About Rodney Riesel
The American author Rodney Riesel is an adept writer of mystery novels that really keep the reader guessing throughout. Typically using hot and sunny locations to base his action in, he really manages to establish an atmosphere and ambiance quite unlike any other. This is something that has brought in many readers from around the world, giving him an international audience reaching far and wide. Knowing his readers well at this stage, he understands exactly what it is that they want and are looking for with each of his novels.
Not only does Riesel have a passion for writing, but he also has a love of the beach, which is a location that helps inspire a lot of his stories. Immersing his readers in the world, the novels manage to intrigue and entertain, as he plays with the rules and tropes of the genre. Turning it all on its head, he really works at creating something new and different in the process, establishing a unique approach to the format that’s all his own. His readers have come to appreciate this too, as they follow his idiosyncratic characters that manage to stand out and really leave an impact on them.
Largely looking at characters who enjoy a lifestyle of coastal living, much like himself, Riesel manages to put some of himself into his work. At the same time, though, he also works at allowing the stories to speak for themselves, with each of the characters having their own unique personality. This has managed to create and establish many memorable protagonists for a long time running, as they develop over the course of each mystery series. With a lot more to come yet, he’s definitely a writer with plenty to say, as his writing career continues to grow with each passing year.
Early and Personal Life
Growing up with a love of literature, Rodney Riesel would continually find inspiration in the world around him. Taking many ideas and putting it all back into his work, he’d focus on his keen interest in mystery novels, using this as the basis for much of his writing career. Over time he’d come to find his own idiosyncratic voice and style of writing, establishing his own approach to the genre.
Developing this voice over the intervening years, he’d refine and hone his style, while also establishing his love of the beach. Living in Herkimer in the state of New York for a long time, he would become happily married to his wife, spending a lot of time on the coast. This would lead to his writing career as it currently is, with a lot more stories and titles planned for release in the near future.
Writing Career
The first book that Rodney Riesel would release was titled ‘North Murder Beach,’ and it would come out back in 2014. Quickly finding an eager audience, Riesel would fast establish his name in the field of mystery novels, with many readers looking for what he had to say. This book would also be the first in his series of ‘Jake Stellar’ novels, following the intrepid North Myrtle beach detective Jake Stellar.
Later he’d follow up this book later that very same year with the title ‘The Man in Room Number Four,’ although this would be a different series. Starting up ‘The Dunquin Cove Story’ mystery series of novels, this would begin a new line of mystery fiction for the author. This would pave the way for a successful collection of novels to follow, with a number of series in the years to come, as he continues to write to this day.
Coasts From Christmas Past
Providing the third book that’s ‘From The Tales of Dan Coast,’ this continues in much the same vein as before with another mystery for the eponymous protagonist. Following his many case files, with a new mystery each novel, this would originally be brought out in 2014 on the 12th of April. Released through the ‘Island Holiday Publishing’ label, this would offer a solid mystery that’s self-contained, while also bringing over some character arcs.
It’s a fun novel that’s quick to read, making it an easy casual story for any summer vacation, which is especially the case given its primarily beach location. Light and breezy, the characters are also engaging, drawing the reader in, developing them, while also building on what before. The location itself is well established too, feeling fully immersive, almost becoming a character in of itself as the book progresses.
Looking to spend this Christmas by himself nursing a bottle, Dan Coast is suddenly interrupted by uninvited guests. That’s when a close friend finds themselves injured, and it seems that, according to the police, they were in a drug deal that went bad. This then leads Dan, along with Red his sidekick, to get on the case, heading over to the hospital where their unconscious friend awaits them with a new mystery. Will they be able to find the answers though? What really happened to Dan’s friend with the injury? Can they discover the truth through the coasts from Christmas past?
Dead in the Water
This was the fifth book in the ongoing ‘Jake Stellar’ series of mystery novels, as it would provide another case-file for the detective to solve. Fitting all the pieces together with expert precision, Riesel would initially publish this book back in 2017 on the 6th of August. Continuing on from the previous books, it gives the readers everything that they’d now come to expect from the series, and Riesel’s work in general, while also bringing in some new elements of its own. Published through ‘Island Holiday Publishing’ once again, it also paved the way for the following Jake Stellar novel, ‘Excited About Nothing.’
Finding his employer dead face down in her pool, the pool boy then finds himself the prime suspect at the heart of the case. Stepping up to solve the mystery, Jake Stellar takes on the case, and, along with the help of Avis Lint, must investigate Wanda Truman’s murder. Set in North Myrtle Beach, Stellar soon finds that there’s more to this case than first meets the eye, as the list of suspects continues to grow. Is the pool boy really guilty of murder? Can Stellar and Lint solve the case in time? What really happened to the woman now dead in the water?

Not only do I love your books, I’m hooked on tequila, 7-Up with a lime!
Is there a bar in Key West like Red’s? I’m going to Key West in December with my family.
I have been a fan of mystery novels since I read my first Travis McGee book back in the mid 60s. To this day i search for new writers who can capture that combination of lifestyle, suspense and engaging characters. One of my current favorites is Randy Wayne White. I truly have enjoyed your Dan Coast series…it has some “laugh out loud” moment …rarely found in today’s world. Thank you for sharing your wonderful craft….I love your books and especially Dan…Thank you Tom Harrison
I LOVE your books–especially Dan Coast! He reminds me of so many guys I know (sad, isn’t it?) Did you stop writing in 2021? Are you ok? I wish you’d write more.
I absolutely LOVE your books!!! You cannot write them fast enough for me. I enjoy the way all the series seem to intertwine in some way with the other. Keep doing what you are doing!!!
