Born and raised in Dublin, the future writer to be Caimh McDonnell would grow up with a strong interest in comedy and the written word, something that he would nurture in the following years to come. This would develop over time, leading to him honing and refining his voice upon the stand-up circuit, something which would see him build upon his voice, as well as articulate his personality and style. Writing Career
It would be in 2016 that he Caimh McDonnell would bring out his first novel, with the title ‘A Man With One of Those Faces’. This book would also come to be the first in his ongoing series of novels titled the ‘Dublin Trilogy’, of which there are four of so far and counting. Not showing signs of stopping anytime soon either, he will continue to grow as an author, as he his writing will leave a legacy that will be appreciated for a long time to come.
Angels in the Moonlight
Initially coming out through the ‘McFori Ink’ publishing label, this first came out in 2017 on the 30th of August to much acclaim. Setting up the third title to be released in the ‘Dublin Trilogy’, it actually works as a prequel to the other titles, giving an insight into the past of its leading character. It also manages to develop on him as a person, along with the world that he is inhabiting, building upon the atmosphere and overall ambiance.
Working chronologically as a prequel to the first, this manages to pick up on a number of themes and ideas that have already been laid out in the series. Already knowing the characters, this manages to bring the readers in to the past of Detective Bunny McGarry, thus developing him as a character. Taking place in Dublin as well, this is familiar territory to McDonnell as an author, as he manages to bring the city to life in full glorious color, with it almost becoming a character in its own right as the series itself progresses.
Set in 1999, this sees Bunny McGarry as one of the most feared detectives within the criminal underworld, having brought a score of criminals to justice. Now he has a chance to do the same for one of Ireland’s most notorious armed robbery gangs, as he aims to bring them down finally once and for all. That’s when Simone turns up, as it appears that Bunny’s feelings for her could potentially cloud his judgement, as he must choose between justice and protecting those he loves. Will he make the right choice? What is the right choice? Where are the angels in the moonlight?
Last Orders
Released through the ‘McFori Ink’ publishing label once more, this continue on chronologically from the previous two titles in the ‘Dublin Trilogy’, as well as the prequel too. Following on in much the same vein as before, this was originally brought out on the 3rd of March in 2018, taking the series and the world forwards. It also manages to create a style and tone of its own too, developing the overall world in the process, whilst taking the series forwards as a whole.
Learning that a rival investigations agency may have played a pivotal role in shaping a certain incident in his past, Paul seems to have a potential vendetta on his hands. Dragging his own MCM Investigations into a blood feud, it looks like he could tear everything down, something that is also upsetting Brigit in the process. That’s when Bunny McGarry discovers bodies located up in the Wicklow Mountains, leading him on a path that could also lead to certain doom. Will they be able to keep their heads above water? Who is behind it all? What are the last orders?

I found this series by accident and cannot get enough. My favorite so far is “Firewater Blues” due to the character “Deccie” playing such a crucial part. Great entertainment, lots of laughs when “Bunny” and “Deccie” are together.
Just an incredibly enjoyable series – and the other ‘series’ and individual stories are all examples of the best in entertaining reading.
Can’t wait for more from this guy – his work is amazing!
I just finished the entire series, reading the prequel first (highly recommended). McDonnell’s is a refreshingly cynical voice topped with a fair bit of sentimentality to completely soften the almost Nordic darkness.
