Sonya Lalli
Sonya Lalli is a writer of Indian heritage. She studied law at Columbia University and in her hometown of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She finished an MA in Creative Writing and Publishing at City, University of London in the year 2015.

Sonya enjoys to travel, piano practice yoga, reading, and cook, and she has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. She lives with her husband in the city of Toronto and works as a journalist at a legal magazine in London.

Sonya had stopped writing altogether when she began studying and working in law, and for a bit she even quit reading for pleasure. Living in New York for a bit, after living in Saskatoon her entire life. She met people from all around the world and had all kinds of new experiences that opened her eyes. It inspired her and she began making more time to write.

While Sonya was in the very beginnings of coming up with the story that later became “The Matchmaker’s List”, she began rethinking her career path. She wavered for some time, but she was propelled by a telephone conversation she had with an author named Kathleen Grissom, author of “The Kitchen House”.

In the biography section of the book, Sonya realized that Kathleen was from Saskatchewan. She doesn’t know why, but she emailed her, telling her just how much she enjoyed the book and admired Kathleen, and she was having a tough time with figuring what to do. Kathleen emailed right back and called her, and Sonya has no idea what she said, but it was during this conversation she decided she would go for it. Months later, she found herself in London and enrolled herself in an MA course in creative writing and publishing.

Beginning again and attempting to write a novel was the easiest and most challenging thing she has ever done. It was a leap for her but she was certain deep down that she had a story inside of her that wouldn’t leave her alone until she tried to tell it.

Through writing the novel, she learned that there wasn’t any such thing as writer’s block. She could only afford time to write when she was really inspired, so everything flowed naturally and easily.

She also learned how to write when her creative juices were totally tapped out. When she gets stuck, she will stop what she is doing and move onto some other scene or chapter, work on some character development or map out some of the subplots in a notebook to try and get her mind stimulated. Other times, she will just try to jot down a brief synopsis of what she would like to happen in a certain chapter.

Sonya also has to capitalize on the moments she feels creative. She will be sitting around the dinner table with her family laughing about something, and then all of a sudden, she will dart right across the room to grab her notebook to jot an idea or anecdote down. She will forget it immediately if she doesn’t do it that way.

While writing her first novel, she never allowed herself ther time to consider what could happen when she finished it. She had a book about becoming a published author, which she bought early on in the process, and she wasted some time flipping through it. By the end, she just had to hide it in her closet, vowing to not even open the book up until she was ready to look for a publisher and an agent. She was motivated to publish her novel, but she still did need to get the novel written, first.

While writing the novel, she was doing her MA and working a part-time job, and her schedule was rather sporadic and never had a set routine. Whenever she had free time to write between her shifts and classes, she used the SelfControl app on her computer that blocked out websites that only distracted her, like Facebook and Twitter.

Now that she works full time, she attempts writing one to two evenings during the week and one day on the weekend, however she still doesn’t have a totally predictable schedule. Whenever she is able to spare some time all by herself to write, she just tries and makes the most of it.

Her debut novel, called “The Arrangement”, was released in the year 2017. Sonya writes romance novels.

“The Arrangement” is the first stand alone novel and was released in the year 2017. A traditional, meddlesome grandma plus a devoted modern girl equals a heartwarming multicultural romantic comedy that is about finding love where you will least expect it.

Raina Anand might have finally given in to her family’s pressure and agreed to allow her grandma to play matchmaker. That does not mean she has to like it, or that she must play by the rules. Nani always took Raina’s side after she attempted to push beyond the traditional expectations of their tight-knit Indian-immigrant community. However, then she begins ambushing Raina with a full list of suitable bachelors. Could it be too much to ask for just a little bit of space? Besides, what Nani is unaware of won’t really hurt her.

While Raina’s life begins to spiral into a parade of Nani-approved bachelors and disastrous blind dates, she has to figure out a way out of this modern-day arranged-marriage trap without shattering all of her beloved grandma’s dreams.

“Grown-Up Pose” is the second stand alone novel and was released in the year 2020. A modern look at what happens for a young lady when dating, tradition, and independent collide.

Adulting should not really be this hard. Especially when you are in your thirties. Having been pressured by her tight-knit community to get married at a young age to Anu Desai, her first serious boyfriend, is now on her own again and feels as though she is starting over from the beginning.

Anu does not have time to begin again. Telling her parents that she was separating from her husband was the toughest thing she ever done and she still has to deal with the fallout. She has her young daughter she has to support. She also invests all of her savings into running her own yoga studio, with the feelings of irresponsibility send Anu reeling. She is going to be forced to look inside herself to learn what she actually wants.
