss unsolved crimes, and call themselves The Thursday Murder Club. Joyce, Ron, Elizabeth, and Ibrahim may be pushing eighty but they’ve got a few tricks hidden up their sleeves. Their goal is to solve cold cases, and they liven up the Jigsaw Room, turning it into quite the hotspot.

A local developer is discovered dead with a mysterious picture left next to the body, The Thursday Murder Club find themselves in the middle of their first live case all of a sudden. While the corpses start piling up, could our unorthodox yet brilliant group catch this killer, before time runs out?

It is this diverse group of characters Richard creates and develops and his tight plotting with many secrets and reveals, as well as the touches of humor that make this a delightful and entertaining read. This is a fun, thoughtful, offbeat, and engaging mystery novel and a nice change of pace from darker, grislier crime novels. The mysteries in the novel are intriguing and multilayered, and the cops have some warm and funny interactions with the lead characters.

I LOVE his books. I particularly love the way Elizabeth cares for her husband and loves him even though he has the beginnings of dementia. She is a lovely character. I love them all and it’s so nice that there’s a mixture of races, ‘English Class’ and all sorts of things. Need another one Richard!!!!

I have read all 4 books and cannot wait for the film, you make my day with the humorous characters and I see so many of the people at our Elderly Coffee Morning that I often chuckle and give them names from you’re series.
    Thank you.

I just finished “The Bullet That Missed” and thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I was dismayed that you named a character in the Acknowledgements, which I read before I finished the book, effectively giving away the ending. Please don’t do that again.

Hi Richard, I have been reading “The Thursday Murder Club.”
You can guess what I am going to say I’m sure.
    I love it!
Love the characters, the sense of place, the story, the intrigue.
    Fantastic fun.
If You ever needed help in life how fabulous to think you could turn to the “Cooper’s Chase” community for a bit of tea, cake and advice on where to go from here.
I want to belong to their gang. Who doesn’t?
    Excellent!
I look forward to reading many more of your books.
Very best wishes to you, and thanks for all the books, Diana.

Richard Osman is coming to Nashville this weekend. He will be at the Parnassus Books, one of the few independents left. I have just discovered him. After reading these comments, I can’t wait to get started. Always looking for a new author. Big thanks to “Book Series in Order”.

Just finished The Thursday Murder Club. Such a fun read! Can’t wait to share with friends! I’m 71 and agree with Kathy, nice to see the “old” folks aren’t always “the victim or crazies”! But I am writing because I am wondering if Joyce’s recipes are from your family? I am a baker and would love to have the recipes. Lemon Drizzle, Orange Drizzle and Coffee Walnut. Can’t do the gooseberry crumble. Around here the birds get the gooseberries, hardly have enough for jam! Thank you!
Off to start The Bullet That Missed now …

I enjoyed reading the Thursday Murder Club and The Man who died Twice. The original introducing senior citizens as people real people who have much to contribute to our Society still, was genius. The characters and their foibles both witty and endearingly recognisable, the genre captivating without the in depth blood guts and gore impressive, overall an entertaining read leaving you wanting more, hats off to Mr Osman and thank you.

I am halfway through The Thursday Murder Club. Am finding it an absolutely clever, witty and well crafted book to read. The characters are charming. Every day I can’t wait to sit with a coffee and this book to read a while. Am trying not to read it to fast as I don’t want the pleasure to end. Bravo to you Richard Osman. Will definitely be reading the rest of your books

I LOVE Thursday Murder Club. As a 76 year old woman, it’s refreshing to find a well written, intriguing mystery where the “old folks” aren’t always the victims or crazies, but are respected by the writer for the wealth of knowledge they hold. One doesn’t have to leap over tall buildings (or even hedges) to contribute to the world. Thank you you including us in your world.

One of the best books I have read, my taste has always been Agatha Christie’s, but I so enjoyed this one and I think it was partly due to what you refered to as, (a nice change of pace from the darker grislier crime novels.) I can hardly wait for September to get and read his next one.
