Troy Denning otherwise known by his pseudonym Richard Awlinson is a science fiction and fantasy author and former game designer. While he started out as a game designer, once he published “Waterdeep” the New York Times bestselling novel in 1989, he became a prolific author and now has more than twenty novels to his name. Denning was bought up in Idaho Springs, Colorado and from a very young age was a voracious reader of fantasy and science fiction. As a fourteen-year-old, he would spend much of his time writing his fiction in spiral-bound notebooks that he began querying and getting rejection slips for. By the time he turned eighteen, he had a rejection with a handwritten note signed by Ben Bova. That the editor had bothered to write back to him was encouraging and he continued writing even as he went to Beloit College and played college football. His first published work was “The Omega Rebellion” that he wrote in collaboration with Keith Laumer in 1987. Since then he has written a ton of novels in the “Dungeons and Dragons” settings of Forgotten Realms and Dark Sun. He has also written several novels in the expanded Star Wars Universe and also posts on the Stars Wars forums and on theforce.net under the alias TailOne. Denning lives with his wife Andria in Wisconsin and when he is not writing spends a lot of his time in the outdoors and practicing martial arts.

Denning went to work for the American game publishing company TSR in 1981. He started out as a game designer but was soon managing the designers before he decided that he wanted to have a crack at book writing and moved to the book department. He quit his job at TSR and cofounded the Pacesetter gaming company, where he is credited with developing several blockbuster games including “Chill: Black Morn Manor” in 1985. His company was acquired by Mayfair and he spent a few years at the company before he decided to become a freelancer. He had always wanted to become an author but it was not until his 1989 bestselling novel “Waterdeep” that the dream became a reality. It was also at this time that he adopted the pseudonym Richard Awlinson, which was something of an inside joke he had with fellow author Scott Ciencin. He was still writing games and in 1989 he was back at RSR this time creating the popular Dark Sun setting that he would use in his later novels. Together with fellow designers such as Brom, they managed to create one of the most iconic worlds with super-strong characters, weird creatures, and settings.

In 1991, Troy Denning got back into writing and between 1991 and 1993 penned the novels of the “Prism Pentad” series and between 1994 and 1995 he penned the novels of the “Twilight Giants” trilogy on the Forgotten Realms world. In 1996, he published his best work yet in “Pages of Pain,” which he asserts forced him to go really in-depth into his themes as compared to his other works. He would later continue the story of Lady of Pain, the lead in the novel in subsequent novels such as “Crucible: The Trial of Cyric the Mad” and “Prince of Lies” that he wrote alongside James Lowder. His other notable works include “The Sentinel for The Sundering” and “Dragonwall and The Parched Sea.” He has also written several titles in the expanded Star Wars universe including the last novel of the Legacy of the Force series “Invincible” in 2008. He was also involved in the writing of the “Dark Nest Trilogy” and three novels of the “Fate of the Jedi” series.

Troy Denning’s “The Verdant Passage” is an easy and quick read about Tyr, a city under the rule of King Kalak who is assisted by the Templar friends. Given that he is such a tyrannical leader, “The Veiled Alliance,” an underground movement has been plotting to assassinate him. After Tithian his childhood friend confiscates his slaves intending to use them in building some projects by the High Templar and the King, Agis knows he has to do something. He comes from a long line of proud men of the house Asticles and he rallies the Senate to oppose the latest decree by the king. He happens to buys Sadira, a slave girl who belongs to a secret society he knew nothing about. After she is freed by Agis, she offers to support the Veiled Alliance in the plan to overthrow the evil king. Sadira is charged with recruiting a gladiator named Rikus that the coup plotters believe would be instrumental in their cause. Once the team is complete, they set off on the quest to find the elusive “Heartwood Spear,” that the oracle says needs to be procured if they are to get rid of the tyrant. After the initial antagonism between the gladiator and the high-born Agis, the team gets along famously. The decision is made to kill the king during the celebration for the completion of the king’s Ziggurat. The king intends to hold the biggest gladiatorial games ever as he moves on with plans to transform himself into a dragon.

“The Crimson Legion” by Troy Denning is set in the aftermath of the declaration of freedom by the Tithians following the assassination of King Kalak. The city of Tyr had appointed Rikus the gladiator to lead its forces and now he has to head out to protect the realm. He is fighting the city of Urik that has Hamanu the Lion King at the head of its army. The lead protagonist of the novel is Rikus alongside his partner and lover from the gladiatorial arena Neeva. Sadira and Agis make brief appearances but for the most part, they stay in Tyr, where they are keeping an eye on the newly appointed king, Tythian. In addition to the Lion King, the kingdom of Urik has the master of the Way and noble man Maenu. He also heads the House of Lubar that happens to be the household where Rikus spent much of his childhood as a slave. The enemy forces intend to take over the abundant iron mines that belong to Tyr, since the commodity is rare in their homeland. Most of the story is about the battles between the two armies which ultimately ends in a standoff outside Urik.

Troy Denning’s “The Amber Enchantress” is the story of The Dragon of Athas named Borys that had been brought forth by magic and found sustenance in the agony of the doomed. For a millennium, he has been terrorizing the empty wastes in Athas moving from one city to another looking to levy from every one of them a thousand slaves. But he now has to deal with the challenge of Sadira, a winsome enchantress who is determined to take him down. But first, she needs to get to a forgotten citadel known as the Pristine Tower that has never stopped smoldering ever since it brought forth the Dragon via its magic. Faenaeyon the man who had left her in slavery is now her only hope in the fight against the dragon. She needs to find a way to forgive him or if not, she is going to fall victim to the darkness residing in the Pristine Tower.
