Ashley & JaQuavis is the writing team of Ashley Antoinette and JaQuavis Coleman, the youngest African American authors to make the New York Times and Publishers Weekly bestselling lists twice. The writing duo made their name when they were aged only seventeen, when they were discovered by Carl Weber, a New York Times bestselling writer. It was during their college years as freshmen that they both got publishing deals from independent publishing houses and began publishing novels individually and later as Ashley & JaQuavis. “The Cartel” that was published in 2009 was their breakout novel as it turned out to be a smash hit setting the two up as some of the best novelists in the street literature fiction genre. As Ashley and JaQuavis they have written more than twenty blockbusters that continue to thrall their fans across the globe. They have been featured on many prestigious magazines that include the likes of Don Diva, King, XXL, Vibe, and Essence. Setting a precedent in the genre, the two authors jointly signed a book deal with Cash Money Records, which is the publisher of their “Murderville” series of novels. Due to the massive popularity of their novels, they have landed themselves a movie adaptation of one of their novels, which has been optioned by Warner Bros and NBC.
The collaboration of Jaquavis and Ashley came about almost by accident. Both authors had loved books as teenagers, with JaQuavis a big fan of “Atlas Shrugged” by Richard Wright and the likes of Shakespeare, while Ashley preferred John Grisham and Judy Blume. In fact their first official date was at a bookstore where Ashley purchased the novel “Sister Souljah” a novel believed to the pioneer book of the street literature genre. They were seventeen years old freshmen when Ashley became bedridden after terminating an ectopic pregnancy. To get her spirits up while she lay in bed for nearly a month, JaQuavis challenged her to beat him in a writing contest. He just said to her “I bet you could never write a better book than me”. As a very competitive girl, she accepted the challenge with the winner set to win $500. A week later, both had written three chapters and they switched. In a few weeks, they had written “Dirty Money” their first novel which they would later sell to Carl Weber founded independent publishing house, Urban Books. They were still students at this time and JaQuavis made most of his money selling drugs. In fact, much of the “Dirty Money” story is inspired by an experience he had with the police when he was nearly busted dealing drugs. When they got the call telling them that the publisher loved their book, they thought they had it made and dumped $10,000 worth of coke into the toilet. They would later find out that their advance was only a meager $4000.
The appeal of the Ashley & JaQuavis novels is easy to understand. They write taut and formulaic novels that deliver the story in an exuberant and efficient manner. The novels convey their messages in a profane, tangy, and slangy voice full of violence and sex to enthrall their readers. In their novels the characters get their cap twisted, they are laid out or popped rather than murdered. The tension and suspense is constant with the narrative emphasizing the olfactory, sticky, and earthy elements. These include superlative sex skills, heroic carnal achievements, and shuddering orgasms all of which are delivered in the punchy patois the duo have made their trademark. For instance, in their first bestselling novel “The Cartel”, they tell of a Miami based drug ring, where the scene is described as a crack workshop set in a decrepit housing project. One is met with teams of women dressed only in hospital masks working round a wooden table cutting up coke. The nostrils are stung by the stinging scent of baking soda and cocaine and the naked bodies of the teams of women working to process the coke. They are written in a noir tone with a dark subject matter full of gory and lewd details, even if the mood always remains high spirited.
“The Cartel” is the first explosive novel of “The Cartel” series of novels by Ashley & JaQuavis. The novel is set in Miami, where a drug cartel makes millions of dollars every year, dealing in Cocaine. The Diamond family is one of the most influential families in the cartel, but everything changes when their leader dies. Carter Diamond had been one of the most ruthless of gangsters and he leaves behind a secret, a daughter, twin sons, and a wife. The secret is that the man had had an illegitimate son known as Jones Carter, who drives into town to claim his inheritance after learning of the death of his father. Meanwhile, the Murder Mamas a group of contract killers led by the beautiful Miamor has been hired to take down the now vulnerable Cartel. But the Mamas are no match for The Cartel as they lose one of their own in the process. Miamor the leader is determined to make the Cartel pay for taking down one of their own. She unknowingly meets with Carter Jones the son of the dead leader of The Cartel who steals her heart. She soon learns who she is sleeping with but is now torn between revenge and love. They are in opposing teams and live different lifestyles which will collide for one of the most explosive of endings.
In “Tale of the Murda Mamas” Miamor makes a comeback as the reader gets to learn of her background and how she came to be a contract killer. The story tells of the reason she fell so hard for her enemy Jones Carter, and the reason she is so coldhearted and ruthless. Murder the capable, confident and protective leader of the Murda Mamas shows her motherly nature as she protects her crew from all manner of danger and provides for them. The novel also references Mecca the little insane character with a terrible secret about Monroe his twin brother and a twisted tale that could end in all manner of unpredictable fashion. Dealing with romance, the novel also tells the story of Zyir and Breeze who find themselves heartbroken and unable to love each other due to circumstances outside their control. The novel also reintroduces the love story between Miamor and Carter. It portrays the bruised and broken Miamor who finds comfort from the love of Carter Jones as they finally reveal who they really are and accept each other.

I have a question is there a Carter Diamond book 3 I read Part 1 and Part 2, but was throw off by the Book 1 of the Cartel it didn’t match what was in part 2 Carter Diamond , Sam was Murder , but in the cartel book 1 it was said that he was Kidnapped and Murder Don’t get me wrong book 1 Cartel is good but it threw me off because I was looking for it to coincide with the prequel books of Carter Diamond Before the Cartel he stood alone Part 1 and Part 2 so let me start on Book 2 of the Cartel it’s said that book 2 doesn’t coincide with book 1 but I will see. Thanks for listening
There is only part 1 and 2 for the Carter Diamond series.
There is a part three to Carter Diamond however it’s been completely removed from purchasing. I heard there would be a rerelease of all three books in 1 but that’s been some time ago. I have part three on Kindle but 1 and 2 on audio.
