Sam Lloyd is an English author and illustrator best known for creating the unique character of Mr. Pusskins and the Whoops-A-Daisy-World series. Her character Mr. Pusskins is a cosseted cat, who is much-loved by his owner Emily, but he is not grateful and is always dreaming of finding excitement away from his owner’s attention and the comfortable life that Emily has giving him. To put it bluntly, Mr. Pusskins is a spoiled cat and is always getting himself into naughty fun that eventually turns bad for him. The first book with Mr. Pusskins was the winner of the 2006 Booktrust Early Years Award for Best Pre-School Book, the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, and was also shortlisted for the V & A Illustration Award.

Sam Lloyd studied at Brighton University where she gained a BA Hons in Illustration. She has used her degree to write and illustrate many popular and successful books for children. Sam also does a lot of voluntary work with children, painting large murals and working on art projects with children at a local school. For fun, Sam enjoys yoga, swimming, camping and other outdoorsy things like that. Some of her other passions include swimming in the Brighton Sea and gardening.

When she is not working on her children’s books, Sam loves to attend music festivals with her monster mate puppets. She has also done children’s events with Templar at Glastonbury and Camp Bestival. Lloyd enjoys traveling the world and always manages to bring her backpack and her sketchbook so that no matter she is in the world, she can write down book ideas as she goes.

Mr. Pusskins is definitely based off some real life as Sam Lloyd owns what she calls a “ginormous” ginger cat along with her son Ozzy. The family lives in Brighton where she works and writes. Lloyd is also the author of Happy Dog, Sad Dog which won the Sainsbury’s Baby Book Award in 2003.

Those are not the only award that Sam Lloyd has won for her writing. Her books have won many awards and being recognized across the book industry. Some of the awards that Sam Lloyd’s books have won include the BookTrust Pre-School Award 2006, the V&A Illustration Award, the Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2009, the Richard & Judy Best Children’s Book 2006 and the Sheffield Baby Book Award 2009. Her books have been translated into over 15 languages.

Sam Lloyd’s breakout was probably Calm Down, Boris!. Lloyd was somewhat broke at the time and living in a small flat with her boyfriend. She was doing cleaning jobs to help pay the bills as she had not yet found success as an author or illustrator. She was looking for inspiration and decided to go through her basket of fabrics. She founds some scraps of fabric that she found interesting and started cutting and stitching. After some time, Boris was born and several of his monstery mates as well. She left it at that, but a note from her flatmate that said “I LOVE THESE MADAM!” inspired her to continue on with them.

She packed up the monstery mates and took them to the team at Templar to help her turn the monster into books. Those pieces of fabrics that she found in her basket would eventually lead to her winning the Richard and Judy children’s book award, getting her book on television. From there she was making stops at Glastonbury and the Edinburgh Festival, and selling more and more. No longer did Lloyd have to be a cleaning lady, she was now a proper writer and she has a basket of fabric to thank for it.

Mr. Pusskins: A Pet’s Tale is the world’s introduction to the grumpiest, sassiest, and most loveable cat by the name of Mr. Pusskins. His owner, Emily, simply adores him and does whatever it takes to make his life great for him. Despite this, Mr. Pusskins is always fighting againstt it. He doesn’t want the snuggles or the bedtime stories or the mouse games. Mr. Pusskins has it in his mind that he wants adventure and he sets out to find some. However, it’s a classic tale of “be careful what you wish for” and as soon as Mr. Pusskins ventures from home – he realizes just how much he misses Emily and wants to get back to her, and her cuddles.

Mr. Pusskins returned in Mr. Pusskins: Best in Show. This book features Mr. Pusskins in a cat show and he becomes smitten with the “best in show” prize. He’ll do anything to get that trophy and won’t let anyone stand in his way, espeically the double-crossing poodle, Madame Fifi Fu-Fu.

Lloyd also wrote What’s In Your Tummy, Mummy? which is a unique book designed to teach young kids what is going on when their mom decides to have another baby. The book sees a young boy trying to figure out what is going on with his mom’s tummy and what’s inside it. The book features multiple flaps with different animals under them as what the boy thinks is inside the tummy. In the end, the mother delivers a baby and the boy is able to learn about the new addition to the family. A perfect book for expecting mothers who have a young toddler at the house.

The book that really put Lloyd on the map was Calm Down, Boris!. This book introduces us to the monster Boris who is a big, loud, orange haired monster scares all of the other little monsters away with his over enthusiasm and love of kissing. The funny premise of a scary monster who loves kissing is great for kids as Boris loves kissing so much that he’ll kiss anything, even big scary dogs. Boris becomes a hero in the end when he saves the day for all the monsters and suddenly kissing becomes much more popular. The book has a Boris puppet attached which nursery children will love interacting with.
