About Paul Gitsham
The British mystery novelist Paul Gitsham is primarily known for his intriguing ‘DCI Warren’ series. A highly adept crime fiction writer, Gitsham has created numerous intricately woven and immersive mysteries. Through his books, he draws in readers from all over the world, making him a household name for many. Publishing engaging and immersive mystery thrillers, he has an in-depth understanding of the genre, taking them in exciting new directions.
Early and Personal Life
Born in 1977 in Coventry, England, Paul Gitsham would begin his career working in biology before writing full-time. Attending Bishop Ullathorne School, he would later receive his Ph.D. from the University of Manchester in molecular biology. Previously contributing to several papers primarily focused upon yeast in genetics, he would also work as a receptionist for a short period and in a bank.
Moving into teaching, he would become a science teacher at Saffron Walden County High School before finding his voice as a writer. His dream of becoming a novelist would be one that he’s had since primary school, as he’d continue to develop while working in laboratories in both the UK and Canada. Now a successful novelist, he continues to work as a teacher while making a name for himself in mystery fiction.
Writing Career
During his childhood, Paul Gitsham would write the novelization of ET, only to discover it already existed, but the experience proved invaluable. His first published work, ‘The Last Straw,’ would be released in 2014 and was the first in the ‘DCI Warren Jones’ series of mystery novels. Following the eponymous detective, the mysteries themselves take place in the fictional English town of Middlesbury.
The books would become hugely successful worldwide, incorporating shorter novellas into the series. A member of the ‘Crime Writer’s Association,’ he’s an integral part of the mystery writing community, primarily working with the HarperCollins publishing label. With further works set in the pipeline, he’s a writer who’s got more to say, as he’ll continue writing for some time to come.
The Common Enemy
Published in 2018 on the 12th of September, this would first come out through the ‘HQ Digital’ publishing label. Marking the fourth book in the ongoing ‘DCI Warren Jones’ series of mystery novels, it would carry on after the events of the previous title. The books read as stand-alone stories, but they also have a lot to offer returning fans of the series, with ongoing arcs and narratives.
Set in the town of Middlesbury, a far-right organization called the British Allegiance Party is planning to protest a Mosque’s opening. The protest crowds later disperse to reveal the body of the political group’s leader, Tommy Meegan, stabbed directly through the heart. Following this, a Muslim community center just across town is set ablaze, and a small child is critically injured, leading to tension in the community reaching boiling point. Now DCI Warren Jones must investigate a town at war with itself, finding the killer before the tension tips over and revenge ensues.
This story masterfully uses suspense, really getting a feel for the world it inhabits and the characters that live there. The novel establishes a sense of realism using real-world events and situations, making for a highly engaging narrative. Well-written with something to say, the book doesn’t shy away from addressing some deeper issues while remaining entertaining and compelling.
Forgive Me Father
Initially released through the ‘HQ Digital publishing label, this would first come out on the 1st of June 2019. Following on from the previous mystery, it provides another self-contained story in the ‘DCI Warren Jones’ series of novels. It’s the fifth book in the franchise and provides a straightforward thriller with surprises waiting at every page turn.
There’s a body in the debris of a chapel fire, and DCI Warren Jones learns that someone had locked the doors from inside. At first, it seems that it could be a suicide, with a note found, but upon further investigation, it could be a violent murder. Following a further discovery on a riverbank, the mystery deepens for Jones, with several deaths taking place. Investigating further, Jones sets about learning the truth of what happened, seeking to get to the bottom of it one way or another.
Another fine thriller from Gitsham, the story continues the DCI Warren Jones mysteries in a tense and suspenseful manner. It’s guaranteed to keep readers hooked, with its twists and turns# infused with elements of social commentary. Pulled into the story from the outset, it makes the most of its engaging premise, immediately getting to the point and not letting go.
A Price to Pay
Brought out through the ‘HQ Digital’ imprint once more, this is the sixth title in the ‘DCI Warren Jones’ mystery series. It would continue from ‘Forgive Me Father,’ while paving the way for the seventh book, ‘Out of Sight,’ in 2021. A tightly packed police procedural, this mystery thriller would come out on the 5th of June back in 2020.
It should be easy to solve when a murder happens in broad daylight, but there’s more to the case than initially expected for DCI Warren Jones. The son of a local crime family who has a reputation for hitting on other men’s wives gets murdered in front of Serbian nationals who speak little English. With the list of suspects rising, the victim’s family seeks to protect his memory by destroying all connections with his criminal past. Untangling the lies from the fiction, Jones must deal with an investigation that could unravel his entire team with the truth.
An intricate and impressive thriller, this again succeeds in providing a taut mystery that doesn’t hold back. Pushing the suspense to the limit, Warren fully fleshes out Jones as a character, with him being put to the test here. At this point, the series has confidently hit its stride, knowing exactly where it’s going and what needs doing. A powerful voice in the mystery crime genre, Gitsham will continue to astound readers worldwide for a long time to come.
