Yasmine Galenorn has proven herself to be one of the best fictional writers of our time. Her best books are in The Otherworld series, which she started in 2006 and still continues to date. There are more than ten books published in this series so far, all of them being huge bestsellers. She captures her readers in her world of intense paranormal fantasy filled with intense plots. As you read, you feel like you are part of the story, while she takes you through complicated characters and completely borderless scenery. For lovers of novels these series is what you need. Each book drives you deeper into her world. Let’s look at some of the books in the series.
1.) Witchling #1
This is the first book in the Otherworld Series. Here, we meet Camille, Delilah and Menolly, the D’Artigo sisters. They are half faerie on their father’s side and half human on their mother’s. The book kicks off with Camille telling the story from her point of view. She is a witch. But since she is half human, she always has trouble with her spells and just can’t seem to get them right. Her sisters have troubles of their own, with Delilah being a were-cat who can’t control her transformations. Menolly, on the other hand is a vampire who’s yet to get used to her undead state.
They work for the Otherworld Intelligence Agency (OIA) which is their version of the FBI or CIA. Their job is to keep things smooth between humans and the other supernaturals. Their lives get a lot harder when the demons of the Subterranean world go on a murder rampage on Earth while at the same time, their home is on the verge of civil strife, leaving them in the middle.
These events end up complicating their already mixed up personal lives. Apparently, Camille has three men in her life, all of the m supernaturals. First there’s Trillian who is a dark fae. Then there’s Smoky, who turns into a dragon and lastly Morio, a Japanese fox demon called kitsune. Delilah seems to be the most mature. She is independent and has fallen in love with Shade, a half shadow dragon and half shadow walker. Well, Menolly is the youngest of the three. She was an expert spy before she was involuntarily turned into a vampire.
Her ordeal with her captor, who tortured and defiled her before turning her, has left her with a scarred personality. She still seems to be traumatised. As the three sisters go about saving the world, Yasmine takes us through their personal lives as they cope through the usual sibling rivalry, entwined with their complex relationships. Theirs is a constant battle of obligation to their jobs while at the same time, trying to fit in with the rest of the world.
With all these different personalities, Yasmine puts strict attention to detail and lets the reader glide in the storyline. As you read, you become part of their lives and feel like you are one of the many characters. Her descriptions are vivid and there is not a single shred of inconsistency in her work.
2.) Changeling #2
Published in 2008, this is the second book in the Otherworld series and like its predecessor, it will carry you off into a world of mystery and fast paced imagination.
Here, we see the story from Delilah’s point of view. She is a shapeshifter. A werecat, to be precise. But she doesn’t turn in to a large ferocious member of the cat family. When she transforms, she actually turns into a tabby cat. Her transformations always catch her unawares because she doesn’t know how to control them, and she changes every time she is excited or feeling stressed. She has a soft personality and thinks a lot before she does anything. They are thrown back into the spotlight when they start to look into a series of recent murders in one of the local tribes.
Delilah works for the OIA but covertly. Her day job poses her as a private investigator which works in favour of the OIA when it comes to gathering intelligence. Her services are hired by Zachary Lyonesse, a werepuma whose pride has lost some its members. He appears to be confident in the fact that Delilah is half faerie, giving her an added advantage. She turns to her sisters for help and as expected, the situation is a lot more complicated than they thought.
As the sisters track down the killers, Delilah develops a strong attraction to Zachary, despite the fact that she is already in a relationship with Chase, her human boyfriend. In the course of their investigation, they conclude that the murders are linked to some form of dark magic and that their own lives could be in danger. After a short while, they discover that The Hunters Moon Clan is responsible for the murders.
As if the challenge wasn’t hard enough, The Hunters Moon Clan are a band of werespiders. The sisters now learn that they had totally underestimated their enemy. The clan was together with some powerful demons whose primary goal was to take over both Earth and the Otherworld. Amidst all the confusion, Delilah discovers a new power she never knew she had and works on learning how to control it.
Changeling also lets us have a peek at the sisters’ sexual lives. Their half human half faerie nature means that they really don’t have to be monogamous. They are portrayed as girls who enjoy the occasional naughty indulgence but are also serious about the role they play in society.
Only after reading this book will you get to understand the vastness of these worlds. Yasmine takes you through creatures of every kind. From faerie, to demons and shapeshifters, the sheer diversity is almost incomprehensible. But it is just enough to keep you glued as you flip page after page of this wonderful book. All the different shapeshifters have their own society with their own rules. Their behaviour and reaction varies with where they are. Yasmine has done it again with Changeling. She is undoubtedly the queen of paranormal fiction.
