The books of this series describe the stories of Alexa and Suzanne Zimmerman, who belong to the Mennonite community of Kansas. The debut novel of the series is entitled ‘When Mercy Rains’. It was released by the WaterBrook publication in the year 2014. Author Sawyer has set this story in Kansas and Indiana. At the start of the book’s story, it is shown that Suzanne Zimmerman was just 17 years old when she became pregnant. Feeling ashamed of her act, her mother decided to send her to the community of Old Order Mennonite in Kansas. With the support of her family, her first love, and her old home behind her, Suzanne Zimmerman moves to Indiana and raises her daughter named Alexa. Suzanne also starts working as a nurse. After the passage of 20 years, Suzanne receives an unexpected letter that her brother had written to her. Suzanne learns her mother has fallen ill and her brother has asked her to come home and use her nursing abilities to care for her mother. With this request, Suzanne knows that she will have to face her family that has not yet forgiven her. Also, she will have to see her first love need Paul Aldrich. Paul is now widowed and has an 8 year old son. When Paul sees Suzanne again, she becomes relieved. He thinks that this is a chance for him to ask for Suzanne’s forgiveness for the indiscretion that he did in the past. However, when Paul Aldrich sees Alex, his guilt seems to flicker in the prolonged secret kept by Suzanne. This changes everything between them. Suzanne had given up all the expectation of forgiveness many years ago. The only thing that she cares about now is hope and the way her past is going to affect all those whom she loves very much.
The next book of the series is called ‘When Grace Sings’. This book was also released by WaterBrook publishers in 2015. Alexa opens a bread & breakfast joint and wants it to succeed. She agrees to let Briley Forrester remain with her as a long term boarder. Riley is a Chicago-based reporter. Alexa does not know that Riley is among the Plain folk, and so his real motives are something else. Later, Alexa Zimmerman agrees to host the ceremony of her cousin named Anna Grace Braun. She knows that her whole family will be present on the occasion and so she tends to feel insecure. Briley thinks of using this insecurity to uncover the hidden truths about Alexa’s family. When Anna Grace and Alexa realize that they are interconnected by their secrets, their young romance’s sweetness and the plans of a secure future tend to hand in balance. As a result, the two get bound in ways that neither of them had imagined. In the end, they understand that they must keep their trust in a heavenly, loving Father, and the plans that He has laid down foe their future.
