Author Brian Hodge has been praised by the likes of Peter Straub for his spectacularly unflinching gifts. He has won the International Horror Guild Award for best short fiction, and has also been nominated for other awards.
Before he had even started school or knew the alphabet, he liked scribbling on scraps of wood, his dad did a lot of woodworking, and attach these impromptu signs to various trees. It was in an apparent effort to communicate anything to people who might have come along later.
His grandmother is the best off-the-top-of-her-head storyteller that he ever expects to know. When he was little, he would spend a lot of weeks during the summer and weekends with her. Brian would also go with her on trips she would take to the senior center, where she played bumper pool and cards.
Besides writing, Brian also likes photography, music, and sound design, as well as reading all kinds of different things. Brian likes everything there is about organic gardening except for the thieving squirrels, and he trains in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Krav Maga, neither of which, however, are any use against the squirrels that try stealing his corn.
Brian’s debut novel, called “Dark Advent” was released in the year 1988. His work is from the genres of science fiction and horror.
“Dark Advent” is the first stand alone novel and was released in the year 1988. A lot like a biblical pestilence, there is a plague that leaves just a handful of survivors around to face the savage new world.
In the deserted department store out in the Midwest, just a few people band together, but just outside their temporary safe haven, there is an insidious evil stirring.
Readers feel that Hodge’s work should be more widely read, and this novel is a reason why. Hodge delivers a plot that is well-crafted and a strong narrative. The conclusion is outstanding, with an epic battle happening between evil and good. Any time the topic of great post apocalyptic horror novels comes up, this one should be a novel that comes up.
“Oasis” is the second stand alone novel and was released in the year 1988. A golden time. This is what Chris Anderson, Aaron (Chris’ brother), and their buddies expected of that final summer. Lazy, freedom, and days filled with pleasure before all the responsibilities of career and college. An idyll in a newly found private place located on the shores of three tiny lakes.
Tri-Lakes is not an oasis. A millennium ago it became the focal point of a powerful evil force, and the remains of an ancient Viking blood feud.
Hatred is the thing’s source. It draws power from blood. Only sacrifice is able to banish it for good.
The book is entertaining and exciting; it will even keep you guessing the entire way through. Each of the characters is sympathetic, likable, and believable. Once completing this one, readers are eager to pick up more by Brian Hodge, who should be a bigger name within the horror genre.
“Nightlife” is the third stand alone novel and was released in the year 1991. A drug lord steals a mysterious green powder called skullflush from a fierce Venezuelan mountain people. It wreaks havoc on all of its abusers. Justin Gray, who is an ex-small time dealer in St. Louis shows up in Tampa, Florida in order to begin a new life. His first night in the town his friend Erik takes him out to a disco, and he tries just a mild hit of skullflush.
One of Erik’s other buddies, named Trent, takes a much larger dose and gets transformed into a ravenous beast. He almost devours four people before killing himself. Tony Mendoza, a drug dealer in Tampa, turns onto a human version of his piranha after sampling the drug, starts hunting for Justin, who is the only witness to what happened in the disco that night.
Tony himself is sought after by the Kerebawa, a Yanomamo warrior, who comes to America to get the skullflush back and avenge its being stolen before too many of the wrong people snort it.
The imagination and creativity in the idea of this book is original as well as outstanding, and the story turns into something that some readers were not expecting it to. These characters are complex and realistic in this novel, especially Kerebawa.
“Deathgrip” is the fourth stand alone novel and was released in the year 1992. His touch is able to either harm or heal, and his fate is a solitary one. His agony belongs to all of us.
He was born on November 22, 1963, a day of pain. He also came of age in agony: that one instant of tragedy when rock and roll deejay Paul Handler found the inexplicable power within his own hands.
His power is able to make those that are wounded whole once more, and the power to heal the sick and make the lame able to walk. This is a power that is going to sap his soul and thrust him into a world of a famous faith healer. This power can turn to rage, even murder. This is a gift that makes Paul Handler a breathing and living human sacrifice.
For millennia, a secret cabal has been guarding the lineage that Paul is the heir to. Scapegoats that are forced to bear all of humanity’s anguish on themselves. While the cabal tries hunting for him, and one guy looks to destroy him, Paul makes a frightening and lonely journey to the center of his identity and his own destiny. To all the pain that his soul is able to bear, to every bit of redemption he is able to give, and the freedom that is death.
Hodge is a brilliant writer, and he takes this story in a direction that most were not expecting it to go in. He does a fantastic job of blending all of the possible stories into a single story with a lot more punch. These are some nuanced and well written characters.
