Author Steve Higgs writes the “Blue Moon Investigations” series of urban fantasy novels. The series began publication in the year 2017, when “Paranormal Nonsense” was released.
The series is Steve’s first love and the series that got him going as a novelist. Tempest Michaels, who was first conceived during the twilight days of his Army career, was his solution to him hearing so many people comment about their own supernatural experiences.
Tempest didn’t plan on being a paranormal investigator. In fact, he is convinced that everything supernatural is but rubbish, not much more than fanciful imaginations of people that are willing to pick the improbable explanation over a rational one.
Over the course of the series, he finds he is thrown up against all manner of bad guys, from ghosts and witches to vampires and werewolves. There’s even a yeti for him to take on. With the often questionable aid of his buddies and family, the relationship advice Mr. Wriggly gives, whose one-track mind is never all that helpful, and the companionship from Bull and Dozer, his two dogs, his business goes from one strength to another.
It doesn’t take him too long before he realizes that he needs another detective which is where Amanda Harper comes in. She’s the first character that gets introduced in the first novel. No quicker does he hire Amanda, than he takes an assistant on as well. Jane Butterworth gets adventures of her own, too.
“Paranormal Nonsense” is the first novel in the “Blue Moon Investigations” series and was released in the year 2017. To Tempest, the paranormal is only nonsense, however proving it could get him killed.
He refuses to say what he did when he was in the army, since it isn’t important. But he points out that he learned some skills. These skills prove useful, for sure, however he didn’t pick his second career as a paranormal and doesn’t even believe in werewolves and vampires. Sometimes, he secretly worries he could be wrong.
People call on Tempest to solve cases too strange for the cops to take. Like just today, a third victim was discovered with a bite mark in their lifeless throat. It is happening in his town and he takes this kind of thing personally. Tempest takes the case without even having a client, however a client shows up in the form of Amanda Harper, who is a disillusioned cop that was the killing to stop just as much as he does.
Together, along with some back up from some friends, they are going after whatever creature is behind these deaths, but his probing draws its attention and now his family are being hunted. When somebody he knows gets taken, a race against the clock starts which is going to pitch him into a fight for his life. It’s a good thing he’s got those skills then.
“The Phantom of Barker Mill” is the second novel in the “Blue Moon Investigations” series and was released in the year 2017. Why can’t Tempest turn down some woman in distress?
He took a case from a tearful, yet very rich widow Barker. Her husband died supposedly by a century-old phantom’s hands. He owned Barker steel mill and it doesn’t take very long for Tempest to realize that something’s quite strange is happening there.
That isn’t all however, as a spectral dog’s eaten a bloke at a junkyard and he is supposed to work out just how to get him back. Everybody’s lying to him about everything, however Tempest’s most difficult test is dealing with the aftermath of his dumb choice in hiring Amanda Harper. Not that she isn’t capable, talented, and intelligent because she’s every one of those things. She is also massively distracting and incredibly gorgeous. She is going to prove an asset, no doubt about it. Assuming they make it through the week, of course.
“Amanda Harper Paranormal Detective” is the third novel in the “Blue Moon Investigations” series and was released in the year 2017. Is Amanda going to have his soul sucked out by some malevolent spirit? That’s what former cop colleague and BFF Patience believes is going to happen.
Amanda is a paranormal detective with the Blue Moon Investigation Agency. As of today, that is, and her very first case is at the local shopping mall where horrified shoppers make hysteric claims that a ghost attacked them in the elevators. Not one elevator, but all of them.
Sounds like it’d be an easy case, right? That’s what she told herself. However, nothing in life could have prepared her for the chaos she’s about to face. Despite all of the craziness, the unexpected fighting, and chases, she has to solve this matter in order to justify her employment. Unfortunately, she’s got no clue what she’s doing, she still works her her notice period on the force, and has got a date tonight.
Amanda is going to find this ghost, she’s certain, but why would she invite her sassy BFF Patience Woods to help out.
“Klowns of Kent” is the fourth novel in the “Blue Moon Investigations” series and was released in the year 2018. There may be no such thing as vampires, ghosts, or werewolves, but apparently, evil Klowns are totally real.
Tempest Michaels once again investigates ridiculous cases that aren’t even close to paranormal in nature. But his daily menu of fun gets interrupted by a plague of guys dressed in some garish attire. They wear twisted clown makeup while terrorizing Kent villages and towns with more frequent and escalating attacks.
These Klowns should really be a case for the cops but their leader seems to have serious beef with Tempest and are coming for him and anybody that steps in their way. Who are these Klowns and what do they want? What’s with all the ridiculous smiles?
If they weren’t enough nuisance for Tempest, he’s foolishly hired a woman he is totally captivated by. Attempting to ignore Mr. Wriggly’s thoughts on the matter, he goes for his silver medal, a girl that he lusted over years ago while in school. While Mr. Wriggly may not care a bit about the difference, is Tempest’s heart truly in it?

Thanks Graeme. The Blue Moon aeries are great aren’t they. They are for me, and I’ve bought the first four in the series (or including Klowns of Kent). But not having Kindle I find the hardbacks quite expensive so am probably limited as to how many I’ll be able to get.

One thing you could do is get the Kindle App on your computer or phone, sign up at Kindle Unlimited for a month or so and read them all that way.

I was enquiring as to what age group of readers the Blue Moon Investigations are intended? ? The series sounds good but didn’t know if they were children’s books. I am age 72 but feel a certain affinity for Steve Higgs as I live in Kent (Aylesford) where the books seem to be based, I worked in the MOD and I’ve written a couple of locally set fantasy adventure books myself ( The Dreamcatchers and The Shadow Dancers). The Blue Moon books do sound good (I enjoy tales of the unknown etc) and I can imagine myself also sharing the same sense of humour as Mr Higgs (Steve) so I may well order one anyway to see ( which is the only way to tell really isn’t it).
Anyway, enough of my mindless drivel, thanks for your time and any details of the books would great, I confess to only hearing of them today – possibly hidden gems then?

Hi Malcolm – most positive reviews for the books appear to be from adults. I saw one saying he was the British Jim Butcher. So I’d say would probably be worth giving them a try – you’ll know after one if it is for you or not 🙂
You may haveaswered your own question. However, having enjoyed the whole series I would say they are definitely adult.
