Catherine Asaro is an American scientist and scholar who also writes science fiction and fantasy. Asaro is best known for the Saga of the Skolian Empire novels.

Catherine Asaro is one of those rare scholars that refused to let her numerous certifications in the areas of physics, chemistry and chemical physics keep her from her desire to produce fiction.

If anything, Catherine has shown an uncanny ability to use her doctorate to bring a grounded edge to the arena of science fiction and fantasy.

The author was born in 1955 in Oakland, California, though most of her childhood was spent in El Cerrito. A student of Kennedy High School in Richmond, the author eventually went to and left UCLA with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry.

And if that wasn’t impressive enough, Catherine proceeded to attend Harvard University where she acquired a Masters in Physics and a Ph.D. in Chemical Physics.

The author has made effective use of her skills in the education sector. When she isn’t on the road attending conventions and talking to her fans, the author can be found teaching math, physics, and chemistry in a variety of settings.

Over the years, she has availed her services to public and private students, sometimes extending her tutelage to homeschooling programs.

Catherine actually started out in the arts. She was a pretty proficient ballet dancer and pianist before she even hit her teens. She also loved to read fiction. The author had her sights set on a dance major at UCLA.

Everything changed when Catherine discovered math and science. Because she hadn’t given the subjects much thought in high school, they confused her immensely. There were times when she had absolutely no clue what her teachers were saying.

But then, one day, she read a chapter on quantum theory in a book and it hooked her. Catherine’s love for physics was sparked. The more she read the more she wanted to know.

One thing led to another and the author eventually got her Ph.D. Even with the rigors of her math and science courses at University, Catherine never stopped dancing. Both the sciences and the arts had their hooks in her and she pursued them with a lot of fervor.

And it only made sense that she would eventually blend those two elements together to produce fiction. The author looks at her stories like problems that must be solved, no different from any other math equation.

The author started out writing short fiction that appeared in magazines and anthologies. She was nominated for various awards as a result. She eventually graduated to full-length novels of which the Saga of the Skolian Empire series is the most popular.

Because of her scholarly background, Catherine Asaro tends to write hard science fiction. Her books feature sophisticated scientific concepts. She has been known to throw equations and diagrams into the mix.

The author’s fans appreciate her work because her ideas feel like they could become a reality in the near future. Catherine endeavors to create a fine balance between the story and the science of her books.

She is well aware that not all her readers understand science like her. As such, she works hard to not overwhelm them.

Catherine exported her creative skills to the music arena in 2009 when she collaborated with a rock band called ‘Point Valid’ to create songs that would accompany her novels. Catherine did not know how to sing at the time so she had to take voice lessons.

The author is married to a NASA astrophysicist called John Kendall Cannizzo. They have a daughter.

Chime has known nothing but peace in the hamlet of Jacob’s Vale for as long as she can remember. Her life takes an unexpected turn when an advisor to the King of Aronsdale ventures out to identify shape-mages.

This advisor singles her out as a promising mage, a decision that sees Chime sent to Castle Suncroft where she will not only have her magecraft abilities defined but she will also marry Prince Muller.

Muller doesn’t want anything to do with Chime. He certainly doesn’t want his position as heir. For Muller, nothing is more important than fashion. Like Chime, Muller is thrown into the thick of things when his father dies and a rival kingdom uses that opportunity to strike.
