Pam Uphoff

Pam Uphoff is the author of the science fiction series, Wine of the Gods. She also has a good number of novels and novellas to her name. Pam, who grew up in California, is the true definition of a horse girl, and her love for dogs and horses is evident throughout her writing. Her other passion is writing, and she started writing long before she thought about sharing her works with the world.

Pam took the less traditional approach to publish when she decided to self-publish. While this may mean that she does not feature anywhere in the list of published authors, she has been able to put a good number of her books out there. She decided to self-publish after waiting too long to hear from publishers. Pam figured that the long wait could prevent her from sharing all the unpublished stories she had been piling for years.

Outcasts and Gods

The Outcasts and Gods is the first book in Wine of the Gods series by Pam Uphoff. Genetic engineering was first done to cure a genetic disease, but the engineers decided to go one step further. Once the disease was cured successfully, the best natural traits were selected, resulting in genetically improved children. The children looked and acted like others throughout their childhoods; their characters began to emerge once they hit teenhood.

At the start, these genetically improved children are seized from their parents. The engineering company takes them through rigorous training to strengthen their traits. The goal is to use them to serve different users’ needs. Since their genes are altered, the government allows its users to treat them as property. While the world calls the gods because of their unique abilities, to their users, they are mere slaves.

Wolfgang Oldham, the main character in this series, is one of the genetically modified children. He was barely 16 when a genetic engineering company claimed him. He managed to escape and was free for another three years before being arrested and taken back to the genetic engineering company where he trained with others like him. Wolfgang is always a few steps ahead of his team and owners. He is one adventurous young man, and while his mischief has cost his freedom once, he is hell-bent on trying new things with every passing day.

The Outcasts and God’s heroes are genetically-engineered teens and young adults. The company responsible for engineering treats them as slaves who have to follow their instructions to the letter. However, the heroes aren’t happy with how everyone else treats them, and there are plans to take action and teach the users a lesson. Their users have no idea that the training these children went through not only made them useful but also dangerous. As they grew, their abilities became more refined as their powers increased.

The fun in the story all starts when the children discover that they can close and open doors using telekinesis. They also have the power to enter other dimensions on other planets. Will they be able to escape from their masters and go to a place with minimal if any restrictions?
Will the fact that they have powers the rest of humanity doesn’t have put them at an advantage?

Outcasts and Gods is fast-paced from start to finish. The main character Wolfgang is lovable, and the rest of the cast lets the reader into a different era where their genetic make-up no longer limits humans. If you are a fan of science fiction writing, this book will introduce you to a world where parents can determine the type of children they want to have in the future.

Exiles and Gods

Exiles and Gods is the second book in the Wine of God’s series. This book is made up of three short stories that cover the exiles, the Gods, and disasters. The stories here maintain the same theme, but readers get to meet new main characters while the key characters in the Outcasts and Gods book stay in the background. The fact that the book is made up of three stories make it easy for readers to connect the dots starting from the time the genetically engineered individuals are exiled from Earth to their lives in the parallel planets hundreds of years later.

We meet Chris Dunmeyer, a smart, good-looking, and athletic high school student. Chris is shocked when test results show that he is genetically engineered. Things get worse when they banish Chris from participating in sports, and his peers shun him because they see him as a techno monster, and they want him gone from their planet.

Following the discovery of the parallel world technology, Chris and other genetically engineered individuals are banished from Earth. They find the parallel Earth challenging as there are hungry wildlife and prejudices to deal with. The gods are also going through social and genetic changes, and the results of every genetic improvement are nothing short of startling. Despite all the challenges, the gods are finally free to explore and push their abilities away from their users.

The Exiles and Gods story is set a few hundred years into the future. The book covers everything from the first day in the alternative Earth to the happenings over 300 years later. You get to read about how politics and war where celestial weaponry is used to shape the lives of those living in the alternative Earth. Towards the end, there are thieves and disasters involved, and the jury is still out on whether the gods can use the skills they have acquired in over three centuries to save themselves from an indifferent universe.

The alternative Earth, as described in the book, is similar to our planet, making it easy for readers to identify the similarities and differences between the two worlds. The characters are also refreshing, not to mention the fact that their struggles make them more human and easy to relate. All the details add up to an exciting study comprising of both human and superhuman nature and the possibilities offered by science and technological advancement.

Great series. A fun and interesting read. After 56 books I still look forward to the next one.
