Dan Gutman was born in New York, moving to Newark, New Jersey. There the family was abandoned by the father and the future author of My Weird School series was brought up. After a degree in psychology from Rutgers university, Gutman joined graduate school. With a strong desire to write however, Gutman moved to New York in nineteen eighty and began to write for magazines. While still the editor of Stag, he followed a passion in Video Games to start Video game player later Computer games.

Gutman was however never comfortable with the grownup world. His primary passion lay in writing for kids. Gutman’s computer game related work was also published as a column by Genie Livewire. He has written over seventy books in the My weird school series of books, companion books in the my weird school daze and My weirder school. He is also the author of the million-dollar series, the baseball card series and books such as the race for the sky which is an account of the invention of Aeroplanes by the Right Brothers in the form of a diary. The funny boy series and They came from centre field deal with aliens and extra-terrestrials. The book about aliens trying to learn baseball in They came from centre field is both funny and entertaining. All his books deal with human, kids and their view of the grownups. They also involve interesting and funny characters, teachers and adults all trying to take advantage of the kids.

The My weird school series of books revolve around the adventures of Arlo Jervis or AJ to his friends. His friends include Ryan, Andria, Alexia, Neil and Michael. Together they are witness to sometimes hilarious adventures of the adult characters. Written from a children’s perspective, the primary purpose of the books is to help attract kids to reading. The My weird school series comprises of twenty-one books. My weird school daze has twelve books and other companion series including my weirder school, My Weird School Special, My Weirdest School and My Weird School Fast Facts consist of thirty-five books.

The first book in the my weird school series is Miss Daisy Is Crazy. In this book, AJ and his friends are in for some fun and interesting times. Miss Daisy AJ’s second grade teacher, doesn’t know how to read nor does she comprehend any math. The kids desperately try to teach her multiplication, yet she can’t understand. All she likes doing is eat Bonbons and watch television. AJ and his friends do their best to unravel such facts of life as is the school Nurse Mrs. Cooney, really a spy? Her eye chart on the wall is a mystery to them and they think it might be a code. The book also reveals how AJ’s wildest dream about transforming the school is realised. With a mix of humer, common sensical approach and beautiful understanding of kids, the author manages difficult questions of why is math important? Do football players really need to study? We also meet fascinating characters like Mr. Klutz, the school principal.

Remember Mr. Klutz from the first book? He is back with a bang in this book. The book tells the story of AJ and his friends as they try and understand why their principal behaves the way he does. He skates boards to school for one and offers to throw an unlimited chocolate party if they solve one million math problems. When AJ is sent to the principal’s office for not completing his homework a he is offered a candy as incentive. With loads more humer, black and white cartoons and beautifully simple words this book will keep the second and third graders busy. The book is fun while delivering the same unwavering message of have fun while you learn. The book is also filled with weird antics, interesting challenges and the first-person narrative by AJ showing the working of a child’s mind. IT is sure to delight any child heart with warm and great humer.

Some interesting characters through the books are AJ. He is the main protagonist, loves football, Video games and skate boarding. Another interesting character is Ryan Dole. He is AJ’s best friend. His love for eating things is unrivalled. He eats such strange things as the school lunch, vegetables and seat cushions. He sprayed ketchup and finished off a bus seat’s cushion in one of the books. Neil crouch is another of AJ’s friends. He is known as the Nude kid. Out of the two girls Alexia is the one who likes everything AJ does and hates everything else he dislikes. Finally, Andria is one of two main foil for the main character. She calls boys dumb however secretly admires the hero.

Among the adults or the teachers interesting characters include the principal Mr. Klutz whom we have met before. Mr. Granite is an extra-terrestrial and teaches AJ and his friends. He also runs space ships on potatoes. Ella Mentry is the founder of the school however the school always meets with a mishap when she visits. WE also have the interesting and crazy security guard Officer Spence, the spy Mrs. Cooney and many many more. The books are filled with characters easily comprehensible to children and are sure to become favourites.

Gutman’s book Honus & Me from the Baseball card series, was turned into a television movie by turner network. The stories revolve around Joe Stoshak a child who goes back in time to meet his favourite baseball stars. The movie stars Matthew Modine and Kristin Davis. Gutman rose to fame when his book the Kid who ran for president published in ninety ninety-six, was compared to Trump’s run for president in twenty sixteen in a segment of a John Oliver’s show Last week tonight.

To conclude, Gutman’s books are both entertaining and humorous. They educate kids and show adults a way to reach out to reluctant readers. For parents who have any challenges to get their kids to read will find the book, the accompanying cartoons and large text helpful. The good all-around fun also attracts young readers.
