Malicious Intent
Malicious Intent is a gripping a powerful debut thriller of a series featuring a tough and remarkable private investigator, pathologist and a forensic expert Dr. Anya Crichton. As the only female freelancer in the male-dominated world, Anya will grab any work she can find to pay for child support, her mortgage and as well as get her business off the ground and battle her ex-husband for the custody of their three-year-old son. Things can change rapidly, especially when her expert forensic evidence is instrumental in winning high profile cases.
However, Anya’s investigation into a drug overdose case of a young Lebanese girl is raising complicated questions. Unforeseen coincidences between this sad and tragic death and a series of seemingly unrelated deaths that Anya is examining at the request of her friend, detective Kate Farrer, suggest that there is a deadly force at work in the shadows. With each forensic cut, Anya’s forensic prowess and deductive skills are pulling her harshly towards an evil plot and a shocking truth- and once she makes entry into the darkness, she might never see the light of the day again.
Anya’s mentorship and help are given to Kate get paid back in betrayals that instead of bringing an end to the case at one point- these deceptions also play a significant role in the death of one living witness. All the victims of the case seem to have these odd fibers shaped like tiny dumbbells on their lungs- a sign that they could have all committed suicide.
The first book in the series is a brilliant read, featuring a female investigator, Anya who finds herself caught in between tragic events. Not only does her professional life present dangers, but also her personal life brings forth its tragedies as well- she is only allowed to see her every two weeks and during the weekends only. Her ex-husband economics and career are also affected negatively by Anya’s role in various cases- and above all, they do not get along well or even agree to stick to the rules.
Without Consent
Dr. Anya Crichton is back again in another chilling puzzling case that will test her forensic skills to the limits. This time she is chasing lethal serial rapist- all the suspicions fall on Geoffrey Willard, a man released from Gaul- after serving a term for the rape and murder of a teenage girl. As the forensic pathologist digs deeper into the case- she begins to suspect the man everyone in the town thinks is guilty is innocent. Later when two rape victims are stabbed to death and blood-smeared shirt is the only key that could lead to the truth- and the serial killer knows that Anya has made one big mistake, one that could be dangerous.
Dr. Anya is not only a forensic pathologist but also helps treat those who have suffered sexual assaults. She is helping a patient and discovers some similarities to a previous case- at first, she suspects that the rapist is Geoffrey Willard- released from prison. As she investigates more, she encounters one of the most significant trauma’s she has ever faced- the evidence points out that Willard is innocent and it’s old colleges findings that put him in jail. The cops are convinced that Willard is the man responsible, but Anya believes that the man is innocent, and if she could be wrong- she could be setting a serial killer free. But the puzzle that Anya has to solve is, if Willard is not the killer, then who is?
The second book in the series is an exciting read. Kathryn Fox manages to lay out the details of this case without providing too many medical information. She has perfected the ability to craft medical info, and the story together makes it easier to understand. The author has also created a cast of suspects where it becomes both interchangeable and questionable as to who the actual offers is. All the men featured in the book have some aspects of their past and their present that make them fit for Anya’s list of suspects- thus keeps the readers guessing until the end. Some chapters are narrated from the different point of views- some are told from the perspective of the primary suspect- Willard. From his narration, you will be able to get a picture of his mental states and how he has managed to cope with social situations also known as the interaction with women.
Fox has created a real and believable heroine, Anya. She has a passion for her work, she is compassionate always willing to help- but above all her overall goal in life is to be a good mother. She is smart, strong, as well as respected in her profession even though she lost custody to her son, and she’s struggling to survive.
