Bloodlust

Bloodlist in the debut novel in Vampire Files series about adventures of a Jack a news reporter in Chicago newly turned into a vampire. Jack Flemming wakes up dead on the beach after someone attempted to kill him, but due to his past affair with a female vampire, instead of dying he turns to be a vampire. He can’t remember what happened in the past few days after waking up with torn clothes and can’t see clearly in the dark. Jack can’t remember who killed him and with the assistance of a curious private investigator, Charles Escott they start tracking Jack’s history to find who murdered him and the reason behind it. Charles takes him as his client while solving his murder case since he is interested in his condition.

The whole book setting is in Chicago in the 1930s and has a lot of gangsters who troubled people during that time of depression. If Jack uses his powers to protect himself and Charles from being killed, then they will win the battle.

The story is more of a crime than a horror packed with many actions making it fun to read. It is a detective novel based on the fact that vampires do exist. Although Jack mostly makes good use of his powers, there are times he doesn’t use them well. He is an incredibly fun character with a resourceful way of living throughout the tale. His characterization provides a lot of fun counterpoints in the whole story which is very dark and complicated.

There are plenty of twists and turns and actions throughout the story with likable characters and a well-drawn and exciting plot. The author writes well, and the plot is interesting to read. There are many vampire elements, and he shows how Jack uses his powers to investigate his death and how he deals with his new diet and the sensitivity to light.

Lifeblood

Lifeblood is the second book in Vampire Files series where we come across Jack and Escott once more. Jack has been looking for his lost love vampire, Maureen for the past five years but his new affair with a lady named Bobbi, a lady he saved from the mob has made him give up on the search. They appear to be in a relationship and spend most of the time together though jack still spends sometime assisting Escott with the investigations.
He then withdraws the personal advertisements from the newspapers and the absence of the posters brings attention, and things get worse when some vampire hunters appear to him together with Maureen’s elder sister. He realizes that he can’t just give up the search that easily and he has to do whatever it takes to find Maureen or find out what might have happened to her after they parted ways. The search is complicated by an old lady who appears to know more about his vampire powers, and she is trying to capture him. Jack finds himself followed by a number of the bad guys and he has to investigate why they want to kill him and the reason for that.

Both Jack and Escott decide that it would be good if some of Jack’s home earth to be kept t Escott’s place so that in case he does not find it easy returning to the hotel room, he can drive to Escott’s home to pick it. On the way to pull it, he realizes the vampire hunters are following him, but he manages to escape them.

After he collects the earth, he passes through his parent’s home only to find the Vampire hunters waiting for him there. He chases them away and returns to Chicago but still worried about his parents fearing that the vampires might harm them. Thinking that he has escaped the vampires, they begin following him again while in Chicago. He becomes anxious about his lover Bobbi afraid that the vampire hunters might decide to go after her.

His attention is diverted by an old lady, Gaylen Dumont, who responds to his advertisements in the papers and requests him to contact her to get information about Maureen. The old lady appears to be Maureen’s sister and gives Jack some information that which might be of help in the search for Maureen. However, there is more to Gylen than Jack realizes at first, and there is more danger to his girlfriend Bobbi that the vampire hunters. Jack faces a complicated situation that makes him realize that Maureen found herself in and it’s only through the help of his friend Escott that he can survive
.
The story is gravelly and has more emotional engagement from Jack than in the first book. Being a vampire makes him bombproof though he is still vulnerable because of the friends he has made and because of his own family. The story has some humor, and Jack is a very appealing character. The author uses gangsters and mobsters to create an intriguing crime story. The previous book explained Flemming’s death and how he coped with his new Vampirism. The remaining mystery of the woman who turned him into a vampire you find it in this second book though it doesn’t answer all the secrets, it helps in explaining her disappearance.
