Writing from her home in southern Connecticut, the American author Christi Caldwell is well known for creating historical romance novels that resonate well with her audience. Telling period pieces, she manages to evoke a seemingly long forgotten era, making it come alive off of the page and feel as if it could’ve taken place only yesterday. This gives her stories a timeless quality that really manages to give them their universal appeal that’s been drawing in readers from all across the globe. Not only that, but she is also well known for doing her research, ensuring a large degree of accuracy is present throughout her stories. Creating romance titles she brings her characters to life with love stories that could’ve taken place at any time, with them being very real and very human tales, as she really gets to the heart of her subject at hand, thus providing the readers with what they’re looking for. Knowing exactly what it is that they want, she appeals to a wide range of readers, whilst simultaneously writing with a large degree of passion that is undeniably present throughout her work. Loving crafting heroes and heroines that at once seem otherworldly, yet very real and down-to-earth at the same time, she works at giving them imperfections that the readers will feel that they can relate too.

Giving them a series of challenges and hurdles to overcome, she ensures that the end goal is all the more satisfying when it finally comes at the conclusion. Managing this over her many series too, she is also well known for creating franchises that really evoke a period of time that many readers would otherwise not know much about. This then invites them to learn more on the subject at hand and get involved with the period of history being portrayed within the books. One series that really exemplifies this is that of her much loved and highly appreciated ‘Heart of a Duke’ series of novels, which all use a historical setting for this collection of romance novels. Set around the theme of dukes throughout history, it looks at their love-lives, all whilst paying extreme attention to detail at each and every point. Loosely connected by family ties and names, each book works ostensibly on its own, allowing the reader to essentially dive in. Providing a sense of escapism as well as history, each books focuses on a particular affair or relationship, sometimes with highly charged and steamy results.

This is a series that has come a long way in a relatively short amount of time, with a lot of entries being released over a few years. Starting out in 2014, it’s continued for over fifteen books and counting, with the last one being published in 2017, thus establishing a long and expansive history. As well as that, there is also a prequel novella set before the very first novel, as it gives some backstory to what comes after, this one being released in 2014 as a shorter title.

For Love of the Duke

Published through her own publishing outlet, this title came out through the ‘Christi Caldwell Publications’ label. This then allowed her to full control over the production, thus ensuring it was very much her own work and ideas. Brought out on the 9th of October in 2014, this would also see the ‘Heart of a Duke’ series start overall as well.

With classic themes of love and passion, this really is a novel that wears its heart on its sleeve, allowing the time of dukes and earls to come alive. The characters themselves are also well drawn, giving a prime juxtaposition to the rich and luxurious surroundings set about them. Using her locations well too, Caldwell really paints a rich and vivid world as well, allowing it to come alive in full color.

The 8th Duke of Bainbridge Jasper is busy mourning his recently departed wife, as he has been hiding himself away for quite some time, that is until he’s coaxed out to attend the Frost Fair. It is during this fair that he meets none other than Lady Katherine Adamson, as the two of them begin to change each others lives irrevocably for good. With her own father having passed as well, Lady Katherine Adamson is adamant on not meeting any men, which is why her attraction to Jasper comes as such a surprise. Will they overcome their trauma? Can they heal each other’s hearts? What will they do for love of the duke?

More Than a Duke

Published by Christi Caldwell herself again, this would continue on from the last title with another romance in the ‘Heart of a Duke’ series. Published on the 2nd of January in 2015, this carries on in much the same manner as before. That’s not to say that there aren’t plenty of twists and turns though, as it really keeps the reader on the edge-of-their-seats throughout.

Facing the judgement of those around her, Lady Anne Adamson is seen as nothing more than a pretty face, as those around her don’t take her all to seriously. Determined to prove them all wrong, she aims to marry someone respectable and who is will be nothing like her own philandering father who dropped their family into poverty. With the help of the 6th Earl of Stanhope Harry, she sees him as nothing more than a scoundrel, but a charming one that can help her seduce and wed a respectable duke nonetheless. Will they find themselves sharing a passion for one another though? Can they overcome their differences and their pasts? Who will they find more than a duke?

The Heart of a Duke Series

A series that clearly knows and understands what it’s about, this is a collection of novels that really has fun with its premise, whilst also remaining true to the spirit of the time it’s portraying. Creating a world that’s both accurate and engaging, Caldwell allows the characters to speak for themselves, as she paints a realistic stage around them. Giving each of them enough room to breathe, she really draws her characters personalities out, allowing them to come alive off the page. With their timeless quality, this is one series that will live on for a long time yet, with more and more fans continuing to discover it every day.
