Megan Lindholm is an American published best-selling author.
The author was born on March 5, 1952 in Berkeley, California. Megan Lindholm is a pen name used by Margaret Astrid Lindholm Ogden. She also uses the pen name Robin Hobb. She is the creator of the Realm of the Elderlings, in which five series are set. This began with Assassin’s Apprentice’s publication in 1995 and concluded in 2017 with Assassin’s Fate.
Margaret lived with her family in Berkeley, California before moving to Fairbanks, Alaska at ten. She grew up there, graduating high school and then attending the University of Denver, staying there for a year before coming back to Alaska. She got married at 18 years old to Fred Ogden, moving to Kodiak together.
The author started her career by selling a short story successfully to a magazine for children, kicking off a career where she initially wrote for children. Her work appeared in magazines such as Highlights, Jack and Jill, and Humpty Dumpty. Margaret would also write educational material.
Margaret started writing short fantasy in the seventies published in magazines like Space and Time. She sold her first fantasy story with “Bones for Dulath”. It was featured in the Amazons! anthology in 1979 with recurring characters that would crop up in later stories, Vandien and Ki. The anthology would win a World Fantasy Award. Another story with the same characters showed up in Fantastic Stories in 1980, titled “The Small One”.
She kept publishing under the sole pen name of Megan Lindholm until 1995, when she added one more. The author began using her pen name of Robin Hobb in 1995, continuing to write in the fantasy genre.
Her debut novel under her Megan Lindholm pen name was Harpy’s Flight. Published in 1983, it was the first book in the Windsinger series. The series also featured the characters Ki and Vandien. Some of her short stories were featured in Liavek, a shared world anthology, from 1985 until 1988. She also authored a novel with Steven Brust titled The Gypsy. It was released in paper book format and on a multimedia CD that had the book text and the album Songs From the Gypsy by Boiled in Lead as a soundtrack. It also had songs composed by Steven Brust and band mate Adam Stemple. Through the years she has continued to use the pen name of Lindholm, writing under it for a story featured in Year’s Best SF 18, a 2013 anthology.
Lindholm received a prize from the Alaska State Council of the Arts in 1981 for “The Poaching”, a short story. The pen name has also been used for works that have become finalists for the Hugo Award and the Nebula Award. Lindholm won the Asimov’s Readers Award as well. She also traveled to London in 2014 to attend the 72nd World Science Fiction Convention as a guest of honor.
Under her Robin Hobb name she published her debut novel, Assassin’s Apprentice. It would be the first book in what would become three trilogies. The book features main character FitzChivalry Farseer and a character known as the Fool. The sequel came out in 1996, Royal Assassin, and in 1997 Assassin’s Quest was published. The characters also returned in her Tawny Man trilogy. The nine novels that made up the trilogies sold more than a million copies.
Other books published under the Hobb name included a series about trader families and living ships, starting with Ship of Magic and continuing with The Mad Ship and then Ship of Destiny. In 2009, her Rain Wild Chronicles would be released. They take place in the same world as the trilogies. Her novels comprising the Soldier Son trilogy are set in a different world. The author also published a short story collection titled The Inheritance that has stories using both pseudonyms. She later used the Hobb name to compose the trilogy Fitz and the Fool.
Megan Lindholm is the creator and author of the Reindeer People series of fictional novels. It started in 1988 with the publication of The Reindeer People. She would follow that up with the sequel Wolf’s Brother in 1988 as well.
The Reindeer People is the debut novel in the series by the same name. The book takes place in North America during prehistoric times, set in a wilderness that can often be anything but kind.
This is the tale of a tribe made up of hunters and nomads and follows the group’s attempts to survive in the world. This is hard won as they are constantly having to fight enemy tribes, fend off wolf packs, and try to find a way to live off the land.
Main character Tillu has always found her own way as part of the tribe but sticking to the outskirts. She has a son named Kerlew who has a dreamy way, and she enjoys spending time with him. She also communes with the spirits for the purposes of making the sick well again and blessing new births.
Tillu doesn’t like the Shaman of the group, an unattractive older man named Carp. She thinks his magic is off, but he wants to take hold of Kerlew and Tillu. She knows his magic is going to take away her child and her soul too if she is not careful. While the outside world alone means near certain death, Tillu has no doubts about leaving if she’s going to be away from the shaman.
What will happen? Will the Shaman come for her and her son? Read The Reindeer People to find out!
Wolf’s Brother is the second novel in the Reindeer People series of novels by Megan Lindholm.
Tillu’s son was always special. Now she knows it for sure. Kerlew is blessed with a strong type of magic that makes him able to call to the spirit world and beasts. His magic continues to grow with every passing day.
