A very popular book of the DI Matt Barnes series written by author Michael Kerr is entitled ‘Lethal Intent’. It was released by the Head Nook publishers in the year 2013. The central characters of this book are shown as Matt Barnes, Ray Preston, Beth Holder, etc. At the start of this book’s story, it is shown that Matt Barnes recovers from the serious injuries that he had sustained on his previous mission and is now hoping to take his relationship with Dr. Beth Holder a step forward. Beth specializes in criminal psychology and she brings a new case to Matt Barnes that involves a homicidal sociopath. Beth and Matt learn about the abduction of the 13 year old daughter of the DS Ray Preston. They begin to reach out to all of their resources to look for the unknown kidnapper. The reason behind the kidnapping is suspected to be a grudge held by the kidnapper against Preston. Later, it is discovered that the abductor has an agenda of his. He wants to avenge a justice travesty perceived by him. The lethal intent of the perpetrator is to physically and psychologically destroy the ones that he believes are guilty for his loss. No matter how hard Matt Barnes, his team, and Beth Holder try to catch the sociopath, he always seems to be a step ahead of them. In this ultimate game, the sociopath turns into a nightmare for the police. Matt feels that the culprit is a different kind of criminal. He seems to enjoy the game of cat and mouse, and likes to face them instead of running away from them. Beth Holder and Matt Barnes continue their search for the killer and soon realize that he is trying to hunt them down instead of the other way round. If they do not stop this psychopath killer in time, many more people are going to turn up dead.
Another well written novel of this thriller series is called ‘A Need to Kill’. The Head Nook publication released this book too in 2014. Kerr has depicted the main characters in the book’s story as Marsha Freeman, Trudi Jameson, Beth Holder, Matt Barnes, and several other. At the beginning of the story of the book, it is depicted that Marsha Freeman’s dead body is found in a lock-up in Putney. A former model, Marsha is known by her professional name Trudi Jameson. The investigators find that Marsha was beaten brutally, burned many times with cigarettes, and then strangled to death. Lately, Marsha had turned into a high class prostitute and was involved in providing her services to rich clients, including famous celebrities, captains, and politicians. What the investigators are not able to understand is why the killer tore away 3 pages from Marsha’s address book? As the murder of Marsha Freeman had the same modus operandi as a previous case handled by the Serious Crime Unit, her case is also handed over to them. The common link between the two cases is that both victims were redheads and prostitutes. Matt starts working on this case and hardly finds any time to spend with Beth Holder. Because of this, their relationship as lovers begins to get strained. Beth looks worried about Matt’s fanatical dedication towards his work alone and so she takes some time off while visiting New York for seminar to think about her relationship with Barnes. On the other hand, Matt starts interviewing Marsha’s clients through her address book and tries to narrow down the killer with each clue that he finds. Matt is sure that the killer will strike again and he is all set to catch him when he attempts to do so.
