Bernard is a decorated police officer and has served in a variety of roles during his time in the service including as a patrolman, detective and narcotics officer. He is considered to be an expert witness in possession with intent to distribute controlled substances cases.
In an earlier life, Bernard was a child actor known as BJ Schaffer. He appeared in multiple television commercials, did a skit on Saturday Night Live, and was a regular cast member on the Nickelodeon series “Don’t Just Sit There.” At one point he was making $1800 per week more than his father made as a cop, but it eventually came to an end by the time that he was 14. He eventually settled into a more normal life until he went to the Police Academy and eventually become a cop. He is a police detective in the Philadelphia Suburban Region and also works as a writer.
The Thief of Light is the first book in the Santero and Rein series of books. Carrie Santero is a rookie cop with an obsession with serial killers. That obsession comes in handy when she’s put on the case of one of the sickest, most twisted psychopaths out there. The killer is an “omnikiller” who is unpredictable, unrelenting, and a straight up death machine. The body count is piling up and the pressure is on the police department to bring them in.
Carrie seeks out the help of Jacob Rein, a brilliant former detective who gone to the darkest corners of the killing mind. Jacob would love to forget the things that he knows, but those things are exactly what can help stop this killer. His knowledge will bring Carrie to a dark place, a place of no return, but it’s where she needs to go to save lives and bring a killer to justice.
The second book in the series is called An Unsettled Grave. This book sees Jacob Rein dealing with a case that has obsessed him and kept him awake for the past three decades. A missing girl that was never found and two dead cops. One of the cops was murdered while the other committed suicide and Rein has never found satisfactory answers. Rein’s protege Carrie Santero has an equal fascination with the twisted patterns of criminals and her latest case may have a tie to Rein’s old one. A small human foot has been found in the Pennsylvania woods and it leads her to Rein’s old case. She is not quite prepared for the secrets she is going to unravel as she digs into the new evidence and how it all connects to her mentor.
Bernard is also the author of Suburbia which is “the most dangerous police book ever written”. The book tells the story of Frank O’Ryan, a cop who got shot, as he is given a new assignment to work with the most disliked man in the precinct, Detective Vic Ajax who is not like other cops. The other cops in the department don’t like him and he doesn’t like them either. He works in a whole different department than them as he spends his time on the job hunting drug dealers and pedophiles. It’s a dark line of work and Frank soon learns that he will have to put his soul on the line to do good work and even then, he might not make it out. The job is worth it though if it manages to keep even one little girl from having to testify about what some monster did to her. They’ll resort to any means necessary to take down the scumbags.
Guns of Seneca 6 takes place in an intergalactic world filled with outlaws, gun-slingers, and native tribes. The characters inhabit the Seneca 6 mining settlement and used to live in peace before the murder of the Sheriff Sam Clayton. His son, Jem Clayton, fled the settlement and turned outlaw. Now, an intergalactic Marshal has crashed onto Seneca with the galaxy’s most dangerous criminal. The Harpe Gang is coming to Seneca 6 to free their man and all hell is breaking loose. Jem Clayton will return to town and with help from his father’s friend Doctor Royce Henry Halladay will make a stand against the invaders.
Schaffer wrote The Way of the Warrior that is equal parts a biography of police work and instructional guide. The book focuses on the core of the individual officer: the warrior spirit and discusses how to successfully uphold the law while not losing your mind in the process. The book is considered a must-read for anyone in law enforcement.
