Kristina McMorris is an American author who made her writing debut in 2011 with the release of her first book, Letters From Home. That book was originally inspired by her grandparents’ letters of courtship to each other during World War II that lead to their marriage. Letters From Home was named a must-read by Woman’s Day Magazine. The book then went on to be a Doubleday/Literary Guild selection, an RWA Golden Heart finalist, and a 2011 Goodreads Choice Awards semifinalist for Best Historical Fiction.
McMorris’ second book, Bright of Scarlet Leaves, was a 2013 nominee for the RITA Award. In her career, McMorris has earned more than twenty national literary awards and multiple nominations.
Kristina is also a workshop presenter and the member of several organizations for writers. She attended Pepperdine University where she earned her B.S. in International Marketing. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and children. She was born in Seattle and was actually saved as a newborn by the Seattle Children’s Hospital so she has used her life and status to be an advocate of many charitable causes for children’s health and wellbeing.
Before she embarked on her writing career, Kristina worked as a television host for a variety of weekly shows. She got her start at age nine and actually worked on an Emmy award winning show. She would then move into the world of PR as she used her college degree to work as the PR Director of an international conglomerate. She had so much success in her career that she was named one of Portland’s “40 Under 40” by The Business Journal.
Letters From Home is Kristina’s lovely debut novel of World War II romantic fiction. The book starts in Chicago 1944 where Liz Stephens is showing little interest in attending a USO Club dance. Her friends want to go, but she has no interest in flirting with lonely servicemen as she is already set to marry her childhood sweetheart. She ends up going anyway at her friend’s urging and something changes when she gets a glimpse of Morgan McClain. Nothing happens between the two as Morgan is more interested in her friend Betty, but she has a hard time forgetting him.
Morgan ends up going to war and strikes up correspondence with Betty – or so he thinks. Betty asks Julia to ghostwrite for her and the two grow close through the letters. Morgan uses them to help him get through the brutality of the war while Liz finds herself baring her soul to him. She is torn by her feelings for a man who doesn’t even know her true identity. Julia and Betty each end up in their own romantic entanglements, and as the war nears its end the three of them will all see their love lives change in remarkable ways.
Another great book by McMorris is Sold On A Monday. The book starts with a sign scrawled on the porch in 1931 that simply reads “2 Children for Sale”. It’s a time of breadlines, bank runs, impossible choices, and despair across the country. Ellis Reed is a struggling reporter and the sign ends up evoking memories of his own family’s dark past. He takes a photo of the children, not for publication, but then the image ends up leading to his big break and a way out of the despair. There are consequences though and they are devastating in ways that he couldn’t have possibly imagined.
Lillian Palmer is someone who sees the picture and she is drawn to it. She decides to meet up with Ellis to right the wrongdoing and try to mend a fractured family. The deed will come at great personal risk to both of them, but it is worth it to right what’s wrong.
McMorris also wrote The Edge of Lost. This is a dual story about a young girl gone missing at Alcatraz in 1937 and a young man years earlier who leaves the pubs of Ireland to head to America. The girl is the daughter of a prison guard and one of the youngest people on the island. The only one that can help find her is a bank robber named Tommy Capello. While years earlier, Shanley Keagan makes the decision to leave behind his dingy existence and head to America to find his real father. McMorris skillfully weaves together the two stories to tell the story of the lengths of loyalty, sacrifice, and betrayal people will go to to survive.
