Tim Powers
Tim Powers is a fantasy author best known for his award-winning novels, The Annubis Gates, Declare, and Last Call. Powers has written a lot about secret histories, which means that his works feature famous people and documented historical events. However, he also incorporates supernatural factors that give his stories a unique twist and offer a refreshing feel of historical events. The New-York born author studied English Literature and published his first novels in the 1970s. Power’s list of published works has grown over the years to include over one hundred fantasy novels. When he is not writing, Powers teaches high school students part-time in addition to mentoring upcoming science fiction/ fantasy authors.

The Anubis Gates
The Anubis Gates is the first book in the Anubis Gates series. This story features Brendan Doyle, a specialist in nineteenth-century English literature. It is 1983, and the California-based professor reluctantly accepts to take part in a time-travel trip that will take him over one century back. Brendan is offered this job by a crazy millionaire who has been paid a million dollars by each of his rich clients looking to attend Coleridge’s lecture of 1805. The returns are handsome, and given his love for everything Coleridge and his contemporary, William Ashbless, Brendan figures that this trip will be worth all the risks.
Brendan’s role is to guide time-traveling tourists and get a chance to attend Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s lecture in 1810. However, as is common in time-traveling stores, something goes wrong, and Brendan gets stick in the early-nineteenth-century London. Here, he will be confronted by dark forces that know everything about the time-travel gates, get to meet and become friends with Coleridge, and witness rivaling beggars, among other bizarre events. While there is nothing funny about being unable to return to his time. Brendan gets a chance to learn more about the Ashbless than he ever thought possible. Will Brendan manage to get himself and the rest of the team out of this situation? How will he survive all the dark forces that seem determined to eliminate him?
This is an intriguing story that vividly depicts life in the early 1800s. The writing is outstanding, and the plot twists will keep you guessing the next events. Featuring diverse magicians, competing beggars’ camps, body-swapping ape-men, and other kinds of craziness, this story has a lot going on. Brendan will have to figure out a way of surviving without antibiotics, outsmarting an ancient sorcerer, and confronting unpleasant clowns, brain-washed Lord Byron, and a good number of assassins. The action in this story is non-stop, and you cannot help but wonder how Brendan will get himself out of his current situation.

The Anubis Gates is a fun travel story that is both informative and entertaining. Join a history lover in his travels through different parts of the past and some of his outstanding experiences. The author does a good job of portraying different characters and feelings in addition to painting a perfect picture of an era; all of us can only dream about. You will find Brendan intriguing, his adventures exciting and his fears somehow laughable. Overall, this book is thought-provoking and intriguing, and the pacing is consistent from cover to cover. This is a perfect novel for time-travel story fans.

On Stranger Tides
On Stranger Tides features John Chandagnac, a former puppeteer and accountant. John is sailing to Jamaica from England in search of stolen inheritance when his Ship is taken over by pirates. The Ship’s captain gives John two options, die or join the seafaring band. After taking up his new position as a brigand, Candagnac changes his name to John Shandy. The fabulous loot and battles he encounters across the Caribbean waters are nothing compared to the powerful sorcery he witnesses in his new dark world. Living amongst people who are considered outcasts changes John’s outlook on life, and he also learns tricks to fight his natural and supernatural enemies. Will John get out of this voyage alive? How about the inheritance he was chasing?
Things get more interesting when Shandy sets on a sail for his love of magically exposed Beth Hurwood. On these unfamiliar waters, Shady will be forced to confront a ghost-infested pirate king, and an assorted crew made up of the dead and living on his journey to the Fountain of Youth. Through John’s experiences, you will meet historical figures such as Ann Bonny, Jim Davies, and Jack Shandy, to mention but a few. There is also a lot to learn from this book. For example, the term buccaneer was coined from the word buccan, which is a wooded grid placed over a fire that was used to smoke meat or fish. You will also learn about the origin of pirates and whatever happened when Spanish authorities attempted to get rid of them.

This book comes with all the right ingredients to a beautiful story. There are the pirates, numerous sea battles, unhinged scientists, voodoo monsters, the fountain of youth, and even a damsel in distress. The pirates are their usual robbing, fighting, drinking, and cursing selves. Powers describes magic in a way that it sounds believable, and in this fiction world, it is everywhere, from the air to the water and blood. The Erebus trip is particularly outstanding, what with its ghosts, curses, zombies, and voodoo charms. While you may not care much about the pirates, some of the characters these men interact with will stay long after reading this novel.

On Stranger Tides is a light and fun read perfect for pirate stories lovers. The book reads like the Pirates of The Caribbean movie, and the action here is non-stop. With a complex plot, flawless writing, and relentless pace, the author takes the reader back to the 18th century, where John Chandagnac is trying to avenge his father’s death. Another brilliant scientist is trying to come to terms with the loss of his wife. The adventures John finds himself in are out of this world, and you cannot help but wonder how the story will end up for this puppeteer turned accountant.
