Passionate, driven, and more than just a little bit romantic. Author Donna Kauffman is all of these things- and a best seller, too.
Born on March 18, 1960, in Washington DC, Donna Kauffman has always had a love affair with the romance genre. Always an avid book reader, her child hood was spent poring over various types of fiction novels, but the genre to which she always seems to gravitate was romance.
“I think falling in love and beginning a sustaining relationship is one of the most powerful things we experience,” Donna emotes. Even at such a young age, Donna Kauffman’s heart beat for romantic reads. It was this lusty love for these scintillating stories of rich romance that propelled Donna to chase her literary dreams. She so loved reading of romance that becoming a romance writer was “a natural progression”.
A love of reading came naturally to Donna, and so did her desire to create stories of her own. Growing up in Maryland, she would spend hours writing long winded stories about the family’s pet gerbils, complete with full colour illustrations- books she is glad have been lost over the years.
“Think of the blackmail potential!” she laughs.
Gerbils aside, it was not until her early thirties that Donna Kauffman began to flirt with a career as a professional writer. Living in Virgina, she joined the Washington Romance Writers local writers group, an established branch of Romance Writers of America, and “knew immediately that I’d found My People”. She dove into the group with passion, quickly becoming a valued member. She volunteered as program coordinator, eventually became editor of the group’s newsletters, and even served as the writing group’s president. Working so closely with the Washington Romance Writers helped Donna to better her understanding of the cogs and wheels of the literary industry. The writers’ group helped her to build valuable connections with people already established within the industry of which she was hoping to become a part, while also bettering her understanding of writing. It is this “dual approach” that Donna Kauffman credits for the publication of her first very first novel: learning every last thing she could about creative writing in general, and also gaining significant insight about the industry she was trying to become a part of.
“Get to know a wide number of folks, from editors and agents, to librarians and booksellers, and numerous published authors who [have] already found success in this crazy business,” she advises, “a crucial step overlooked by aspiring writers, I think.”
Due to her knack for networking and rigour in righting her writing, Donna Kauffman’s first manuscript succeeded in winning her a three book contract- and she has been steadily contracted since.
“The first to hear the news were my two young sons,” Donna remembers. “I’d stuck [them] in a playpen and run into the bathroom so I could take ‘the call’ without Barney and Sesame Street blaring in the background. Of course, they were more interested in telling me our new puppy had peed on the carpet,” she laughs.
With over fifty published books under her belt, a gig moonlighting as a TV columnist, and a Rita Award for her novel ‘The Charm Storm’, this USA Today Best Seller is certainly no virgin to success. From The Legend MacKinnon all the way to Sandpiper Island, Donna Kauffman spins spicy tales of attraction and seduction that keep on readers’ first string. Ms. Kauffman proves just as married to her work as are her readers. She has been going steady with with “steadily writing love stories” for the past twenty years, and has no plans of ending this chapter any time soon.
“I hope I’m not enough at the half way point yet!” Donna admits.
Maybe that is because she is still as enamoured with her casts of characters as they are with each other. When she stops and considers the many characters she mind has modeled over the twenty years she has spent putting pen to paper,”I just feel like I get to live in one mammoth extended family filled with a lot of people I adore and love. They’re all dear to me,” she expresses. It is undoubtedly this familial fondness of her characters that helps make them, and her work, so irresistible.
Donna Kauffman is known as more than just a Best Selling Author. To her fans, she is the Queen of the Giveaways. On her web site, Ms. Kauffman hosts a slew of fun contests and polls that offer her faithful fans a chance to participate in the worlds she creates.
“It’s all rather anonymous as I don’t get to see readers enjoying the results of all my work,” Donna laments. Hosting contests gives her a way to bring readers more on board. “I’m proud to share with my readers,” she says. “I love getting feedback.”
THE CUPCAKE CLUB SERIES
Donna Kauffman is well loved for all her works, but her fans are particularly sweet on the Cupcake Club Series. So far, the series includes four books: Sugar Rush, Sweet Stuff, Babycakes, and Honey Pie. The books follow the stories of four women on Sugarberry Island, and the baking and love making their lives include. Each book cooks up an entirely different tale than the one before it, so that readers are free to devour the Cupcake Club Series’ sweet treats in whatever order they please.
Sugar Rush finds gifted baker Leilani Trusdale leaving the Big Apple behind for a more humble homestead on Sugarberry Island. Yet when chef Baxter Dunne, who puts the “hot” in Chef Hot Cakes, decides to film his famous TV show inside of Leilani’s cupcakery, things get a little spicier than expected- particularly since this is the man Leilani has been craving since he taught her in pastry school! Could Dunne be the secret ingredient to unlock the recipe of Leilani’s life time happiness? One thing is for sure- the romance of Baxter and Leilani is sure to have you as hot and hyped as a sugar rush!
Sweet Stuff follows Chicago native Riley Brown as she makes the move from the big city to the small Sugarberry Island. Riley falls hard for island life and her cupcakery job- and for bad boy Quinn Brannigan, too. Gorgeous and brash, Riley finds the Southern writer sweeter than any cupcake she could ever create. Her girl friends are egging her on, but it is the succulent Quinn who must learn the taste of love before this relationship is ready to serve.
It was during the writing of this series that author Donna Kauffman got busy in the kitchen. In the name of research, she has become a bona fide baker- you can get a taste of her cupcakes by checking out the recipe index on her blog. Still, for all her creative talents, Donna Kauffman has her off days, too: try as she might, the romance writer seems to keep ending up “covered in powdered sugar…greeting the local firemen at her door (again).”
