Author Diane Fanning was born Diane Lynn Butcher in the city of Baltimore, Maryland. First, she graduated from Perry Hall High School and later from Lynchburg College in Virginia, majoring in chemistry. She lives in Bedford, Virginia.
When she was six years old, she and her family moved into a house that her dad built in Baltimore County. While living here, a pivotal moment occurred. At the age of nine, a man drove up to her, and claimed to be looking for directions. He was really looking to abduct her. She was able to help the cops catch the guy, and the guy had sexually assaulted and killed an eight year old girl the previous month. It created a lifelong interest in the mind and psychology of a criminal.
Upon hearing about Krystal Surles (a ten year old girl) who helped end the two decade long killing spree Tommy Lynn Sells, and her experience resonated with her for a long time. This was a kid that had done more and endured more than she had, and showed a lot of courage, determination, and fortitude in the process. Diane felt that she just had to write her story, and it led to the first true crime book she had ever worked on, and it was called “Through the Window”.
While she had her three kids living in her house, she did not write books. She simply could not do it. She has been doing it since her youngest went off to college and has been writing ever since then.
After college, Diane wrote for the advertising field and earned over seventy Addy Awards for her, one was for Best in Show. During this time, she also wrote some freelance work.
She and Wayne Fanning (who is Diane’s husband) have three kids Pete Fanning, Ivy Johnson, and Liz Nichols.
Fanning writes both true crime and mystery novels. Her first novel, “The Windwalkers” was released in the year 2000.
During the year 2002, she corresponded with Tommy Lynn Sells, a serial killer, and in one of his letters, he confessed to killing a ten year old boy. This boy’s mother was convicted of killing the boy. It was her testimony and the book she wrote that was able to prove the mom’s innocence.
Her book “Written in Blood” got nominated for an Edgar Award in the year 2006.
“The Trophy Exchange” is the first novel in the “Lucinda Pierce” series, which was released in the year 2008. Life has been rough on Lieutenant Lucinda Pierce. Her face was disfigured and she lost one of her eyes while responding to a domestic violence call. She once killed a small child by accident during a shoot-out with the kid’s dad.
Currently, she finds herself going up against a serial killer. The main suspect is a doctor that is highly respected and know for his international relief work. It sure is good that she doesn’t mind bending the rules.
Fans of the novel found this to be a fast paced action read and is a must read for those in love with thriller books. Some readers cannot wait to dig into other books by this author, this one was that interesting.
“Punish the Deed” is the second novel in the “Lucinda Pierce” series, which was released in the year 2008. Sharon Fleming (a children’s charity worker) is found mutilated on the floor at the office kitchen. There is a note by her body that says she was left behind.
Lucinda has to track down this violent killer before he is able to kill someone else. Threatening notes left on the windshield of her car only serve to complicate the case and might just put Lucinda in danger while she learns that no good deed goes unpunished.
Fans of the novel enjoy reading about Lucinda Pierce, who is tough and mean, not at all afraid to challenge the rules if she can save an innocent person. Readers find that Diane Fanning never disappoints, and this is the latest example of this. As always, the action starts right at the beginning of the book and never lets up for a single moment.
“Mistaken Identity” is the third novel in the “Lucinda Pierce” series, which was released in the year 2010. A woman’s body has been laid out on a bed carefully in a suburban home. Despite the single gunshot wound to the head, she looks pristine. In the tub, there is the bloody male corpse that is missing its hands and head.
The son (who is thirteen years old) reacts to the deaths in an odd way, claiming that his dad is immortal and sold his soul to the devil. Lucinda believes that this family has got something it wants to hide. She has to uncover the secret holding the key to the entire investigation. The case is made tougher when she gets some news from her hometown that bring back some painful memories for her. She is going to have to transcend them if she is going to solve this case.
Fans of the novel find that Diane Fanning continues to do a great job of switching from true crime to fiction very nicely.
“Twisted Reason” is the fourth novel in the “Lucinda Pierce” series, which was released in the year 2010. A missing old man turns up dead on his son’s front porch. Lucinda does not know if she is investigating a homicide or one of the weirdest natural deaths that she has ever seen.
While searching for a missing five year old female, she finds two more senior citizens’ bodies. A failed attempt to abduct someone takes Lucinda to a guy who did a bunch of wrong things for every right reason. She also is taken to an odd little Wonderland that was built with a lot of imagination and just a little money.
Fans of the novel find that Fanning’s stories flow and she does not leave any loose plot threads hanging. Some feel that this is not the last book of Fanning’s they will read, and they will continue to read the series as long as new books are published.

Hi Diane,
Enjoyed the closing of Lucinda’s adventure along the Blue Ridge Parkway at Peaks of Otter Lodge. My mind was gobsmacked back over sixty years when you so perfectly described slipping Van’s Morgan beneath that gate. Oh what a time we were privileged to share with such an advanced human being. I often wonder if any memorial to Vanauken was ever founded. I would like to converse further with you about a number of things. Please write me at your convenience. Aloha and Be Well.
Just read “Bite the Moon”… now I must read her other , earlier books. A quick read. Her style reminds me of Robert B. Parker books.
