Writing primarily science-fiction, American author David Weber has been successfully publishing for a number of years now. Living with his wife Sharon in Greenville, South Carolina, he has allowed his religion to inform much of his work. With a number of nominations and best-sellers, he continues to write to this day.

Early and Personal Life

Born on the 24th of October, 1952, David Mark Weber has made a successful living writing fantasy and science-fiction novels. Brought up in Ohio, Cleveland, he started writing when he was just in fifth grade and has continued ever since. This saw him go onto initially writing for games as he was originally a war game designer.

Much of his work is informed by his religious values, which he has stated as influencing the themes and arcs of his stories. Being a Methodist lay preacher, he looks at how religion can be used and misused as forces of both good and evil. This also informs much of his home-life too, as he lives with his wife Sharon and their children, along with his dogs too.

With a lifelong interest in history, especially military history, he has an enormous wealth of knowledge and affection for his favored subjects. Drawing from real-world events he takes his inspiration to craft his richly hued and deeply immersive universes. His past in games has also allowed him to construct far deeper worlds for the reader to become involved in. All this has helped build him up to be the popular writer who enjoys the success and critical acclaim that he does to this day.

Writing Career

Working on his début novel with the author Steve White, he first got published in 1989. This started a long and illustrious writing career under Baen Books. Originally though he began working on material by writing for gaming franchises, such as writing short-stories which were used by Task Force Games. This along with his early beginnings in copy-writing and advertising enabled him to gain a populist appeal that was to cement his critical and commercial success later on.

With over five series of novels to date, he has a vast collection of work behind him. One of the most notable of these is the ‘Honor Harrington’ series, which looks at the exploits of its key protagonist of the same name as he charts her career as a space officer within the Manticoran space navy. This series also branches of into a number of sub-series of its own, taking place in what has come to be known as the ‘Honorverse’, which features a wide and ever-expanding world for its readers to explore.

He’s also been known to create other worlds, such as that featured in his ‘Safehold’ series, which has continued up until recently with more books planned. Featuring a future world where humans are hiding from the alien ‘Gbaba’ race, it’s more dystopian in its outlook than that of his previous efforts. Getting much critical and commercial attention, David Weber shows no signs of stopping any-time soon. As his richly developed worlds continue to grow, so too does his audience and this will carry on as he gains national and international recognition.

On Basilisk Station

The first novel David Weber brought out in the Honor Harrington series, this book was initially published in 1993 and was to mark the start of a long-running franchise featuring the titular protagonist. Introducing the key players in his new universe, Weber brought in all the essential parts for his audience. Many of the extra supporting characters are also brought in here as well.

Assuming command of the HMS Fearless, Honor is given some authority with the promotion she’s been looking for only to suffer a setback after her ships new ‘grav lance’ proves to be incapable of completing the set tests. Despite Honor’s initial performance, which is more than stellar, she finds herself and her ship demoted to picket duty on the remote outpost of ‘Basilisk Station’. An outpost of the Star Kingdoms, she’s been placed out of the way to hide what’s felt to be a failure of her ship. That is until an old foe turns up in the form of the station fleet’s Commander Young who then attempts to give her a seemingly impossible task.

Honor manages her job with a great deal of efficiency though, as she then restores the reputation of the fleet there gaining the respect of the personnel on-board. That is when she comes into contact with a new drug being smuggled that holds dangerous properties with vast political and religious implications for the people it’s being sold to. She soon manages a raid on the drug ring though effectively taking it down. In order to make the most of their success, many of her fellow officers decide to embarrass Young and his influential family by distracting him from his duties.

With that Honor must now really proves herself and her efficiency as a leader in what might be her most grueling challenge yet. Will she be up to the task? Can she maintain the good reputation she’s built for her fleet? Just what will become of her on Basilisk Station?

Off Armageddon Reef

This is the first novel that David Weber brought out in the ‘Safehold’ line of books, an open-ended series of novels he first introduced in 2007. Concerning itself with the exploits with the war between humanity and the Gbaba, a genocidal race of aliens hellbent on destruction, it charts this conflict over the course of the books. In this particular book a colonization mission is sent out by humanity to hide away from the ever destructive race.

One particular mission is able to sneak away using trickery, as it manages to find a planet thousands of light-years away which becomes known as ‘Safehold’. Effectively a smaller version of earth, they then begin to have differences amongst the colonists about how best to proceed. One group wants to get by through the use of primitive technology undetected whilst being overseen by a religion of their own creation as they collectively wipe their memories, and the other group believes their technology should be preserved for future generations to discover and eliminate the Gbaba threat. A war soon breaks out between them with much of the technology destroyed in the process. Will they be able to reconcile their differences? Can they eliminate the alien threat? Just what secrets lie off Armageddon Reef?

   I read and re-read David’s books with the attitude of visiting old friends. The latest, Toll of Honor, is more of visiting old friends. David, More please.

   I’m 77 on my second bout of cancer I’ll be dead and gone long before the next book of the safehold or empire of man series are ever finished. I stopped reading Pournell when he didn’t finish the Janniseries I guess I’ll stop reading Weber until he finishes his series, but what can you expect out of a track toad.

   David Weber’s books are great – a rare talent.
   However, starting or continuing series then shutting it down as “last book in series” is very disheartening, especially to those of us who get invested in the story. If you do not end the series/story then you need to finish it; “Sword of the South”, “We Few”, “Path of the Fury” & “Governor” (although not sure how they are related yet). All of these are unfinished series that David just left hanging. I do not appreciate it at all. Get help and oversee some other good writers and continue the series please.

   I used to buy everything Mr. Weber wrote. But at some point he got wordier and wordier. When an entire chapter can be devoted to absolutely nothing that advances a story, I go elsewhere for reading entertainment. Were he to turn over a new leaf, I’d be back but I can’t stand his newer books. Way to many pages saying nothing at all.

   I cannot tell you how long or how much I have enjoyed the Honorverse books.
   I keep coming back to the Book Series in Order website whenever I need to update my lists. I was disappointed this last time because I was looking for the Chronological Order of Honorverse Books and was not able to find it. The Publication Order is of course very important but since I have so many of these books, I also like to read them in Chronological order as well as Publication order. Can the Chronological Order of Honorverse Books please be placed back on the listing?

   I have enjoyed most of these novels. I keep hoping for more in the Hell’s Gate series, as well as more Honor Harrington. The world building in each series astounds me. I also enjoy Bazel (?) and now his sister.

   Love Weber,but think he has a tendency to get a bit wordy. Describing in detail how a particular weapon is constructed is rather boring. It is more intertaining to read about when it is used and the battle scenes that happen after.

    I read “Fiery Trials” two years ago and at 76 I’m concerned that space travel isn’t going to happen in my lifetime. Powered air flight is by dirigible. Rocket powered flight isn’t even possible yet. Getting into space will require electronics and telecommunication. Much less creating a space navy capable of defeating the Gbaba.
    I just don’t see how Weber can pull off the necessary permutations without attracting their attention beforehand.
    Really want to read how he does it!

    Just finishing up the last David Weber Safehold book, Through Fiery Trials – have read them all now. A fabulous world Weber created, and while the parallels with Earth history abound, he has made the logic of them being ‘used’ seamless and logical in his story line. I have read science fiction/fantasy by choice since 1952 or so, (I read I Robot in hardcover WAAY before the movie, for instance), and David Weber really gives us a complete “other” world to explore. I have also read most of the Honor series. I highly recommend his work for really enjoyable reading.
