The Bibliophile Mysteries is a series of thriller and mystery novels based on the cozy mystery genre. The famous American novelist Kate Carlisle is the author of the novels of the series. The series consists of a total of nine mystery books that were published between the years 2009 and 2015. All the novels in the series are based on the life of the central character named Brooklyn Wainwright living in San Francisco, California. The author Kate Carlisle has described Brooklyn Wainwright as an expert of rare books as well as a skilled surgeon. Throughout the series, Brooklyn gets involved in some or the other mysteries and uses her specials skills and dedication to solve the mysteries and make the city a better place to live once again. Author Kate Carlisle wrote the first novel of the series in the year 2009 and since then has made sure to publish at least one book in the series every year. The series is currently ongoing and author Kate Carlisle has finished writing a few more books in the series. She is busy giving the finishing touches to the further novels of the series, after which she is going to release them later this year and the next year as well.

The main protagonist Brooklyn Wainwright has been described by the author as a bookbinder based in San Francisco, California, apart from being a skillful surgeon. Other than treating her patients with utmost care, Brooklyn makes sure that no book gets damaged in front of her eyes. She is an avid bookbinder and has a vast collection of rare books. With the passage of time, the twisting plots of the series force her to carry out several investigations that become helpful in solving several mysteries around the city of San Francisco. Brooklyn Wainwright’s habit of collecting rare books often lands her in trouble. On one such occasion, when her mentor dies after handing over her a rare book by Johan Wolfgang Von Goethe for safekeeping, she gets framed for the murder of her mentor as well as for robbing her mentor by taking away the rare book. Brooklyn has to use all her determination and will power to bring out the truth and clear her name from the criminal activities that she had not committed and was framed in it. Situations and plots like this continue in almost all the novels of the series. The descriptions of a couple of the initial books in the Bibliophile Mysteries as given by the author Kate Carlisle, are as follows.

The first novel of the series, Bibliophile Mysteries was published in the year 2009 by the NAL publishing house. The novel was titled ‘Homicide in Hardcover’ and was set in San Francisco, California, United States. The novel introduced the central characters of the series Brooklyn Wainwright, Derek Stone and the curator named Ian McCullough, as well as the secondary characters in the form of Robson Benedict, the Avatar, Abraham Karastovsky and some others. Before writing the first novel of the series, author Kate Carlisle was aware of the fact that a murder mystery is always a better tool to make a novel successful bestseller. This inspired her to pen down the mystery novel featuring the main character Brooklyn Wainwright. The opening plot of the novel introduces Brooklyn Wainwright as a hardcore book lover, who has the habit of collecting the rare books from all parts of the country. If it would have been according to her way of administrating the city of San Francisco, its streets would have been lined with the hardcovers of the rare books all over. Her expertise in the rare book collection had made her a known personality in the city. However, she also had her fair share of bad luck as her mentor was found dead, drowned in the pool of his own blood during the celebration of the restoration of his latest book.

Before dying, the mentor gives a cryptic message to Brooklyn and hands her a supposedly cursed and extremely priceless copy of the book Faust written by author Johan Wolfgang Von Goethe for safekeeping. However, the turn up of the situation seems to be going against Brooklyn as she gets accused of murder of her mentor and theft his priceless book. She gets some respite from the British security officer named Derek Stone, who seems to be attractive, but humorless and believes that she might not be the one who has killed her mentor. Derek allows Brooklyn to do the investigation on her own in order clear her name from the crime. Hence, she begins to collect the clues left by her mentor and starts studying them with full dedication so as to restore justice. Also, being a skillful surgeon, Brooklyn does not like to see her books dying in front of her, just like her patients and makes full attempts to save them. Even her friend and a former employer named Abraham Karastovsky has the same attitude towards rare books. After the death of her mentor, Brooklyn begins to search all her books in order to find the clue behind the secret message given to her by her mentor before his death. He quoted in her ears, ‘Remember the Devil’ and it kept her guessing till the end of the novel. The novel became quite successful and went on to become one of the finalists of the National Readers Choice Award in the year 2009.

The second novel of the series was published under the title ‘If Books Could Kill’. It was published in the year 2009 by the NAL publishing house. The plot of the novel opens up with the book restoration expert and the main character of the series, Brooklyn Wainwright, who seems to be happy to attend the world famous Edinburgh Book Fair. The fair is also attended by her ex lover Kyle McVee, who turns up with the original copy of a controversial text that had the power to change the history of the prestigious British monarchy. With the view of diverting her mind from the disturbing story of Kyle, Brooklyn decides to take a tour of the city, only to come across a dead body, which turns out to be of Kyle’s. Once again, she gets framed for a crime that she had not committed. However, she seems determined to conduct her own investigation, which lead her to a number of possible suspects who had the motive of killing Kyle McVee. Brooklyn suspects that Kyle might have been murdered to stop him from spreading out the 200 year old preserved secrets of the British monarchy. However, she is required to find valid proofs to turn her suspicion into reality.

Homicide in Hardcover, (Book # 1 in the Bibliophile mystery series), drew me into the storyline of Brooklyn, her expertise as a restorer of rare books, and the dead body she stumbles upon highlighted by her fainting at the sight of blood all make for a very good read!!!! I am enjoying reading each of the books in this great series!!!

Thank you for the information included in each story about how a book restoration is achieved through slow and careful attention to detail. Until I read this series, I was unaware how any damaged book could be repaired, and not just thrown away!!!
