Keziah Frost is American author of humor, fiction, and comedy. Keziah always wanted to write novels since she was in grade school and just like the path of her main character, Norbert, who becomes a fortune teller, aged 73 after retiring as an accountant, Keziah life took the same winding road towards writing. Her mother was an astrologist did palmistry, card reading, and so Keziah grew up learning all these things.

Keziah Frost became a published author in 2018 when her debut novel, The Reluctant Fortune-Teller her debut novel was published.

The Reluctant Fortune-Teller

The Reluctant Fortune Teller is a coming of age story about a 73-year old retired accountant finally feeling visible to the whole world after he learns to read people’s card.

The story introduces readers to a man named Norbert Zelenka, a man who has always lived on the sidelines, unnoticed by the society, and this is how at 73 he finds himself bankrupt and alone except for the company of Chihuahua. However, when Carlotta’s Club- a group of three strong-willed elders with a knack for dram and plenty of time to waste- decide to make Norbert their project, he hesitantly agrees to their plan. But with their support, Norbert soon establishes himself as the local town’s fortune teller and finds his solitary life changing in unexpected ways.

But it turns out that after many years of observing other people lives’ make Norbert a great fortune teller and people from different walks of life begin seeking his advice. Norbert’s lonesome world begins expanding with new found self-confidence and friendships which leads him to find a place in the society where belongs finally. However, trouble looms on around the corner, when a perturbed young lady vanishes into thin air after a wrong reading. Now Norbert must find strength far beyond the fortune telling cards and bring the missing woman back home.

The Reluctant Fortune-Teller is a wonderful story of loneliness, friendship, and coming of age late in life. It is a good remainder of that we are never too old to learn new tricks. Norbert Zelenka, the main character in the story has a decent backstory. He is an orphan and was raised by his kooky aunt, and he relies on his love of math to become an accountant. He gets conned severally out of his savings by some of his relatives, then loses his beloved wife of five years to chances, and he retires with only his dead aunt for the company.

Carlotta, once the local town’s master of social status sees our main character as the perfect fall guy. She and her club, now reduced to two decide to revive their hobbies and teach Norbert the art of fortune telling using cards and working out of a café Norbert can cash in money for himself and the niece to keep the club in gossip about townies and tourist alike.

Challenges arise, first Norbert seems more stubborn than Carlotta had anticipated and he won’t follow her commands. Secondly, Norbert befriends all Carlotta’s friends as well as Carlotta’s old enemy, Edith who now runs the New Age retreat center. Lastly, Norbert is very talented at fortune telling, probably due to his observant nature, or his years if reading Dear Abby and Reader’s Digest or probably because he is a little psychic as his aunt always claimed.

Despite the novel’s title, the main character Norbert is never reluctant, but there is a big gap between Norbert’s stories. For example two months he spends learning the art of fortune-telling, and the days following three bad readings. There is no other notable character in the story. All the female characters are either happily divorced, happily widowed, happily never married in the first place, or being in a poorly treated by their boyfriends.
