Deborah Raney is an American author that writes Christian fiction. Raney came to fame with ‘A Vow to Cherish’, her first novel which was adapted into a television film.

+Biography

Deborah Raney was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1955. She spent her childhood on a farm. The writing bug bit her pretty early on, and she remembers making the decision to become a writer.

The author eventually made that dream a reality, winning accolades like the RITA Award and the National Reader’s Choice Award. The author’s path to that success wasn’t so straightforward, though.

Raney’s desire to write was ignited when she encountered ‘Little House on the Prairie’, a series of novels written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. A student of Lyons High School in Kansas, Raney’s desire to pursue publishing followed her all her life.

But it took 25 years for her to actually sit down and write. At first, she was preoccupied with her studies (Emporia State University and Kansas State University). Then her family came into the picture.

Deborah Raney and her husband met in 1973. They had both just become born-again Christians and the occurrence had led them both to exit their long-term relationships. Raney was in high school when they met.

And by the time their relationship began to take shape, they had enrolled in different colleges. However, that did not stop them from pursuing what they perceived to be a bright future with one another.

They initially communicated on a regular basis via mail. And when the opportunity arose, they would visit one another. They got married a year later and Raney followed her husband to New York where he sought work in illustration.

Raney had been assured earlier in life that she did not have the capacity to have children. As such, the author was quite shocked to learn that she was pregnant some years later.

The revelation compelled the couple to move to Kansas where their family members were situated. When her first child was finally born, Raney, who previously worked in a nursing home, decided to stay at home.

And it was in that position that the author stayed for the years that her children were growing up. The family had to make financial sacrifices for Raney to be a stay-at-home mom.

But they thrived regardless, and Raney knew that she would have to return to work once her children started college; her husband was going to need help paying tuition.

The family thought they had everything worked out. There oldest was approaching his college years and Raney was already making preparations to go back to work. No one was more surprised than her when their family of three children received a late addition.

Suddenly Deborah Raney had a new baby on her hands who was going to keep her home for several more years. The situation seemed desperate at the time and the family had no idea how they were going to cope.

It was around that time that Raney began to write. She didn’t expect to succeed on any significant level. But she assumed she would make enough money to help the family make ends meet.

The author believes it was a miracle that the idea of ‘A Vow to Cherish’ came to her in those days. Inspired by her time at the Nursing Home in New York, the advance Deborah Raney got for the book was the exact amount of money they needed to put their oldest son through college for four years.

Raney took it as a sign that she had finally found her calling, and she proceeded to churn out additional novels. The author has said that her spouse’s career as an illustrator has made them the perfect husband/wife combination.

Ken, the husband, understands Raney in a way that most uncreative individuals never could. He is patient with her, giving her the space she needs to generate new ideas and even participating in the silly little games she plays when brainstorming.

The author gets most of her writing done from home. She still has to balance her duties as a stay-at-home wife with her writing. That typically means she has to get all the cleaning and cooking around the house done before she can sit down to write.

Despite the challenges and workloads that can sometimes arise, Deborah Raney always meets her deadlines. Though, there are times when she becomes overwhelmed. In those cases, she will abandon her housework and flee to a café for a few hours to get her writing done.

The author’s novels tell simple stories that explore the themes of love, loss, and family. Christian messages are sprinkled throughout the novels.

Raney’s first novel was turned into a television movie by World Wide Pictures in 1999. The adaptation was pretty popular and found legs in international markets.

+Home to Chicory Lane

Audrey Whitman thought she was finally ready to enjoy her golden years. She had spent years raising her children, but now they were out of the house. So nothing could stop her and her husband from transforming their house into a cozy bed and breakfast, or so she thought.

Audrey begins to spot the signs of trouble when her daughter Landyn suddenly comes home, dragging all her possessions behind her. Audrey thought her daughter was doing well enough in New York.

But now she has come back home without her husband. The Inn’s opening weekend is fast approaching and Audrey doesn’t know if she can deal with all the uncertainty. She cannot abandon her daughter at such a difficult time, but Audrey is just as determined to make her dream a reality.

+Two Roads Home

Audrey and Grant are still struggling to make their debut into the world of innkeeping a successful one. But problems won’t stop haunting them. This time it’s Jesse Pennington, their son-in-law, that’s causing all the trouble.

Jesse has always had a friendly personality and it has served him well. So he is more than a little perturbed when a harassment charge comes his way. Now Jesse’s marriage is in trouble and he doesn’t know if he has what it takes to pursue the dreams in his heart.
