The Cynster book series is very well written family fiction on a class of its own.

These books depict and portray the psychological insight of the author on the relationships which develop between men and women of contrasting backgrounds and approaches to life. These Cynster family series books cover members of the family, their close relatives and bosom friends. These novels have for their set up and back ground a historically significant time frame; an era generally called as the Regency Era. Their genre can be classified as romantic; but there are subtle differences and fine deftly woven nuances which gives these a character and value of their own. These novels are quite long each with an average of 450 to 500 pages.

One chief aspect of these family series is a well written, well portrayed contrast between masculine emotions and elegant social behavior features of attractive women of the family.

In this brief study of the several books in the Cynster family series, we shall restrict ourselves to briefly, look at and review the biographical characteristics which are covered in the Cynster Sisters Trilogy; which covers three books( Book numbers 16,17 and 18 of these famous series. The main reason for our selection of this trilogy series is that it has been expected from the author, Stephanie Laurens for quite a few years. At last they came on and this is as good as a reason as any other for us to subject it for our review and a critical overview.

As different from the general readers perceptions and concept about ordinary romantic novels, the well written trilogy here has three weddings as the prime driver of an attractive scheme of things. There are also three heroes and three successful rescue attempt well woven into the structural fabric of these novel series.

The main characters of this trilogy series are the sisters; the daughters of Lord Martin and Lady Celia Cynster. These sisters are Heather, Eliza and Angelica. Readers of the first of these family series of books, Devil’s Bride(1998) may remember that these sisters initially appeared there. And so a few years have passed by and the sisters are now of marriageable change and several eligible bachelors are on the look out to tie the knot with them.

Another geographically and perhaps biographically too significant facet of these novels is that they take place in the beautiful natural surroundings of Scotland.

The three books of this Cynster Trilogy series are called as below

1.Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue

2.In Pursuit of Eliza Cynster

3.The Capture of the Earl of Glencrae.

The first of these trilogy series is the sixteenth novel of the Cynster series. Here is where the wedding of Miss Heather Cynster takes place; but only after passing through a series of heart breaking and romantically agonizing saga of experiences; at the culmination of which the daring and courageous Viscount Breckenridge rescues our “damsel in distress.” There is also mystery and danger carefully and skillfully merged into this classical romance story making it all the more attractive and fanciful for the readers. This book had received many excellent reviews from the romantic genre of critics and writers.

In Pursuit of Eliza Cynster is the second of the trilogy and the 17th of the Cynster series. Here also it is the wedding that functions as the prime mover of the story. Here romance and fantasy are coupled with abduction and kidnapping. This kidnapping takes place at the engagement function of the heroine’s sister. A change indeed for an abduction scenario. In her agonizing and nerve shattering attempts to escape, she trusts one Jeremy Carling who is no match to the vile and devilish schemes of the villainous kidnappers. The scene has to end up in a climax and that is when the couple finds the moments to understand, realize and experience love and life at its best.

The third book of the trilogy and the eighteenth novel of the Cynster series is titled The Capture of the Earl of Glencrae. The anticipated wedding of Miss Angelica Cynster is the main driver behind this but once again the characters has to pass through “agonies” and “ecstasies” before they unite in love. In this third of the trilogy,revenge is built in as a background.

As the reader can see these Cynster series novels are mysteriously and skillfully planned sagas of a series of human experiences. The inter relationships of the sisters between themselves ,their attachments to close relatives ,parents and intimate friends are all portrayed with unparalleled psychological insight into young women’s dreams, aspirations and ambitions. The spirit of adventure and their affinity towards risk and danger, their attitude towards a “Prince Charming”;always elusive, always in the shadows just to be grabbed; all these find skilful expressions in the repertoire of life experiences possessed by the author; Stephanie Laurens.

All the novels of the Cynster family series also bring to light the elite family circles of the Regency Era in England. Historically and biographically significant, novels are in fact excellent depiction of the social life existing at those times. In ultimate analysis, scrutiny and review we can categorically state that these novels display also the emotional drama and how youthful adventure and dare-devil-nature can land any one in trouble and turmoil. The basic human, social, psychological and personal values which one needs to develop from an early age are shown as characteristics to lead a peaceful happiness. Together with these aspects are also displayed the values of courage, enthusiasm as preliminary and fundamental requirements; especially for men. Male domination of situations will not lead to ultimately peaceful life. That young women and men of the Regency era has learnt from their various experiences are guidelines for the future generations. This is where the sociological, personal and communal values of these books lie. The spirit of these series should serve as eye openers to the modern youth, because history teaches you lessons.
