Publication Order of Everworld Books

Everworld is a series of fantasy novels written by a bestselling American author of children’s books and fiction, Katherine K.A. Applegate. Katherine began the publication of Everworld series in 1999 when Search for Senna the first novel in the series was published. The series lasted twelve novels concluding in 2001 when Mystify the Magician was published. The series features a cast of main characters. First, there is David Levin, a self-appointed leader of the main characters. He takes on all the burdens of his partners and has been haunted by his past in which he was cowardly, and therefore he must prove himself to be a man. Before getting into Everworld, he was in a relationship with Senna and thus he is more prone to Senna’s powers, but he shows his bravery and courage before Zeus and other gods. He fights using the blade of Galahad.

Other characters in the series include April O’Brien the heroine of the group and Senna’s half-sister, but their personalities is quite the opposite of each other, and the two hate each other’s passionately. April is a devoted Catholic and a feminist, and also very beautiful with green eyes and red hair. She is a member of a drama club back in her real world school, and she is often singing songs. Additionally, April takes responsibility for her burdens, and in most cases, she is the voice of reason next to Jalil.

Christopher Hitchcock is the unwilling clown of the group, and often makes jokes targeted towards the other members of the group, Jalil (racism), April (sexism) and David (antisemitism). He often makes these jokes to keep them at a distance so that they will not get to know him. According to his words, he is a man who is on the road to becoming an alcoholic just like his parents. However, he can be a caring and kind man at one time and the next minute be a jerk. He gave up the offer of becoming an immortal since he failed to save Ganymede, Zeus male lover.

Senna Wales is a witch who intertwines all the main characters. She is David’s girlfriend, and Christopher ex-fiancé and also April’s half-sister,( they have different mothers but same father) and has gray eyes and blond hair. Senna is the only protagonist with real magical power, and at the time she uses others for her own personal gains whether through magic or emotional manipulation. Her magic powers are much stronger when in the Everworld than back in the Old World. Her real name was Senda, meaning gateway but after her mother died, she started calling herself Senna based on her father’s mispronunciation.

Jalil Sherman is a scientist, and the only African-American character in the group and his mission is finding the software on which Everworld runs on. While in the real world, Jalil is an obsessive-compulsive howevere in Everworld he is unaffected. His disorder is, however, a secret to the other crew members for the greater part of the series. Yet Senna knows of Jalil condition and is able to cure it temporarily while the two are in the Old World, on a condition that he would serve her.

Search for Senna

Search for Senna is the debut novel in Everworld series by Katherine K.A. Applegate. The story is narrated by David Levin, the new kid in new kid in the school. He gets involved in a fight with Chris Hitchcock after he is spotted going out with his girlfriend, Sena Wales. Then, Jalil and Senna’s half-sister, April appeared in the fight scene, and this marks the point where the four characters first get together.

The next day, all the four characters are magically drawn to Senna, sitting next to a lake, and suddenly, without warning, all the five characters are drawn into a different world known as Everworld. Jalil, David, Christopher, and April wake up and find themselves taken prisoners by Loki the god who opened a portal into the Old World so that his son, Fenrir could bring Senna, whom he calls a witch to him. He reveals to them that he intended to use her as a gateway to the old world. After Loki discovers that the four cannot be of any help to him, he orders for their death, but David’s great skills facilitate their escape with a sword and the laws of the universe such as acceleration not working as they would in the Old World.

The group seeks refuge in a Viking camp disguising themselves as minstrels and is housed by Olaf Iron foot the Vikings leader who is defiance just like Loki. The Vikings sail away alongside with Christopher, David, April, and Jalil against the heart-eating god, Huitzilopochtli and the Vikings inform that Loki would release their god, and the ransom being Huitzilopochtli.

Land of Loss

Land of the Loss, the second novel in Everworld series by Katherine K.A. Applegate opens up with a big battle between the Aztecs and Vikings, and it is through this battle that readers get a glimpse of what the Aztecs do to the people they capture in battle. Just like in the debut novel, the second novel is again brilliantly woven, with interesting characters. Additionally, we get to have a glimpse at how Christopher’s minds work and how weird and his humor can be.

Overall, the novel continues the habit of the debut novel which is to keep on introducing new facets to this world. The protagonists travel back and forth between the two worlds (Everworld and the Old World) and its through constant shifting that more characters are introduced, and we also get to know more about the main characters. The gods nearly share similar characteristics, such as physical perfection, shape-shifting, immortality and superhuman strength. They can only be killed by weapons of the other gods such as Thor’s hammer, or through a severe injury. Many of the gods have special abilities related to their field of work, and others are radically more powerful than others. However, nearly all the gods are portrayed as being cruel and are cold in their attitude towards humans.
