Charles Veley
Charles Veley’s enjoyed Sherlock Holmes since he was a boy. Over the course of an entire year, he read the whole canon to his then-ten-year-old daughter during evening story time. She later became a historical novelist herself and works with him to write the Sherlock and Lucy” series of books.
He’s also a fan of Gilbert & Sullivan, and penned “The Pirates of Finance”, a new musical in the tradition of G&S that won an award at the New York Musical Theatre Festival.
Except for “The Last Moriarty” and “The Wilhelm Conspiracy”, every one of the books on his Amazon Author Page were written during his time as a full-time author during the late seventies and early eighties.
He works for United Technologies Corporation, where he focuses mainly on creating sustainability and value for the company’s large real estate development projects.
Charles finds it exhilarating to write about Sherlock, finding him (and his daughter) to be in a wonderful tradition with a ton of brilliant company. Holmes is so familiar to both of them that it is a joy imagining just what he would do when he’s faced with a certain issue. They wondered just how the readers would respond to bringing a daughter into Sherlock’s life, however the overwhelming majority of reviews support this idea.
Charles’ debut novel, called “Children of the Dark”, was released in the year 1979. His work is from the historical mystery genre.
“The Last Moriarty” is the first novel in the “Sherlock and Lucy” series and was released in the year 2014. Watson narrates. Intrigue, murder, and one long-buried secret that’s going to change everything. London in 1895. A gorgeous American actress visits 221B Baker Street, desperate for Sherlock Holmes to keep her safe from a menacing and mysterious man that’s recently shown up in her life.
Holmes feels compelled to help this young woman, however he has been asked to solve an urgent case with some international implications. One of John D. Rockefeller’s close associates has been murdered, and Holmes suspects this violent act is an effort to derail the upcoming British-American summit. Clues to the murder point right to Professor Moriarty, proving that while Holmes’ old nemesis might be dead, his criminal enterprise is still alive and well.
To keep an international disaster from happening, he has to figure out who’s pulling the strings now and why. While racing to locate the real culprit, another woman steps into his life, somebody from his past and presents him with a mystery that’s going to force him to look deep inside for answers. Will he be able to solve the riddle from his own past, protect the young actress, and prevent chaos on either side of the Atlantic?
This is a fast-paced and witty Holmes novel with a labyrinth of thrilling turns and twists. It stays faithful to the original series’ spirit, while it offers up new adventures for new and old fans alike.
“The Wilhelm Conspiracy” is the second novel in the “Sherlock and Lucy” series and was released in the year 2016. An eve-of-war catastrophe. Two oddly connected murders. One new sleuth determined to help Holmes against the odds.
London in 1896. A prominent banker’s found dead in one unsavory section of the city. Hours later, the charred remains of another corpse are found on a beach in Dover. There’s one intriguing connection between the murders that brings the case right to the forefront of Sherlock’s attention.
This famed detective’s investigation has barely started, but when the Secretary of War summons him with catastrophic news. On the eve of war, there’s a new British superweapon that’s fallen into the wrong hands. Holmes has to recover it, or risk dooming all of England to a dark fate for many future generations.
Holmes and Watson make some plans to track down the weapon in Germany, where Brits aren’t welcome and dangers are everywhere. They aren’t alone in their endeavors: over Holmes’ stern objection, Lucy, his newly found grown daughter insists upon helping this duo locate the weapon and solve the two murders.
Lucy’s sleuthing abilities prove just as formidable as her dad’s, and quickly, the trail of clues in Germany lead these detectives to this evil plot that puts them right in the line of fire. Could they possibly evade danger, solve this double murder, and save the whole Empire?
This is a fast-paced and thrilling take on one of the classic Sherlock who-done-its, complete with some unexpected turns and twists and some international intrigue. It is a feel good mystery with a twist ending.
“Remember, Remember” is the third novel in the “Sherlock and Lucy” series and was released in the year 2017. Lucy narrates. A dastardly assassination plot, a loss of identity, and one woman that has to solve both riddles to save her loved ones.
London in 1896. One cold November morning, a lovely American actress wakes up face-down on the pavement right outside the British Museum. She’s got no memory of who she is, or what’s happened to her. Just a dim memory of the name “Sherlock Holmes”.
The hunt for clues to her real identity takes her to one alarming revelation: she might’ve killed somebody, and there’s somebody trying to kill her. Desperate to learn the truth and save her own life, she digs a little deeper, just to learn that she isn’t the only target.
Backed by one familiar enemy, menacing figures have plotted an assassination at the British Museum. While the young actress works on learning more about this evil plan, her memory comes back. She realizes she’s none other than Lucy James, Sherlock Holmes’ daughter. Now she has to put her inherited sleuthing skills to the very test while she, Watson, and Holmes work with each other to foil this assassination attempt.
However their adversaries are cunning and ruthless, and it makes success far from a sure thing. Could they escape this peril and defeat these would-be killers? Or is Lucy going to lose all that she holds dear?
These books have a feisty and strong heroine, and a bit of romance thrown in. This stays faithful to the classic series while still showing the real value of friendship and family.
