Tanith Lee is a British author. She is a writer that has written extensively in many mediums and is known for her writing in the fantasy, horror, and science fiction genres. In her time as a published author, she contributed to fourteen collections, wrote seventy seven novels, and composed nearly three hundred short stories.
Lee was born on September 19, 1947. She passed away on May 24, 2015. During her long career, she did more than just write stories. Lee wrote four radio plays that were aired on the BBC broadcast. She also contributed to the UK television series Blake’s 7, a cult science fiction television show. Tanith Lee didn’t always write full time; before that, she worked as a waitress, shop assistant, file clerk, and an assistant librarian.
Tanith Lee first became a published author with the publication of her short story Eustace in 1968. She furthered her career and public awareness of her work when several of her stories were published in fantasy anthologies.
Her first full length fictional novel to come out was the children’s novel The Dragon Hoard, which was published in 1971. Her first novel of fiction for the adult market was titled The Birthgrave. It was released in 1975 and is the debut novel in the Birthgrave series, which would have two more books come out to make it a trilogy.
Lee has done very well ever since Daw Books USA accepted her novel, an adult fantasy story, and put it out for mass consumption by the readers as a paperback for the mass market. Ever since then, Tanith has kept an output of writing and churned out novels that readers have been eagerly picking up and reading for years. Her novels have been very popular and earned her several awards.
Tanith Lee was awarded the World Fantasy Award for The Gorgon in 1983 for best short fiction. The next year, she won it again for best short fiction once more for her work “Elle Est Trois”. She was the daughter of Hylda and Bernard Lee, who were both talented ballroom dancers. There was a rumor that she was the biological daughter of the man who played M in the sixties James Bond films, but that is just a rumor. What is not a rumor, however, is that she married John Kaiine, a fellow artist and author in 1992.
In addition to these accolades, Lee has attended numerous fantasy and science fiction conventions and was named the Guest of Honor for a few of them, including the 1981 Boskone XVIII Convention in Boston, Massachusetts, as well as Ottawa’s 1984 World Fantasy Convention in Canada, as well as many others in London and more. She received the titled of the Grand Master of Horror in 2009, a very prestigious title.
She is also the author of several other highly acclaimed series and novels. Lee is the author of the series the Novels of Vis, the Flat Earth series, the Castle of Dark fantasy series, the Blood Stone series, and several more, including the highly regarded Tanaquil fantasy series. That series kicked off in 1989 with the release of the debut novel, Black Unicorn. The sequel came out in 1994 and is called Gold Unicorn. The third novel in the series is Red Unicorn, and it came out in 1997.
Black Unicorn is the critically acclaimed first novel in the Tanaquil series by Tanith Lee. This incredible series of fiction may well just be Lee’s best work and if you love fantasy series, science fiction series, or anything that is just well written with a touch of the incredible, then this is the book for you.
Jaive is a sorceress and she lives in a simple home with her daughter, Tanaquil. Tanaquil and her mother are shocked one day when a black unicorn shows up. Not a real one, but one that is mechanical in nature. No one knows anything about it, but Tanaquil seems to understand everything about the beast in an instant.
If she knows anything in this world, it’s that this unicorn has come for her. Jaive is a sorceress but she always thought that Tanaquil had no magic inside of her at all and had not inherited any of her powers. However, Tanaquil is shocked because this unicorn came for her, and it needs something from her.
The young but bold Tanaquil may have a talent for magic after all– something that she never thought was possible or even thought about all that much. Her mother was always the talented one. She’s always had a bit of a knack for taking little parts of machinery and fiddling with them until she put something together to make, but she never thought that it was magic.
Seemed more like good engineering ability, that’s all. But with the help of The Peeve, her round little companion that is constantly getting into trouble, and a bit of luck and ability, she may be able to put this black unicorn together after all. Because deep down, she can feel it: that’s what it wants. To be whole, and come into being.
What will happen with the unicorn and Tanaquil? You must read the enchanting and captivating novel Black Unicorn by Tanith Lee to find out.
Gold Unicorn is the second novel in the Tanaquil series by Tanith Lee. Tanaquil never thought she was magical, and she definitely thought that she was an only child. That’s not the case anymore when she discovers that she has a half sister named Lizra.
Lizra is actually an empress, and she is hungry for power. Tanaquil’s skills are made known to her, and suddenly this half-sister finds out that her new sibling may want something from her more than to reignite the family connection.
Lizra has been making great strides and conquering the land at a swift pace thanks to her army. All are forced to surrender and make offerings to their new Empress. Lizra has a plan to make a glorious golden unicorn that will help her to take over all of the lands and finally unite the people. However, when she accidentally creates a gate to another world, things are about to get complicated.
Find out what happens to the Peeve, Tanaquil, Lizra, and more in this exciting sequel and second novel of the Tanaquil series by Tanith Lee!
