E.C. Tubb was a reputed British author of science fiction, western, and fantasy novels. He has penned more than 140 novels and over 230 short stories & novellas. Author Tubb is particularly famous for writing the Cap Kennedy series, The Dumarest Saga, and Space 1999 series. The Dumarest Saga is the one for which he is most well known. It is an epic SF saga that takes place in the far future. Several reviewers have said that Tubb’s reputation for colorful and fast-moving SF is not matched any other author in Britain. A lot of Tubb’s work have been released under different pen names. Some of them include Gregory Kern, Eric Storm, George Holt, Alan Guthrie, Mike Lantry, Edward Thomson, and Carl Maddox. In his career span of more than 5 decades, Tubb used a total of 58 pseudonyms. A few of the pen names used by him were house names of publishers and were used by other authors as well. These include Volsted Gridban, Gill Hunt, King Lang, Brian Shaw, and Roy Sheldon. The Charles Grey alias of Tubb was only his own and had gathered a large fan-following in the early 1950s.
Tubb was born as Edwin Charles Tubb on October 15, 1919, in London, England. He was brought up in his hometown and lived there until he died on September 10, 2010. Tubb was married to Iris Kathleen and is now survived by two daughters named Linda and Jennifer, 3 grandsons named Alan Barham, John Barham, and Steven, and a couple of granddaughters named Julie Hickmott and Lisa Elcomb. During his youth, Tubb was a hardcore fan of pulp SF and fantasy. In 1938, he tried to make contact with other fans in England and attempted to write his first work in the genre. He later told a magazine that he had written his first attempts just for his own pleasure and considered them good examples of what he should not write. When his short story titled No Short Cuts was released in New Worlds in 1951, Tubb realized that he possessed a unique talent of writing stories in the SF genre. Prior to that, he used to work as a printing machinery’s salesman.
Soon after establishing himself as a full-time writer, Tubb became popular for his speed and diversity of output. In the 1950s, he contributed to numerous SF magazines, including Science Fantasy, Galaxy Science Fiction, Futuristic Science Stories, Nebula, etc. Tubb’s contribution to Authentic Science Fiction was quite a big one. He was involved in editing it for nearly 2 years between February 1956 and October 1957. During his tenure with the magazine, Tubb found it very difficult to come across good authors for contributing with short stories. So, he used to often write the stories on his own under a variety of pen names. One of the issues of Authentic was completely penned by Tubb along with its letters column. Tubb’s most influential SF work, Dumarest series, was in publishing from 1967 to 1985. Two of the final volumes were published in 1997 & 2008 respectively.
The second most popular series penned by him, Cap Kennedy series, was published between 1973 and 1983. Later in his life, Tubb was involved in updating most of his 50s SF novels for the readers of the 21st century. Author Tubb is also known for co-founding the BSFA along with other prominent authors of his time. A few of the literary honors achieved by author Tubb include being the 1970 WSFC Heicon’s Guest of Honor, which was held in Heidelberg, Germany, and winning the Nebula SF Literary Award for a total of five times. He is also the recipient of the Cyctricon Literary Award in 1955. Tubb’s short story called Lucifer was the winner of the 1972 Europa Prize. In 2010, Tubb’s The Possessed was awarded the Premio Italia award.
Outside the SF genre, Tubb has written eleven western novels, a Foreign Legion book, and a detective novel. Most of them were published under the house name of Chuck Adams. During the 1970s, Tubb had also written a historical series of three novels based in Ancient Rome. Author Tubb’s 1955 book The Space-Born was adapted into a French TV series in 1962. Its script was penned by Michael Subrela and the direction was handled by Alain Boudet. One more of his short stories, Little Girl Lost, was dramatized into a 1972 Night Gallery segment. The segment was made under the direction of Timothy Galfras and was produced by Stanford Whitmore. It featured Ed Nelson and William Windom in the lead roles.
The popular SF series called The Dumarest Saga written by author E.C. Tubb is comprised of 33 books in total, released between 1967 and 2008. This series revolves around the adventures of the lead character named Earl Dumarest. Several other essential characters mentioned in the books by Tubb include Kalin, Yalung, Nimino, Veruchia, Lady Derai, Jondelle, Zenya, Elois, etc. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘The Winds of Gath’. It was first released in 1967 and re-released by Ace publication in 1982. Initially, Earl Dumarest is introduced as a galactic traveler, a mercenary, and a survivor. He wishes to return home after being too tired. But, this goal seems quite impossible as Earl Dumarest is a part of a decadent universe, where life is very cheap and mind-controlling churches and emotionless conspirators spread a web of intrigue for ensnaring entire galaxies. The goal also seems impossible because Dumarest’s home is known not known to anybody and no one is ready to believe that he hails from Earth. After Earth gets lost in the galaxy, Earl Dumarest finds himself stranded in an unknown world known as Gath. He is under the control of a corrupt ruler, a sadistic prince, the sinister Cyclan, and a Matriarch on the deathbed. No matter how dangerous the path is, Dumarest begins his journey with hope, determination, and dedication by his side.
Another exciting volume of the series is called ‘Derai’. It was also published by Ace in 1982 after its original release in 1973. This book opens by mentioning that Earl Dumarest is still driven by his quest to find his homeworld. In between, he agrees to pose as Lady Derai’s guard with the promise of a commission. Lady Derai is the heiress of the Caldor House that thrives of the world called Hive. On the home planet of Derai, Earl Dumarest hopes to find Earth’s living witnesses. His hopes get shattered when he finds his name in the list of participants of the Folgone Contest, a deadly game whose winner will get Lady Derai as the prize. In this contest, Dumarest faces Cybers, which are emotionless, ruthless tools of an entity that holds a power that could be useful to Dumarest in locating his homeworld, Earth.
