G R Jordan
G R Jordan is a self-published mystery author who decided to unleash his creative beast when he turned Forty. After graduating from Loughborough University, Jordon pulled a pallet truck, worked in cereal flakes manufacturing, and later joined the Scottish air traffic controllers. However, he never felt settled until he started writing. Jordan’s writing is characteristic of the conflicts most people experience once they hit midlife. The characters in his writing are either wonderous or horrific, and the dilemmas they go through just as diverse. After living in most of the UK, Jordan is now based in Scotland. He lives in the Isle of Lewis with his wife and their young family.
Water’s Edge
Water’s Edge is the first book in the Highlands & Islands series. The book stars detective Inspector Macleod, a man who has been in the Glasgow Police for over 20 years. Macleod is conservative, and his Presbyterian faith is an integral part of his life. When he is paired with a new partner, Macleod wonders if the two will ever get along. Detective Hope McGrath is free-spirited, carefree, and everything Macleod is not. Hope’s new partner also finds her dressing provocative. However, this young woman in her twenties is immensely talented, which explains why she is paired with Macleod.
When the body of a young woman is discovered at the water edge on the Isle of Lewis, this unlikely duo swings into action. It has been twenty years since Macleod set foot on the island, he called home after losing his wife. Coming back to the site where he lost it all trigger feelings that Macleod thought he had put behind him. As he mourns his wife’s loss all over again, Macleod has to work with his partner and the local police to unravel the mystery behind the killing. What evil person would go to the extent of slitting the throat of this young woman? What has become of the conservative Island where Macleod was raised?
This is a well-plotted story that you are sure to enjoy. There are numerous twists and turns, so it is hard to predict what happens next. With plenty of action and unending suspense, the author takes you through a mysterious murder case and the processes involved to catch the killers. It is incredible how Macleod stands by his faith but also works to accommodate those with an opposing view on life. In the end, both Macleod and Hope come to appreciate their strengths and the features that make them tick. The Scottish Highlands setting is quite intriguing, while Jordan’s writing style is a welcome break from the ordinary.
If you are a fan of police procedurals, you will love Water’s Edge. The plot is continually developing and moving, which means that there will not be a dull moment here. While Macleod comes off as uptight in the beginning, you will fall in love with him once you know his better. Hope is just as likable as described in the beginning, and it is fun reading her point of view in different circumstances. The author had done a great job of developing all characters, primary or otherwise, making them easy to relate with. Will Macleod and his partner find the killer before things get out of hand? You will have to read this book to the end to find out.
The Bothy
The Bothy is the second book in the Highlands & Islands detective series. DI Jordan and DC Hope managed to solve their first case together, and their work relationship is off to a good start. Now the duo is involved in yet another murder case, this time around involving a cultish lifestyle. It is right in the middle of winter, and Macleod is headed for the Black Isle to solve another murder mystery. Two lovers were burnt out in a love nest, and the locals are in shock over the crime’s cruelty. Who could have targeted the couple, and what was their motivation? Do the locals have a course for alarm where this case is concerned?
Once Macleod and his feisty partner start their investigation, it becomes clear that they are dealing with a criminal who can strike again. This means that they have to move fast before more people lose their lives. Macleod has to find a link between a cultish family and a radio station that is permanently retiring its staff to unravel the mystery. Could there be a secret that someone is willing to kill to keep hidden? Can Macleod and his partner uncover the shadowy relationships pushing someone to go to the extent of killing? How many people are involved in this cultish lifestyle?
This book will take you on one hell of a roller-coaster. As the temperatures around him continue to drop, Macleod has no option but to go out there and solve a murder case before more lives are lost. It is great to interact with Macleod and Hope again and witness as their relationship gets better. The plot is quite solid, and the cast adds a lot of the character to the story. While the storyline has many layers, it is easy to follow as everything unfolds systematically. Sure, there are many unforeseen twists, but everything makes sense in the end. There is also something unique about the Black Isle setting and the timing of the crime.
The Bothy is a brilliant police procedural featuring talented detectives, an elusive killer, and a dangerous cult. With a self-righteous killer wiling to play God on the loose, Macleod and Hope have to be on top of their game to stop this madness before more lives are lost. The action starts from the first page, and things get very tense as the mystery unravel. There is an unexpected twist towards the end that will throw you completely off balance. Think you already have the killer figured out? You can be sure that the ending will catch you by surprise. Yet another thrilling piece that will hold your attention to the end.
