Elizabeth Acevedo is a published author.

Elizabeth was born to her parents, both Dominican. She is their youngest child. Elizabeth has a bachelors degree from George Washington University in the field of performing arts. She also attended the University of Maryland, where she graduated with her MFA in what else but creative writing.

Elizabeth Acevedo has well over a dozen years of experience doing performance poetry. She is the winner of a variety of competitions, including the National Poetry Slam. She also participates in various workshops for writers.

Elizabeth Acevedo has had her work published in various poetry collections and magazines. She is the winner of the Berkshire Prize (2016). She currently resides in Washington, D.C., along with her husband.

He is a student in her biology class and she finds herself developing a crush on him. She is secretive just like any other girl her age and wants to make sure that her family never knows that she has any feelings about any boys in her class.

There is also another reason why she is keeping this a secret, and that’s because of her mother. Her mom is determined to get her daughter to follow the ways of their church just like she does. She is very committed to this, and through her attitude, Xiomara decides that at the time she had better keep what she is thinking to herself instead of sharing it. Her mother just would not understand, she thinks.

Xiomara is faced with a tough choice when her passion gets a chance to be shared. Her school has a club that practices slam poetry, and she is invited to become a member of it. It would be interesting to have some people to hang out with that are also into this type of expression. However, she worries that she could not be able to go to these club meets without her mother knowing.

She feels sure that her mother would find out one way or another. On top of that, she feels anxiety about what the experience would be like to put her words into spoken form and share them out loud with others. Even though it’s something that she has fears about, Xiomara cannot get her mind off of being able to perform her own poetry.

She has no idea whether the world would want to listen to her thoughts or not. But this young girl is starting to find her voice and Xiomara as a young artist is going to have to choose whether this is her moment to back down or refuse once and for all to be silent.
