Jillian Hart is an American author best known for the writing of popular contemporary Christian romance novels. Over the years, Hart has written numerous novels in her The McKaslin Clan series, Granger Family Ranch, Buttons & Bobbins, Dry Creek Historical and McPhee Clan among several other series. Her McKaslin series of novels has been the most successful of her series. Jillian grew up in Washington State, where her family had a home on the outskirts of Carnation City. As a teenager, she asserts that she took care of the family’s cattle and use the proceeds to pay her college tuition. However, it was also a fun time for the budding author, who spent a lot of time scribbling short stories and riding horses on the Cascade Mountain range when she was not otherwise engaged. She got her Bachelors in English from Whitman College before she embarked on traveling the world, volunteering, a job in advertising, and teaching Sunday school, before she decided to settle down and become a professional author. When she is not penning her next bestseller, she can be found enjoying quality time with her family, drinking coffee with a book, or chatting with friends.
Jillian Hart first knew she was born to write when she found herself penning stories from when she was in grade school. Before that, she had been told that she had one day been caught telling her two year old self stories in her crib. She would write her first serious literature when she was in the fifth grade and the teacher gave an assignments to the class. She wrote her story about “Murphy the Martian” that had a pesky little brother, and a purple and green flying saucer. She had so much fun writing her narrative that from then on she kept adding to the story, that would become the first chapter of her later published novel “Murphy’s Adventures”. However, just like many authors, her journey to publication was full of rejection for the most part of six years, where she was writing almost every day. It was not until she got a revision letter for some manuscript she submitted from Harlequin Historicals, that she knew she finally knew her dream would become true after all.
Most of Hart’s writing is derived from a busy imagination and sensory acuity that have made it easy for her to pluck stories almost out of thin air. In addition, she may sometimes include a few of her experiences into the novels. For instance, a cat in Holiday Cat belonging to the lead protagonist Lucy is named Bean, similar to a cat that Jillian Hart once had as a child. She spices things up with tongue in cheek puns such as “Where have you bean?’ which makes for quite some fun reading. Her earlier childhood also influences a lot of the setting and some characters in the novels of the McKaslin Clan and the Granger Family Ranch series of novels. For instance, her novels will often have small town experiences, activities, and nuances, including the values of working with animals she obtained while living in the country and taking care of cattle. Nonetheless, her biggest motivation for writing is to put her emotions on paper, to feel the love and be totally consumed by it.
The McKaslin Clan series of novels are wonderful stories with endearing characters. The novels deal with a range of issues ranging from prejudice, love, and values among other themes. Even as these are contemporary Christian fiction, they do not sound preachy as Jillian Hart for the most part focuses on experiences. The novels are all about becoming an honest and successful person that experiences love and community despite the circumstances. This often involves stepping outside of one’s comfort zone and doing what may be deemed out of the ordinary. The McKaslin characters and their romantic partners and interests are swoon worthy heroes and heroines that are so down to earth that one feels that they are almost like friends. They are persons full of guilt, hurt, and pain which has made them feel that they are not worthy of love. Even as they initially try to resist love, it eventually finds them and helps them overcome their feelings of guilt and helplessness and enjoy love as never before.
“His Hometown Girl” is the first novel of The McKaslin Clan series of novels by Jillian Hart. The lead in the novel is Zachary Drake, a longtime friend of the beautiful Karen McKaslin. Karen has just called off her engagement to a local pastor but Zach has no illusions of making her his. Instead, he hopes to keep his love for her a secret even as he provides a sympathetic ear and grease stained hand to a friend in need. Karen is thanking her lucky stars for having dodged a loveless marriage, and has plans of transforming herself in preparation for a man worthy of her love. She never thought that the man could have been right in front of her the whole time, hoping that she would see the longing he had for her in his eyes. Jillian writes a great Christian romance that succeeds in not being overly pushy about values and morals, but still reflecting her Christian values.
“The Sweetest Gift” is an endearing novel of The McKaslin Clan series of novels featuring Kirby MacKaslin and her seeming obnoxious and brazen neighbor. The new neighbor is a pilot that Kirby instantly disliked from the moment she saw him. But the man turns out to be completely different to what she had thought him to be. He wakes up to him fixing her fence and running off to fly an early morning flight because of a medical emergency. Even sweeter of him, he offers to cook dinner and make her cocoa when she has a bout of insomnia. She is not surprised to find herself falling for the endearing man as his firm hold on her hand makes her feel so comfortable. But after showing her just what warmth, love and kindness he could provide, he withdraws his hand, afraid of wounding his broken heart that was yet to heal. Can Kirby convince the man to move past his pain and love again, or is he lost forever in the depths of despair and hopelessness. Using internal monologue and excellent descriptions, Hart writes a cute love story that would make a good read for the beach or fireside.
