The Poet X is an interesting read and the first full length novel from talented literary force and now acclaimed author Elizabeth Acevedo. If you have read and really enjoyed the poetry of this author, then be sure to check out this debut book from a slam poet that is now bringing her voice to an extended and exuberant form.

When a girl living in Harlem finds slam poetry, she discovers that it is a way to express herself and so much more. Xiomara Batista has no idea that finding this art form may allow herself endless new roads, such as ways to get in touch with the religion that her mother practices or get in touch with the way that she feels about her place in the world.

It’s not easy being a girl growing up in Xiomara’s Harlem neighborhood. She feels like she can’t hide anywhere and does not feel heard at all. She has found that since she has gotten a new body and curves with the onset of puberty, she has also developed a new fierceness. She has been letting her fists do a lot of the talking for her for some time now.

Even though she is frequently lashing out, Xiomara also knows that she has a lot that she wants to express and say. She ends up putting a lot of her passion and her frustration into her notebook, pouring it all out onto the pages between the leather binding. It is a way for her to have an outlet for everything that is going on in her life and everything that she is thinking and feeling.

The words that she writes out she tells to herself and repeats them and recites them just like prayers. Things change in her world slightly one day when she notices a boy named Aman. He is a student in her biology class and she finds herself developing a crush on him. She is secretive just like any other girl her age and wants to make sure that her family never knows that she has any feelings about any boys in her class.

There is also another reason why she is keeping this a secret, and that’s because of her mother. Her mom is determined to get her daughter to follow the ways of their church just like she does. She is very committed to this, and through her attitude, Xiomara decides that at the time she had better keep what she is thinking to herself instead of sharing it. Her mother just would not understand, she thinks.

Xiomara is faced with a tough choice when her passion gets a chance to be shared. Her school has a club that practices slam poetry, and she is invited to become a member of it. It would be interesting to have some people to hang out with that are also into this type of expression. However, she worries that she could not be able to go to these club meets without her mother knowing.

She feels sure that her mother would find out one way or another. On top of that, she feels anxiety about what the experience would be like to put her words into spoken form and share them out loud with others. Even though it’s something that she has fears about, Xiomara cannot get her mind off of being able to perform her own poetry.

She has no idea whether the world would want to listen to her thoughts or not. But this young girl is starting to find her voice and Xiomara as a young artist is going to have to choose whether this is her moment to back down or refuse once and for all to be silent. What will happen in the end? Read this engaging debut novel from author Elizabeth Acevedo to find out!
