JaQuavis Coleman had one of the most unlikely journeys to the top of the New York Best Sellers list.

Unlike many top authors who come from middle class, educated upbringings, JaQuavis is a man who lived in the gutter and was a self confessed drug pusher.

He lived his early days in constant fear of his life. But instead of continuing on the road to a life in crime and an almost certain early death, JaQuavis decided to turn his life around and use his experiences for a new sort of career.

Instead of making money from drug deals, he made money by writing about drug deals and a gangland culture he was brought up in. Suddenly, the new genre of Street Lit had a new kid on the block who knew what he was writing about because he lived it every day.

JaQuavis has never quite explained what was the pivotal moment of his life when he decided to get away from the life he knew so well. But he went to college, wrote about his experiences and at the age of 17, his semi-biographical accounts of living on the tough streets of the USA became an instant success.

And now, along with his wife Ashley, he is one part of a double act regarded as one of the best literary duos of modern times.

The pair are New York Times best-selling authors and base many of their stories on growing up in the rough streets of Flint in Michigan.

Ashley & JaQuavis are the youngest African American co-authors to appear twice on the New York Times best-sellers list.

They were discovered by another New York Times best selling authoryCarl Webber who immediately realised their potential.

They actually received publishing deals while they were freshman in college and have not looked back since.

The smash hit novel The Cartel put them on the road to literary fame and they have a huge following of fans – either as a team or individual writers.

They have appeared in publications such as Vibe, Essence, King and XXL, King as well as Don Diva.

They have had three trilogies – the Carter series, the Murderville tales and the Dopeman’s Trilogy which have earned them fan around the world..

All three series of books cemented their position as massive talent in the literary world even though they are still at a relatively young age.

The Murderville series is in talks about becoming a film because of the tragedy and the fact it is a love story. It is based on two children from Sierra Leone who battle against life’s modern tragedies but try to stay in love against all the problems facing them.

It centres on the two main characters Liberty and A’shai who relive their journeys in their past surviving the the streets as Liberty lays dying of heart problems – at the time. The story takes them from arranged marriage, Mexico’s drug cartel, child brothels , hustling in Detroit to earn money and then to escaping to the L.A underworld. It is now under talks about becoming a major film production.

Yet it was the Cartel series with the married couple really took off on back in 2013 and is another film possibly in the making.

Coleman, then just 27, was honoured by Ebony magazine as being amongst the top 100 most influential African Americans despite his relative youth.

After starting on their own, Ashley and JaQuavi decided to collaborate for their first novel Dirty Money which they claimed took them just three weeks to write. They said they found it so easy because they were working with each other and it was based largely on experiences they had encountered in their lives. JaQuavis is proud of the fact he survived a tough upbringing and is able to tell the tables in a sort of fiction form – even though he says his inspiration is based largely on reality.

JaQuavis along with Ashley have both appeared twice in the New York best sellers list and many people consider them to be the best of their genre.

They have had 14 novels published which set them up nicely to sign up with the world famous Cash Money Records, where they started the Murderville series.

A full production movie in in the works for one of their best-selling novels with others under discussion.

In the final instalment of the Murderville saga, without giving too much away, the pair bring a story of grit, street life and treachery which has become their trade mark.

The final instalment introduces the story of the black dahlia and her bloodstained ascent to power. after establishing a connection with “the five families”. Dahlia becomes one of the untouchables in a seat of the pants ride from start to finish.

Liberty has relocated to her home town only to get a visit from her past and after a series of events comes face to face with dahlia. According to one critic, the final instalment is “storytelling at its greatest”.

But they are also known for their highly successful Cartel series which features the Diamond family who have managed to survive deceit, betrayal – and murder.

JaQuavis showed he is more than capable of writing thrillers on his with the high acclaimed The White House which is based on true events.

It recalls the dark days of a notorious drug dealer and his rise to become a head of a crime syndicate before his death.

The young heroine in the book is called Draya who lives a low key lifestyle, struggling from pay check to pay check as a maid in a luxurious white house.

One day during her duties, she is presented with an opportunity for risky yet quick pay day if she goes against her normal behaviour.

What follows is a tale of murder, kidnapping and mayhem which leads to an explosive ending.

JaQuavis is already established now as an author of note even at such a young age. And he vows he will continue with the with many more experiences he has not tapped into yet.
