Author Stephen Laws was born in the year 1952 in Newcastle upon Tyne. He has three kids and is married and still works and lives in his birthplace.
His debut novel, “Ghost Train” was released in the year 1985. Stephen’s work is from the horror genre. “The Midnight Man”, which is a collection of his short stories, was released in the year 1985. He wrote and starred in “The Secret”, a short horror movie.
His short fiction has been published in anthologies such as: “Northern Chills”, “The Mammoth Book of Best New Horror Volume Nine”, “Heaven Sent”, “Dancing With the Dark”, and “Scare Care”.
He has been nominated three times for Best Novel by the British Fantasy Society, for “Daemonic”, “Somewhere South of Midnight”, and “Chasm”, in 1995, 1997, and 1998, respectively. In 1998, he was nominated for a fourth award by the British Fantasy Society for Best Short Story for “The Song My Sister Sang”.
“Ghost Train” is the first stand alone novel, which was released in the year 1985. There is something lethal that stalks the corridors of the King’s Cross train, killing passengers. Mark Davies, a commuter, was attacked and thrown off the train. Now he has to team up with Les Chadderton, who is obsessed with the Ghost Train and ex cop. All before the predator disembarks for wilder pastures.
Stephen Laws has a rather wild imagination and has the ability to kill off characters in gruesome ways. Readers found themselves rooting for the main characters, and fearing the villain. It was thrilling, shocking, and able to scare in the best of ways. The book is old school horror with demonic forces, possession, and mystery to be solved with a finale of evil versus good.
“Spectre” is the second stand alone novel, which was released in the year 1986. Six boys and just a girl, the inseparable Byker Chapter, all growing up together in the back streets of Newcastle. Memories are all Richard Eden has left, and a treasured photograph.
But inexplicably and suddenly, the images of his buddies begin to fade, and as they disappear, his buddies are found mutilated and dead. There is something stalking the Chapter, taking them out one by one. It is connected to their past, and the girl that they used to know.
Stephen Laws tells his stories at a fast pace and is able to scare his readers pretty bad in this. The creepy atmosphere is palpable on each and every page and there is a well done showdown at the end of the story. Fans found this one hooks you early and never lets go. This one proves that Stephen Laws is a master of this genre.
“The Wyrm” is the third stand alone novel, which was released in the year 1987. Michael Lambton is running away from some personal demons that are still haunting his nightmares. He writes psychological thrillers, and has bought a country estate with the hopes of starting fresh and trying to break his writer’s block. He quickly falls in love with Christy, a young waitress, and the only one in the entire town that doesn’t just instinctively distrust him.
Christy’s dad, however, is thought to be the town’s madman. The city council calls for the gallows pole in the town center to be taken out in order for new construction to commence. He goes berserk, wielding a shotgun against the bulldozers.
It turns out that there is actually a method to this man’s madness, under the gallows is an ancient evil, one that comes to life once the pole is destroyed. It does, and with some rather gory results.
Fans felt this to be cram packed with action, fun, thrill ride of a horror book. The book has a great villain, and readers were scared the entire way through. There is a superb amount of detail and gore woven in with some fantastic main and supporting characters.
“The Frighteners” is the fourth stand alone novel, which was released in the year 1990. How much do you hate? Eddie Brinkburn has been doing time for the botched garage job that left Sheraton’s brother horribly burned.
Sheraton’s gang burns Eddie’s wife and their kids to death, Eddie quickly realizes the meaning of hate.
This is how that prison psycho is able to transfer his power to Eddie. It is a power that Eddie believes he can really control. One that is going to enable Eddie to put the Frighteners on to Sheraton.
This is a suspenseful thrill ride that picks up a head of steam and makes readers want to come back for more. The central characters are well written and compelling, and there is an original twist on the nature of good and bad. Fans found this book to be imaginative, original, and entertaining that will make some seek more of this author’s work out.
“Darkfall” is the fifth stand alone novel, which was released in the year 1992. There is a raging lightning storm that causes all of the occupants of a high-rise office building to disappear. The only thing that is found is a severed human hand. Detective Jack Cardiff and the rest of his squad are going to discover the hell of a place called Darkfall. It is a place where insane and impossible become very real.
Readers felt spooked and creeped out while reading this one, and it is filled with suspense that you do not even know what is really happening until the end of the story. The story is told in a remarkable way, and makes you want to turn to the next page.
“Gideon” is the sixth stand alone novel, which was released in the year 1993. Gideon is no ordinary guy, he has a hypnotic hold over Jacqueline, Bernice, and Yvonne. There is just a single way to escape. Not everything goes as planned. Gideon returns in a renewed force, and is determined to get revenge for himself.
Readers found this one gripping, wanting to know what was going to happen next.
