Anne Perry was born as Juliet Marion Hulme on October 28th 1938. Anne is a renowned English Author who is famous for her role in the historical detective fictions. She is also known for her great contributions in the Thomas Pitt and William Monk’s series.

Perry was convicted at a tender age when she was just fifteen years old in the year 1954 for allegedly murdering her friend’s mother. She later changed her name to Anne Perry when she was released after serving her sentence.

The early life of Juliet Marion Hulme began in Blackheath, a small town located on the South East part of London with its neighbour towns Lewisham (is located West of Blackheathh) and Greenwich (located north of Blackheath). Juliet’s father was Dr. Henry Hulme who was a physicist (studied and researched on various aspects of Physics).

When she was growing she fell ill and after a series of tests she tested positive for presence of Tubercle bacillus in her system and diagnosed with tuberculosis. She was then transferred to South Africa to stay with her relative with hope that the warm African climate will play a role in her recovery.

After her father was selected as a Rector of Canterbury University College (located in New Zealand) she rejoined with her family, she was already thirteen years old. For her post primary education she went to Christchurch Girls’ High School (currently referred to as Cranmer Center) located in Christchurch town in New Zealand.

In the month of June the year 1954, when Juliet Marion Hulme was only 15 years old, together with her friend they brutally murdered her best friends’ (known as Pauline Parker) mother Honorah Rieper (Parker’s mother).

Hulme’s parents had various domestic problems which led to them opting to separate from each other and this would later force Anne Perry to move to South Africa where she would go and live with her relative. The two teenage best friend girls who together created a rich fantasy life, which saw famous actors like Orson Welles and James Mason as their role models, were not for the idea of them being separated from each other.

On the 22nd of June 1994, the two girl friends went for a walk together with Parker’s mother (Honorah Rieper) in Victoria park which was in their own hometown Christchurch. When they were walking on an isolated path they had earlier plotted Hulme would drop an ornamental stone and as Honorah Rieper would bend over to pick it up then Pauline Parker would use the half brick, that had been cautiously wrapped in a pair stocking she was carrying, to hit her.

The girls thought that only a single proper hit on the head would do the job but they were forced to hit Honorah Rieper almost twenty times to completely kill her. Both Parker and Hulme faced trial the same year in 1954 at Christchurch town and on August 29th the same year they were found guilty.

Since they were still very young to be sentenced to death penalty according to the New Zealand Judicial laws at that time, they were instead convicted and then sentenced to be detained at the “pleasure of her majesty”. This ment that they would be detained at the Minister of Justice’s discretion.

They were later released separately after serving five years in jail. It is believed that Pauline Parker and Juliet Marion Hulme lost each others contacts and they never communicated with each other after their trial. These events led to the creation of the film Heavenly Creatures in the year 1994.

In the film Melanie Lynskey played the role of the teenage girl then Pauline Parker and on the other hand Kate Winslet played the role of the teenage girl then Juliet Marion Humle. When the film was released, it had not yet been known that this mysterious author (Anne Perry) was the already grown Juliet Humle.

Her identity was later made known to the public a couple of months later after the release of the film. Some speculated that the relationship between Pauline Parker and Juliet Marion Humle (Anne Perry) might have been a sexual relationship.

She later revealed in the year 2006 that despite her and her best friend having an obsessive relationship together they were never, even a single day, lesbians. After Juliet Humle (Anne Perry) had finished serving her sentence and released from prison, she went back to England where she got a job as a flight attendant.

Sometimes in 1968 she joined Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (headquarters is in Salt Lake City in Utah) while she was in US. Juliet Marion Humle then changed her name to Anne Perry. The name perry she got it from her stepfather (Perry was his surname).

The first novel Anne Perry wrote was entitled “The Cater Street Hangman” which was published in the year 1979. It is a series which features a husband and wife team of Charlotte Ellison Pitt and Inspector Thomas Pitt. These two characters would later be common characters in various character novels written by Anne Perry.

In all the series which Thomas Pitt plays a part in, Anne Perry uses the real name of neighbourhoods in London as her novels’ titles. Another character William Monk, who is a private investigator appears in her first novel “The Face of a Stranger” in the year 1990.

William Monk is a London Police Detective and is involved in a dangerous railway carnage accident in the year 1856. He then wakes up in the hospital with loss of memory and does not remember neither his name nor profession or even how his life has been.

He is then told that his name is William Monk and he is an experienced police detective officer. Once he recovers he is immediately assigned to a difficult case involving murder. In the book Monk is portrayed to solve the cases despite them being difficult cases and remember at some point he could not even remember who he was.

By the time it had reached the year 2003 she had already published more than 47 novels and many more short story collections.

   I have just finished the Charlotte and Thomas Pitt, and Monk Series. Feel terribly upset that Anne is no longer with us to provide such wonderful exciting reading.

   I just found out that Anne Perry died in April. A sad loss. She has provided me with many hours of very enjoyable reading over the past decades. Thank you Anne. RIP

   I think I have read everyone of Anne Perrys books. I have enjoyed them all although my favorite are the Thomas Pitt books I am now reading Daniel Pitts looking forward to the new Christmas one.

   Thank you, Anne, for so many hours (days!) of reading over so many years. I love your writing and the subjects about womens’ rights etc which appear. It was only reading your Charlotte and Thomas books that I realised my aunts and mother were alive in the suffragette period. (I am 77 in January)
   I’m now enjoying Daniel’s works. The war history are among the best I have read, and I have read quit a few.
   So many, many thanks again Anne.
