Ally Carter is one of the most successful writers of Young Adult literature today. Her fast-paced, high-energy novels delight readers of all ages. Her boarding school settings are the perfect venue for the fun, flirty, books teens crave.
Ally was born and raised in Oklahoma by a teacher mom, and farmer/rancher father. She was active in numerous high-school organizations before attending Oklahoma State University, and the Cornell University. She then worked in agriculture for several years before writing her first novel, “Cheating at Solitaire,” a book for adults.
Her breakout Young Adult novel was “I’d Tell You I Love You, But Then I’d Have to Kill You.” Since then, she has gone on to write five more novels in the “Gallagher Girls” series. Her next series was the “Heist Society” Trilogy. She is currently working on a new Trilogy called “Embassy Row.” The first novel in that series, “All Fall Down,” will be released in January of 2015.
Her books have been published in over 20 countries. They have appeared on Best Seller Lists such as the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Barnes and Noble, IndyBound, and Bookscan. They have sold over 2 million copies in the United States alone.
The movie rights for her first Young Adult series, Gallagher Girls, has been optioned by Tonik Productions, the same studio which released “The Giver,” Fall of 2014. So there may be a Gallagher Girls movie in the future.
What sets Ally’s books apart from other Young Adult fiction currently on the market is their realism and edginess. Her first series, Gallagher Girls, is set in a boarding school which trains young women to be spies. Her next series, Heist Society, is about a girl who is the daughter of infamous jewel thieves. Her current series is set on Embassy Row where international politics takes center stage. Ally’s books are far from the paranormal or dystopian trope which has become so common in Young Adult literature.
Her characters are strong young women who rely on their brains and their training to solve their problems. They don’t have special powers, they are just special.
I’d Tell You I Love You, But I’d Have To Kill You
Gallagher Academy Sophomore, Cammie is an exceptional student. She excels at classes such as Advanced Martial Arts, Chemical Warfare, and CIA Codebreaking. She can speak fourteen languages, and kill a man seven different ways. You see, Gallagher Academy is no ordinary school. It’s an elite institution that takes extraordinary young women and turns them into world-class spies. And Cammie is at the head of her class.
Then she meets an ordinary boy. He has no idea who Cammie is, or what she is capable of. He just knows he’s attracted to her. And the feeling is mutual. But if she reveals herself to him, both of their lives will not just be in danger, they will be over.
How can Cammie have a relationship with a boy who can never know the truth about her? Is a relationship even real if it’s based on a lie?
Cross My Heart and Hope to Spy
Cammies second semester at Gallagher Academy starts with a visit from the boy’s school, The Ethan Frome Academy for Boys. How will the addition of boy sleuths impact all girls school?
First, Cammie is blamed for a security breach which could expose Gallagher Acadamy’s top secret status. It will take all of her friend’s support, skills, and training, to locate the real culprit and clear Cammie’s name. Only by finding out who is responsible for the breach can the girls ensure the security of their beloved school is retained.
Next, the arrival of the boys and the mystery surrounding “Blackthorne” provide another distraction for Cammie and her friends. Cammie may be a wiz at decoding secret messages, undercover operations, and covert field tactics, but when it comes to boys, she’s clueless. So when it comes to dealing with boys who have similar skills and training, Cammie is totally lost.
Finally, her mother, and Headmistress of Gallaher Academy, is acting very strange. Especially when the issue of her father comes up. Cammie is still desperate to find out what happened to her beloved father who disappeared on a covert mission. But all she is finding are dead ends.
Can Cammie clear her name, find out about her father, and figure out boys before summer break?
Don’t Judge a Girl by Her Cover
Cammie joins her friend Macey in Boston for an end of summer fling, and to see Macey’s father accept the nomination for Vice President of the United States. But when someone tried to kidnap Macey and the Presidential Nominee’s son, Cammie has to swing into action to help her friend.
After sustaining a head injury, and finding her friend Macey has a broken arm, Cammie knows that the men who attacked them have sinister intentions. She just doesn’t know who or what they are. But now
Macey has to join her father on the campaign trail. Two more students, Bex, and Liz join Cammie and Macey on the whirlwind cross-country tour. The three girls form a security guard, augmented by Cammie’s Aunt, the fully-trained professional.
In their quest to keep their friend safe, they are forced to break numerous school rules, but that’s what friends are for. They also have their share of mysteries to solve along the campaign trail. Such as what does Zach, the Blackthorne student they met last semester have to do with everything that’s happening.
The girls hope that if they can just make it to the November election, everything will return to normal, but when you attend a school for girl spies, how do you know what normal is?
The Gallagher Girls Series includes three more titles. They all portray strong female characters. Male solve the girl’s problems for them. They don’t use their gender as an excuse for anything, and they take on challenges equal to the males in their sphere. They also portray girls who have the same problems and issues as everyday girls. Friends, boys, school work, and parents. This makes the story of a spy school for girls totally relatable. The language and boy/girl relationships in the books make them suitable for young teens, but the high-energy stories, make them appreciated by people of all ages.

I saw the first book in a stack of free books and the title intrigued me so I picked it up and read it, not realizing it was a series, but after reading I had to have the rest. I think I am on number 6. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading them and I am 65, LOL. I have gotten some of the other series also and will read them all.
