February 2020: Books I Read Last Month

Well January ended up being a month where I read a lot – but it wasn’t what I actually WANTED to read.
There were a lot of new books out by authors who I like plus there are new authors I’ve discovered recently where I wanted to read more of them.
Alas I fell into a trap of re-reading books that I have re-read multiple times.
First the new books.
My mum recommended the author Gillian McAllister to me. I had one of her books on my Kindle so I read that one then I read another.
Everything but the Truth by Gillian McAllister: A standalone thriller and the first one I have read by Gillian. It’s about 2 people who are together and have a baby but aren’t telling each other a big secret. This started off well with mystery upon mystery but it all petered out at the end. It was an enjoyable enough story but a disappointing ending. Really lacking that one last twist. I think I’d give Gillian another try though.
Anything You Do Say by Gillian McAllister: And so I DID give Gillian another try. This one is about someone making a decision after they push a man down stairs and potentially kill him – do they reveal what happened by calling the police, or do they cover it up and just run away to leave the body to be found by others? It then covers both versions of events. While it’s a neat concept (although not unique) I found it stopped me from being invested in the story. It didn’t help that the protagonist was just an awful person. I read it quite fast but never got invested in it.
Then I fell into the Grisham Trap.
You know how you are reading one thing on Wikipedia, and that leads you to another and another and next thing you know you have about 30 tabs open? I’m the same way with Grisham and his old books.
All it will take is one book and I am hooked on Grisham again. Like a cigarette smoker. Just can’t get enough.
We watched the movie The Runaway Jury based on the book of the same name. It’s one of my favourite books that I have read probably at least 10 times and also a movie I’ve watched multiple times. One of Gene Hackmans last roles which makes it that much better.
After watching it I felt it had been too much time since I last read those books so I read The Runaway Jury.
Then The Partner.
Then The Firm.
And on and on and on.
I ended up reading 8 Grisham books back to back. Say what you will about his latest books but man 90s Grisham was something special. I’d actually extend that to 2003 as The King of Torts is also one of my favourites.
So yeah that was my month. While I am sad I didn’t get to read much new stuff I thoroughly enjoyed the Grisham binge and can’t wait to do it again in a couple of years. It’s motivated me to read the new ones by him that I’ve kind of put off. Haven’t read any of his books since Rogue Lawyer actually (which was really good).

Love this site. I’m a slow reader but I did finish James Lee Burke – Robichaeux, Brad Thor – Athena Project and Michael Connelly – Wrong Side of Goodbye this month. I’m way behind on Thor and Connelly but hope to catch up within the year.
December/January: Grisham – The Guardians. Bernard Cornwell – Sword of Kings, War of the Wolf. James Lee Burke – In the Electric Mist With the Confederate Dead, Cimarron Rose, Swan Peak. T. Jefferson Parker – LA Outlaws, The Renegades. Conn Iggulden – The Falcon of Sparta. Superb…ALL of them. I consider myself a very fussy reader. I would love to be able to write like any of these guys.
