It is not very often that even an author of over 100 books, some non-fiction and some fictional with diverse themes and plots for over 30 years can still be tagged to a particular genre. Well, Graham Masterton, a British novelist seems to have been profiled as such. Though well known for his genre of horror stories, it is less well known that he has authored am equally large number of books away from that genre too; not all of which were fiction. Some of his published novels carry his various nom de plumes as differently assumed from time to time.
Born on 16th January 1946 in Edinburgh, his family has an illustrious lineage. His Grandfather Thomas Thorne Baker was a scientist who owes his eminence for having invented luminous printing ink that is now commonly known as DayGlo and for being known as the first man to transmit news photographs by wireless.
After training to be a newspaper reporter, he was only 24 years when he accepted to be the executive editor of both Penthouse and Penthouse Forum magazines. Even while in this position, he did not allow his passion to be a novelist to die within him. He initially chose to write a series of how-to books on the subject of sex. His first book Acts of Love was published in 1971 but he used Dr.Jan Berghof as his pen-name. A series of other similar books followed; some again assuming a different set of pen-names such as Edward Thorne and Angel Smith. A total of 27 books followed in quick succession, with the last one Up All Night published in 2004.
His reputation as writer on sex health and self-improvement issues grew quite rapidly and he was a much sought-after writer by magazines such as Men’s Health, Woman, Cosmopolitan and Woman’s Own.
However, it was not until 1976 when his horror novel The Manitou was published that he became associated with horror genre of fiction. Graham Masterton published his first novel Manitou in 1976 and went on write 6 more sequels, in what is known in literary circles to be the Manitou series. In 1978, The Manitou was released as a movie by the same name, with Tony Curtis playing in a leading role. It is popularly recognized that Masterton is a master exponent of the use of mythology and demonic creations amongst the genre of horror story-tellers. Therefore his novels are vividly accepted by believers of religious systems.
The talent in him to write horror stories was not limited to adult stories alone; he even wrote horror tales for children. The House of Bones being the most popular one. With young readers in his mind, he made sure that the gore was watered down in his horror novels yet they were just as thrilling for even an adult reader to be glued to the novel and eagerly turn the pages till last page is reached.
The repertoire of books written by Graham Masterton included historical sagas and fictional novels with disaster and thriller as themes. Not all his fictional writings were full-length ones; some were a series of short stories too.
His versatility as a novelist beyond the genre of horror was doubly proven when his writing Night Warriors was published in 1986. The theme of the plot of this novel was based on pure fantasy. As was typical of Graham Masterton whenever he tasted success with a new genre, he wrote no sequels on the same theme; in this case, 4 more after Night Warriors.
It is typical of Masterton to pick a theme and write a series of novels. Examples of such prolific writing, are his collection of short stories “… of Fear” of which he wrote 6 novels, the earliest of which was published in 1994 and last 10 years later in 2014. Another example is the Rook series which extended from 1997 till 2012 and consisted of 8 novels. Yet another example is the Confession series, though however there were only 2 publications. More examples are Sissy Sawyer Series, Nathan Underhill Series and Katie Maguire Series.
Another quirk in his writing habits is to write under pseudonyms. He starts a series in an assumed name and then follows it up with series of novels on the same theme but reverting to his real name. An example is the historical fiction written by him. He commenced with assuming the name of Katherine Winston and wrote his first such novel titled Heartbreaker in 1978. He finally wrote 11 such novels of the same theme but reverting to his real name.
Further examples of his quirky habit of writing novels under assumed names are writing The Hell Candidate, Phobia, The Heirloom and Condor as Thomas Luke. Using Alan Blackwood as his pen name he published Kingdom of the Blind and Plague of Angels.
Masterton was never short of literary experiments. Though a prolific writer, all alone, with large library of books to his singular credit, he was not shy of experimenting to write one in collaboration with another writer. Thus his novel Rules of Duel which was published in 2010 was written in collaboration with William S. Burroughs. This collaboration is unabashedly admitted, in print, by sharing credit with this co-author. Another of his experiments was to pick a character from one of his novels and then proceed to write a story of different genre but wound around the same character. Picking Harry Erskine from The Manitou Sand in the writing of the Djinn, is an example.
Graham Masterton has had his share of recognition. He was awarded a Special Edgar by Mystery Writers of America for his horror novel Charnel House. The Edgars (named after Edgar Allan Poe ) is awarded every year by the Mystery Writers of America and honors the best work of mystery fiction, non-fiction, television and film.
Other awards won by him are Silver Medal from West Coast Review of Books. He was the only non-French writer to win the Prix Julia Verlanger. A short horror story, Underbed, was voted best short story by Horror Critics Guild.
Graham Masterton, now in his seventies, currently lives in Surrey, England. A widower; after his wife Wiescka, who also doubled as his literary agent, died in 2011.
