About David R. Dow

A well regarded academic and writer of many titles over the years, American writer David R. Dow is a well known authority on law, particularly that of constitutional law. Looking into the law behind the death penalty too, he has made his voice known on the subject over time, really allowing his expertise to speak for itself. He is also a well known figure in regards to contract law too, all of which has enabled him to become respected by many throughout his field. This has also led to him writing numerous articles and essays on the subject, many of which have been featured in prestigious publications both online and off. Working as professor in the field too, he has imparted his expertise to many others as well, including doing Ted talks, which have also allowed him to build upon his profile.

In time he has also gone on to write many works of non-fiction, many of which feature case-files that he has become focused on. These then provide the reader an insight into an otherwise unseen world, giving them a highly unique and distinctive perspective on the subject. Recently this has also extended to fiction too, as he has taken his interest in law and turned it into mystery stories, giving his narratives an extremely authentic feel to them.

Early and Personal Life

From a young again David R. Dow would show a clear academic prowess, which, over time, would grow into a love of literature too. Showing a passion for constantly learning, he would go on to study extensively, which would see him attend Rice and Yale, where he would subsequently graduate from. Pursuing a career in law, he would come to be an expert in the field, being a much sought after authority for his particular expertise. This would then come to see him also becoming a professor in his own right, teaching at universities such as the University of Houston Law Center, where he is the Cullen Professor. Living in Houston he continues to write to this very day, having founded the Texas Innocence Network, he now lives with his wife Katya and their son Lincoln.

Writing Career

Over the course of his writing career David R. Dow has been heavily involved in the area of the death penalty and the many legal issues surrounding it. This has led him to represent more than one-hundred inmates on death-row, as he oversees both their federal and state appeals. With this experience he has also gone on to write many books on the subject too, as well as providing Ted talks on the subject too. Writing many books on the subject too, he has written extensively for publications such as ‘The Daily Beast’, ‘The New York Times’ and ‘The Washington Post’. Really vocalizing what it is that he wants to say, he writes with both passion and vigour on his chosen subject at hand.

Originally published through the ‘Twelve’ publishing label, this would first come out in 2010 on the 3rd of February. Letting the reader into an otherwise unseen way of life, it is a work of non-fiction that definitely doesn’t take its subject matter lightly. Not being a part of any over-arcing series series, it shows the writer Dow clearly in his element, writing with a clear sense of confidence and authority.

Writing in a clear and informative manner, this is a non-fiction work that licenses itself with a certain degree of creativity. Letting the reader understand not just the facts, but the emotions behind the cases as well, Dow examines the death penalty and his own experience with it. This also gives the subject an added sense of weight behind it, never forgetting the importance of what is actually going on throughout. Providing the reader with every detail, it really is an essential book for those looking to learn and understand more on the subject.

Not looking to cast an overly judgemental eye on the death penalty itself, Dow here looks at the execution and how it takes place. Providing a legal aid clinic, he interviews people who have been put to death, granting them appeals on their sentence, in the attempt to give them another chance. Examining the flaws inherent in the system, he attempts to make the reader understand the process every step of the way. Looking at the bare bones facts of the system as well, he aims to give the reader a clear unbiased insight, whilst also laying out his own perspective too. This keeps the reader on equal footing with the author every step of the way, allowing them to essentially make up their own mind at the end of it all.

Confessions of an Innocent Man

Initially released through the Dutton Books publishing imprint, this would be the first fiction book to come out from David R. Dow. First released on the 9th of April in 2019, this would reach an audience worldwide, introducing Dow as a fully fledged writer of fiction for the first time. Whilst it wouldn’t be a part of any series, it would still feature many of the key themes and ideas that Dow has concerned himself with over the course of his life.

Looking for simplicity in his life, Rafael Zhettah is a man of basic needs, having a lot of freedom in his life, both as a bachelor, pilot and the head chef of his own restaurant in Houston, Texas. That’s when the billionaire sophisticate Tieresse comes into his establishment and changes everything, as he comes to feel that she’s his soulmate. Later, though, she is brutally murdered in his home, leaving him to take the blame as an innocent man, before being put on death row. Not looking to take this huge injustice lying down though, he goes about doing all that he can to prevent this from happening and finding the real perpetrator of the crime. Will he manage to find them before it’s too late? Can he hope to save himself in the process? What are the confessions of an innocent man?
