Jack Sheffield is a renowned author from Britain, who is famous for writing historical, humor, and fiction novels. He is very well known for his Teacher series of novels. This popular series of his is also known by the name, the Jack Sheffield series. He has set the main character of the series based on his himself and has named him after himself, and so the name of the series. In his books, author Sheffield has described the story of a headmaster in a school located in a fictional village in Yorkshire. He has done the setting of the stories starting from the late seventies up to the early eighties. Along with telling the stories of headmaster Sheffield, the author has also tried to portray the life in Yorkshire at the time exactly as it was. Author Sheffield was born as Jack Linley in Leeds in the year 1945. He was brought up in Gipton Estate’s tough environment, located in the north-eastern region of Leeds. After completing his academic studies, the first job that author Sheffield took up was that of a pitch boy. His primary job was to carry buckets full of boiling bitumen and climb ladders to assist in the repair work of the roofs. During the 1960s, Sheffield underwent training at the St. John’s College in York to become a teacher. While he was undergoing the training in the art of teaching, Sheffield spent his summer days working as Corona Pop Man. His training in the field of teaching enabled author Sheffield to get a job as a head teacher of a couple of schools in the North Yorkshire in the late 70s and early 80s.

The beginning of 1970s saw author Sheffield taking up a teaching job in Keighley, West Yorkshire. During the time he was employed with this job, Sheffield achieved the reputation of a hard tackling wing forward for the RUFC of Wharfedale. But, he continued with his teaching profession as he entered the decade of the 1980s. Continuing with the profession of teaching, author Sheffield went on to become a senior lecturer in the Primary Education at the Leeds’ University’s Bretton Hall College. At this point in life, Sheffield began recording the amusing stories that he experienced in the villages. The experience of village life helped him come up with many interesting stories, which he later used to develop his fiction books. And with the publishing of all such stories, Sheffield gained the reputation of a noteworthy author. His books became successful in far and wide place all across the globe and earned him a lot of fame and respect. Many prominent critics and fellow authors noticed his works and praised him for his dedicated efforts. Author Sheffield’s unique storylines and excellent character descriptions were liked by numerous readers all over the world. This helped him in getting the support of many dedicated fans, who loved all his work and kept motivating him to continue doing his good work. Immediately after the release of his debut novel, Teacher, Teacher!, author Sheffield took retirement from teaching with the intention of focusing on the writing career on a full-time basis. The book worked wonders for him and his career and sold 1,00,000 printed copies worldwide. This huge success at his career’s start gave a much needed boost to author Sheffield, which helped him write many other interesting stories over the course of the next few years. Author Sheffield has residences in Hampshire and York, and divides his time between his two homes. He likes to indulge in different interesting activities whenever he gets spare times from his busy writing schedules.

The Teacher series written by author Sheffield is comprised of a total of 10 books, which were released between the years 2007 and 2015. Its debut book is entitled ‘Teacher Teacher!’. It was released by the Corgi publishers in the year 2007. The book features the lead characters in the roles of Jack Sheffield, Ruby, Beth Henderson, and several others, and the plot takes place in North Yorkshire. At the start of the book’s story, it is depicted that the year is 1977 and professor Jack gets appointed as a small primary school’s headmaster. With this job begins the eventful journey of Jack. Throughout the school year he makes numerous attempts at overcoming the various problems that he faces as an inexperienced and young headmaster. To make the journey even more eventful, Jack is joined by other colorful characters like Ruby, who is a stone caretaker and has a problem with spellings. There is a secretary, who is a hardcore fan of Margaret Thatcher. The other important characters include a villager growing giant carrots, a parent/barmaid having the habit of requesting sex lessons, a 5 year old boy with extremely colorful language, etc. Jack gets attracted to the bright and beautiful Beth Henderson and finds her irresistible. The plot moves along in a nostalgic and funny way and keeps the readers entertained throughout the prose.

The next installment is called ‘Mister Teacher’. It was also published by Corgi in 2008. Author Sheffield has depicted the same characters in this novel as in the previous one. At the beginning of the story of the book, it is shown that Jack continues to be the headmaster of the primary school for the 2nd year in 1978. One day, he receives three letters, one of them brings a smile on his face, the other brings sadness, and the third one changes Jack’s life forever. The latter is sent from a 9 year old boy named Sebastian, who has leukemia and is undergoing treatment at a hospital. Sebastian addresses the heartbreaking letter to Jack as Mister Teacher. Jack becomes very emotional after receiving the letter and attempts to help. He starts an emotional journey through Yorkshire’s seasons, making the school its community’s natural center. Jack is accompanied during the ups & downs by a colorful set of characters. These include Vera, Ruby, Dorothy, Julie Andrews, Laura, and Beth Henderson. All these characters support Jack on his emotional journey and make it a memorable one for both Jack and Sebastian. This book succeeded in finding many readers. It became immensely successful just like the first novel. The novel was able to sell thousands of copies in print, thereby becoming an overall success for author Sheffield. It also succeeded in catching the eyes of various prominent authors and notable critics, who gave rave reviews and praised author Sheffield for his dedicated efforts in coming up with such a beautiful story. The positive comments and reviews boosted Sheffield’s confidence to a great extent and enabled him to write some more novels with Jack as the central character. And all of them also achieved tremendous successes.

    Read most of the books set in Ragley and have gone on to the books portraying earlier life. I sit reading the books and my laughter is interrupted by my wife asking “What has happened now?”. Invariably it begins “I remember when that happened to me” or “Do you remember when … happened?” I spent about 40 years teaching in Primary/Junior schools but in urban settings, however the laughs and tears were almost the same.
