Jeremy Robert Johnson
Jeremy Robert Johnson is a horror writer with an exceptional talent for storytelling. The gifted author is best known for his short stories that have earned him a nomination in the Pushcart Prize, Bram Stoker Award, and the Needle Award, among others. Johnson’s list of published works continues to increase by the day, and if his recent novels are anything to go by, his writing keeps on getting better.
Angel Dust Apocalypse
Angel Dust Apocalypse tells the stories of human-made monsters, meth-heads, and Neo-Nazis who will kill everything on their path. The world is filled with death, and the non-dead are doing everything possible to claw out of their bleak reality. Even those who claim to be self-aware are doing more damage than good, and the war-scarred future does not offer any hope. Through different characters, the author paints a perfect picture of a country that has gone to the dogs. Nothing is safe anymore and even those trusted to bring some level of sanity cannot be trusted.
This is a riveting anthology, and reading it feels like taking a journey to an idyllic end of the world. Here you will meet a man determined to shock people who are already beyond shocked, and another with an irrational phobia that is completely consuming. You will also get to read about a burdening brotherhood fueled by spite instead of love, among other stories. All the characters in these stories are deeply flawed, and the author portrays them in a way that shows they are beyond help.
From his writing, it is clear that the author is not in love with his characters. This is absurd given that most of these characters have gone to extreme lengths to be loved. From body modification to self-dissection, the characters will do anything to be appreciated and admired. However, while most people would feel sorry for them, the author treats them as pathetic as their attempts. This works perfectly with this genre, and it is great that the author is honest about what he feels about them. It is shocking how these situations are similar to what is happening today. There are enough people in the world who are so twisted and will do anything to fit in with the crowd.
One outstanding thing about these stories in how captivating and conversational they are. The tone is accompanied by a horrific, heartbreaking, or hilarious plot to create captivating and almost addictive stories. From the writing style to the characters, it is safe to say that this novel is flawless. The stories range from beautiful to ugly and everything in between. Regardless of the content, all the stories are riveting and powerful.
Angel Dust Apocalypse welcomes you to an unsafe place where humans are compulsive and evil lurk in every corner. You have the option to turn back, but like any other reader who has picked this book, you will continue sinking deeper into this dark and well-written story. Out of the about twenty stories in this anthology, very few of them are actually horror stories. However, all have so much depth that you cannot help connecting with the characters despite their weaknesses. If you are looking for a cleverly written, thought-provoking, and entertaining read, you will love this book. The stories are not as bizarre as such, but they will make you think, feel, and ponder.
Skullcrack City
Skullcrack City stars S.P. Doyle, a number head who has been going a little heavy on the drug thanks to his work. Since he felt that the corporate world was killing him from the inside, Doyle decides to bring the system down from the inside by exposing all their dirty secrets. However, after he discovers something horrific in some bank files, he is framed for murder. This traps Doyle in a conspiracy so huge he is sure that he cannot deal with it alone. While he is doing his best to survive among crooked conglomerates, Doyle knows that it will not take long before the system catches up with her. What is a man to do in such a situation?
With the help of Deckard, his turtle pet, and Dara, Doyle embarks on a mission to save humankind. He will be going against experimental surgeons, freak show celebs, and doped mutants, but at least he has Dora, the beautiful missionary with a questionable past on his side. Things will become more complicated as Doyle and his small team uncover more secrets. They have to work in secret to safeguard their lives before they realize that they, just like the rest of human kind, are in grave danger. Can Doyle and Dara risk their life for a worthy cause? Can they, with their limited resources, go against the high and mighty?
This is a four-course-meal kind of novel. It comes with horror, enough action, unrivaled imagination, and a good dose of humor. The story is so well-written it will blow your mind, and it is remarkable how the author has stitched different genres into a masterpiece. Plot-wise, this story reads like three books in one. The first part is centered on Doyle and his trouble at work. His work pushes him into drugs, which makes him go all crazy, but he is not going down without a fight. The second part starts when Doyle discovers that the conspiracy is real. It is clear that the bank is up to no good, and Doyle is at the center of it all. Can he sit back and watch everything he has worked for go up in flames? The third part is a rollercoaster. You will barely get a chance to catch your breath, and every page reads like the best work ever written.
If you are in the mood for a page-turning read, Skullcrack City is a perfect choice. The weirdness escalates as the story unfolds, and when it explodes, it is a race all the way to the end. This book will leave you with a lot to think about, and Doyle will stay in your mind for a long time.
