Kim Slater not only lives but also works in Nottingham living with her partner together with their one year old daughter. While growing up, she developed an endless urge to read books especially those written by C.S. Lewis and Enid Blyton. As time went by, she slowly mastered story telling skills after penning macabre tales whose main aim purpose was to scare her younger brother.
As strange as it may sound, when kin turned 40, she decided to go back to the university and gained a first class honors degree coupled with an MA both in creative writing as well as in English. Back then she was still self employed while at the same time working tireless to manage education budgets within inner-city schools.
As strange as it may sound, kim takes her literary inspiration from everyday life. In fact her debut novel dubbed smart serves to bring a completely brilliant and unique voice into the world of children’s educative books.
In the past, she has on more than one occasion openly admitted that her favorite spot to write in is in bed and that she would never leave the house without her kindle.
Summary of SMART by Kim Slater
It starts after Kieran comes across a dead body by the river. Then later on comes to realize that this is the body of a local homeless man named Colin who police had assumed and concluded that he simply fell into the river and drowned yet in real sense they never really cared what had happened to him. As strange as it may sound, Kieran seems to care about this dead homeless man and adamantly sets out to try and solve the mystery behind his death.
Kieran starts off by questioning Colin’s fellow homeless folks focusing on establishing all of the people whom the deceased associated with while still alive. He sketches short note in his note book which he later on uses for reference while piecing together the evidence collected from those he successfully interviewed. Kieran however, never imagined that his personal horrible life at home could become entwined to this case involving a homeless man which he choose to pick and follow up.
Overall, smart, carefully and thoroughly tackles several issues which are considered to be relevant in the present society. Examples of the issues tackled by smart include issues such as domestic violence, trafficking of drugs, homelessness, autism and bullying just to mention a few. These issues collectively make smart a rather interesting book worthy of discussing with grownups. Interesting thing is: even though the books shows that there is hope, it equally features a rather troubling twist and turns which move people away from popular wordily books which already are in shelves at the moment. In case you are a normal reader word is, you stand to find smart, which by the way I one of the finest pieces of Kim a rather provoking read.
Simply put, the book is most ideal for reader aged 14 and above to say the least. Smart by Kim Slater serves as an uplifting story of how a young boy takes advantage of his art couple with unique mind to triumph in a world that does not understand him. Smart guarantees to captivate both: young and old readers.
It is equally worth noting that Kieran has trouble learning. Not much is also mentioned about his condition. However, he is quoted severally within the book by the author (Kim slater) saying: “I am a bit different compared to other people. The author also brings out echoes featured in her debut novel of mark haddon’s winning novel about a rather autistic boy shedding more light on the curious incident involving a dog.
Even though it is clearly evident that Kieran has troubles learning, he is bullied by his mother’s gangster partner who constantly knocks him around without cause while also calling him a retard. To make matters worse, his home life is equally rather grim. That aside, on a police map, the entire estate seems to be covered in little circles according to Kieran. Good thing is, Kim slater tries very much to bring out the details of smart in a rather readable manner. Critics however, insist that even though the novel is readable and that the plot is in order, the characters failed to feel authentic enough to make the book most interesting to read.
Kim features Jamie Oliver, Julia Donalson while she brings out Kieran to clearly share how she is able to work with an illustrator and still successfully come up with rather interesting pictures. Looking back at the manner in which Kim has brought out the story in smart and directed the unfolding of events, it is clearly evident that this book stands to be an awesome read for the young minds and an even interesting topic to debate/discuss between grownups. Even though the author at some point makes sure that Kieran is mistreated, she finally does an impressive job of heartwarming when he lets the readers know that Kieran is not the type to hold prejudices against other people which is unlike most normal people in the real world.
Reading smart by kim slater will definitely leave you with high hopes that your realization will extend way beyond Kieran and into everyday life. Altogether the book is truly an amazing read and equally an enticing debut. It makes you want to be aware of other’s needs while at the same time trying to pay close attention to life itself since it makes you understand the fact that you never know when you will gain access to information or skills which might help you or someone close that is counting on you. The writing style is pure genius hence expect a fun read throughout the book as you get to find out how Kieran is brave in spite of struggling with his own special needs proving how Good is able to help overcome any form of evil. In short, smart is a coming of age detective kind of novel that is characteristic of a big difference from the usual books.
