William Bernhardt is an American writer best known for his many thriller/mystery/suspense works chief amongst which is the considerably popular Ben Kincaid series.

Biography

William Bernhardt was once named the master of courtroom drama, primarily because of the success of his most popular series of books, revolving around the idealistic attorney Ben Kincaid.

Compared to people like John Mortimer and P.G Wodehouse, Bernhardt has earned the respect of a great many readers and critics the world over, winning over audiences with the realism he injects into the legal situations that appear in his book, this complimented by the numerous twists and breathtaking pace.

The author has been known to examine those most trending issues of the nation, the sorts of matters that eventually rise to prominence in American Society. The heights William has managed to climb as an author are, perhaps, not that surprising.

After all, William Bernhardt once boasted a successful career as a lawyer; acquiring his law degree from the University of Oklahoma, William spent nine years under the auspices of a large firm as a trial lawyer, during which time he was recognized on several occasions, not only for his competence in court but the pro bono work he did, assisting the helpless and guiding young minds interested in pursuing law.

With accolades including his name in barrister magazine as one of the best 20 young lawyers in the country as well as a special award for his outstanding service from the Oklahoma Bar Association, William Bernhardt is also one of America’s most in-demand writing instructors. Hosting an annual writing work shop as well as various smaller group seminars, products of William’s tutelage include Aprilynne Pike (New York Times bestseller) and Sarah Rees Brennan (UK national bestseller) along with numerous other successful authors such as Rick Stiller, Lara Wells, Greg Fields, Audrey Streetman, Christian Archer, Rick Ludwig and Paul Dalzell to mention but a few.

Beyond merely teaching and writing, William Bernhardt also founded the HAWK publishing group in 1999; while publishing noteworthy works by novelists such as N. Scott Momaday, beyond merely bringing the biggest names to book stores, William’s intention for HAWK lay in providing an avenue through which unpublished authors could get their voices out. It is for this reason why most of the works published by HAWK have been first time novels.

Despite successes like P.C Cast’s ‘House of Night’ series, William closed HAWK in 2009.

William Bernhardt has proven his competency as a creative individual through his various accomplishments and the roles he has played over the years, these including lyricist, music writer, pianist and a crossword puzzle creator.

William has also proven his adventurous side several times over, showing an interest in and pursuing scuba diving, surfing, trekking and paragliding in some dangerous places to mention but a few.

While known primarily for his legal fictional works, William Bernhardt’s writing successes extend beyond the Ben Kincaid series, with novels like ‘The Code of Buddyhood’ tackling coming of age stories about life and difficult friendships.

William’s name is hardly new to the media, Bernhardt having made a habit out of appearing on programs and Networks such as CNN, CNBC, The Today Show and Nightline to mention but a few.

His books having sold more than ten million copies, William Bernhardt can boast of having won the Oklahoma Book Award an astounding 14 times, with additional writing accolades including the Southern Writers Guild’s Gold Medal Award, the H. Louise Cobb Distinguished Author Award and the career achievement award to mention but a few.

William’s non-fiction novel ‘Nemesis: The Final Case of Eliot Ness’ is currently under production as a miniseries. The novel, which delves into the world of the ‘Mad Butcher of Cleveland’-arguably considered to be America’s first serial killer-, took William two years to research.

William’s wife, Lara Bernhardt, is also a writer as well as an audio book narrator.

Primary Justice

Ben Kincaid has just begun his first day as an associate; he has every intention of climbing the ladder to partnership at Raven, Tucker and Tubb. But first he must overcome a difficult hurdle. Assigned to what seems like little more than grunt work, Ben takes to helping one of the firm’s biggest clients with all the gusto he can muster, especially after he meets Emily, the Korsakov’s Syndrome patient that Jonathan and Bertha Adams want to adopt.

Ben is going about getting the necessary paperwork in order when a phone call informs him of Jonathan’s death, whose body had been discovered in an alleyway, hacked to pieces. Unable to ignore the possibility that Jonathan’s untimely demise might be connected to the girl, Emily, who cannot form new memories, Ben’s investigation forces him down a chilling path.

Many readers have been known to express ambivalent opinions about the first book in the Ben Kincaid series. Primary Justice brings to the table all the elements that have made William Bernhardt such a success, with a story that is fast paced and twists that can be shocking.

The novel, however, reads just like many authors’ first books, with many readers referring to the writing as sophomoric, others complaining somewhat about how all the threads, questions and plots where tied up a little too conveniently and perfectly. These complaints do not completely ruin Primary Justice, which is none the less intriguing and considerably entertaining.

Blind Justice

Ben Kincaid is finally out of the corporate life; striking out on his own, the lawyer has finally been afforded the opportunity to observe and engage with the seamy side of the law. There is little glamour or sophistication out in the cold and neither are there any grand rewards to be reaped, not for defending the losers that keep knocking on his door.

Things take a new turn when Ben’s friend is framed for murder. Kincaid will have to thrust himself into the arena of hardball litigation once more. And in the face of a judge that despises his guts, Ben Kincaid knows that his loss is more or less guaranteed.

The second book in the Ben Kincaid series is a captivating read; many readers have praised the novel for finally picking up the slack and improving upon the failures of the first novel, William presenting a story with numerous interesting characters. The coincidences do little to ruin the pace, which is complimented by the freshness of William Bernhardt’s writing.
